Bioware Blog post and main announcement:
LINK
Important excerpts:
For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games. Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form.
...
Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include single-player base content and DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus promo weapons, armors, and packs – all remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD. It will be available in Spring 2021 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, with forward compatibility and targeted enhancements on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
When will the Legendary Edition be released?
As of February, the release date has been announced as May 14, 2021.
What platforms will the Legendary Edition be available on?
Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows PCs, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5.
Is there a trailer for the Legendary Edition?
Yes, there is a teaser trailer HERE and a 4K reveal trailer HERE.
What aspects will be remastered/what will be changed or added?
This is what we know so far:
  • All three games and textures will be remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD.
  • Bug fixes
  • ME3's default appearance FemShep will now be available in ME1 and ME2 and has been slightly improved.
  • Improved and updated ME1 combat
  • More unified controls across all three games including with hacking/minigames
  • Universal character creator across all three games with new skin tones and hairstyles
  • ME3 will now include extended cut and galactic readiness will not require multiplayer.
  • Genesis and all DLC (except ME1's Pinnacle Station) now included. Multiplayer will also not be included.
  • Some animations and camera angles will be fixed. (MOD NOTE: This is like the Andromeda incest debacle all over again. Any and all posts about the changes to Miranda's cut scenes will be removed. There have been dozens of these and all of them violate at least Rule 3 and Rule 8. Multiple rule violations will result in a ban. They're not censoring Miranda's bum. They're literally just changing a few camera angles to be less awkward. Remember that scene with Femshep's dress?)

The Next Mass Effect

Has the next Mass Effect game been announced?
Yes, in the above N7 day blog post from Bioware, they announced that they are working on the next ME and released this teaser image:
Mud Skipper
Fans have speculated that the figures seen are a human, Angara, Drell, and Salarian, but none of these details have been officially confirmed. The image above has been titled "Mud Skipper."
Further, The Bioware Blog also made a post after the 2020 Game Awards trailer release HERE.
When will it be released and which platforms will it be on?
At this time we do not know what platforms the game will be on as we have no idea when it will be released. The Next Mass Effect is still a long way away and may even be released with a whole new generation of consoles.
Is there any other concept art?
Yes, some concept art for the next Mass Effect was released in the new art book Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development. See photos HERE and upscaled images from Casey Hudson himself HERE.
Is there a trailer?
Yes; watch it HERE.
During the Game Awards on December 10, 2020, a new teaser trailer was released featuring Liara at the end and some unknown figures standing with the "Mud Skipper" ship. Other familiar imagery include someone (presumably Liara) climbing a Reaper carcass, a destroyed Mass Relay, and a piece of an N7 Breather Helmet in Liara's hands.
Mike Gamble stated in a TWEET that he had been waiting "1,360" days for this, which is the exact number of days since Andromeda's release on March 21, 2017 up to the 2020 Game Awards. He also said "This trailer has much to unpack. Look. And listen closely :)" seemingly referring to the voices talking at the beginning of the trailer. Some of the voices and sounds include "first contact protocol," "Ark 6 is away," a reaper blast, and "we've lost contact." Ark 6 is the Quarian Ark from Andromeda.
Is The Next Mass Effect a sequel to the original trilogy or Andromeda?
We don't know yet. Any confirmed details will be in this post. I will use this question to post some Tweets from people involved with the project that seem to imply that it is both.
https://twitter.com/GambleMike/status/1337235463266942976:
Replying to @Joanna_Berry: Opening shot also has very pointed imagery of two galaxies... my mind is racing... are we going to get.. a single sequel to both games?!
Michael Gamble @GambleMike: intentional.
Michael Gamble @GambleMike: who knows. maybe not? but we show both for a reason :)

https://twitter.com/GambleMike/status/1337242303069474816:
Michael Gamble @GambleMike Replying to @Zoober: But who is in the background, nathan? You know. But the world doesnt. But can they figure it out? Who knows!
https://twitter.com/GambleMike/status/1337229313733640193:
Replying to @JustACyberLad: I heard "Godspeed" and all can I think of is that moment of taking off in the Tempest for the first time.
Michael Gamble @GambleMike: intentional.
Is there a title for the next game?
Not yet. At this time it is just being called The Next Mass Effect.
Who is composing the sound track and will any of the OT or Andromeda music be back?
We don't know yet, but Benjamin Wallfisch composed the music for the Game Awards teaser trailer.
Who is working on this game?
The N7 Day blog post stated that a "veteran team" is working on the game. Although Casey Hudson recently left Bioware, Mike Gamble Tweeted on 12/11/20 that the following veterans are working on the game. He also stated that "As time goes on, you'll get to know more of us."
  • Derek Watts, original art director for Mass Effect
  • Brenon Holmes, designer for three ME games (ME2, ME3, and MEA)
  • Parrish Ley, cinematic director for the Original Trilogy
  • Dusty Everman, worked on bringing the original Normandy to life

The Trash Taste Gacha Game Survey Results: Part I

The Trash Taste Gacha Game Survey Results: Part I
Hi all,
Two weeks ago, The Boys published their video on gacha games. This inspired me to conduct a survey on this subreddit on your thoughts and experiences with gacha games. Thanks to your support, there is a lot of data to sift through and a lot of interesting results so far. Due to IRL deadlines, I wasn't able to examine the data in full capacity, so I will be posting results in two or more sections.
This first section will primarily deal with the surface-level headline data. I will also cover some of the reasonings and inner workings of what went into the survey and results (for those interested in the data scientist portions of things). A subsequent post/posts in the near future will cover topics I wasn't able to get to as well as more technical analysis of the data (regression, model-building, etc.)
These posts will be presented in a semi-formal fashion, i.e., I'll lay out the posts like a research paper but I'll add personal interjections from time to time. (If you want to really get into the meat and potatoes, you can just skip to the "Results and Discussion" section.) With that said, allow me to introduce my initial findings:

Our Trash Taste in Gacha Games: An Informal Community Survey Analysis on the Nature of TrashTaste's Experience Regarding Gacha Games

Abstract
The recent rise of "gacha games" has been bolstered by a number of intersecting trends. These include the mass popularity of anime or anime-like products, the increasing ubiquity of smartphones, and introduction of lootboxing mechanics by game publishers as a means of profiting off "free to play" or "freemium" games in the digital sphere. A recent episode from the anime-centric podcast "Trash Taste" explored their experiences and opinions regarding such games. This post intends to further explore the general sentiment of gacha games through the podcast's official subreddit, TrashTaste, and discuss the results.
Motivation
A little bit about my background. Anime, anime-like products, and manga have been a huge part in my life. I remember watching Detective Conan, Pokemon, and Keroro Gunso and being introduced to Gundam and MapleStory when I was young. Since it seems to be a trend on this subreddit, I'll throw my hat in the ring and show my 3x3:
[If you want further discussion about these and other related series, feel free to comment below or DM me]
From left to right, up to down: Ah! My Goddess, Hayate the Combat Butler , The World God Only Knows, Carnival Phantasm (+ Fate franchise), Pastel, Q.E.D.: Shoumei Shuuryou, Yandere Kanojo, Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter, The Gamer
As I mentioned in my first post about the survey, I am a graduate student working on my masters for data science. I also completed a bachelors in economics. All of this combined made me not only interested in gacha games as an avid consumer, but also as a research subject. The Boys simply were the catalyst for spurring this project.
Data Collection and Survey Construction
Data was collected via Google Forms on the TrashTaste subreddit. The post that contained the survey was released several hours after the video was posted. Survey responses were collected for a period of 1 week from January 22 to January 28 (though there was a massive decrease in the rate of respondents after the fourth day).
The survey was constructed based on my own experiences with gacha games as well as general demographics that would be useful to examine on a macro scale.
Regarding demographics: asking respondents on several aspects of demographics is a tricky subject since not only does it mean divulging a group of variables known as protected classes, these could be markers that could reidentify anonymized people; thus, I stuck to "safer" questions (age and gender). I then asked which otaku material was preferred.
The next set of questions dealt with those who were currently playing gacha games. I asked the number of currently played games, which ones (with an open-ended aspect since I knew I would miss some) and the top 3 games.
For each of the top 3 games, I asked how long they have played, which server, how long the game was around, how consistent did they play, how far they were, their current level of commitment, how much they spent (open-ended), spending title, whether the game had PVP, hype moments (some open-ended), and why they play (some open-ended).
Finally, based on the central theme of The Boys' video, I asked whether games should be regulated and what their policy recommendation would be (open-ended).
Limitations and Oversights
This survey is, obviously, limited by the research environment and my experiences. Academic papers have pondered about the effectiveness regarding survey reliability using subreddits, which may be interesting and impactful from a statistically-minded formal research. In addition, there were a total of 678 respondents which, while certainly plenty in any regular volunteer statistical number crunching, pales in comparison to the 104K members in this subreddit alone; this is going to affect the power analysis of these results. Submitting the survey hours after the video was posted (when the user activity likely peaks) likely limited user exposure. Therefore, this post will be much closer to the next video.
Then there are questions I didn't ask due to oversight on my part - I'm only human.
  1. The biggest oversight, pointed out by u/Mareek, was
Welp I answered that I don't play any gatcha games, but it didn't give me a chance to say why I don't play them or if I played any before.
There should at least be a question for why/why not play them.
I probably would have asked something like:
If you responded "no," why do you not play gacha games?
- Not interested
- Not trying to get addicted
- Trying to stop gambling addiction
- Bad luck/greed sensor
- Used to play, but lost interest
2) As pointed out by u/Paoda and u/gzavwunt, I forgot to add visual novels into the "primary source of otaku source material" question! As a Fate fan, this was a massive oversight I regret (don't worry, I did at least watch the full visual novel playthroughs of Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia).
3) There were a few questions that were open-ended that in hindsight definitely backfired. The biggest ones were the "how long has the game lasted" ( u/ShinyMilo ) and "how much you spent" questions. They are a mess to deal with, even with all the regex expressions I know, so I ultimately had to throw them out. The former in the end was merely a curiosity and the latter was somewhat salvaged by the "spending title" questions, so I'm not too bothered by it, but something I'll keep in mind in the future.
Results and Discussion
Here are the initial results, and I think there's some interesting trends we can look at.
First, let's look at the demographics.
  1. Let's start with age distribution:

Figure 1
There were 678 respondents. There appears to be a considerable right skew (aka a skew towards a younger audience). There are a lot of zoomers among the respondents, though there are a considerable number of millennials as well.
2) Next, take a look at gender distribution:

Figure 2. Male: 87%, Female: 9.3%, Nonbinary: 1%, Prefer not to say: 2.7%
Well, somewhat not surprisingly, of the 678 respondents, an overwhelming 87% identified as males. Connor as "the 93%"? More like the survey as "the 9.3%."
3) For the final aspect of demographics, let's look at the distribution of answers for "What is your preferred consumption of otaku source material?"
Figure 3. (to the nearest tenth of a percent) Anime and Manga Equally: 33.8%, Anime: 32.4%, Manga: 16.7%, Anime, Manga, and Light Novel Equally: 9.7%, Manga and Light Novel Equally: 4.1%, Anime and Light Novel Equally: 2.2%, Light Novel: 1.0%
Of the 678, respondents, 32.4% prefer to watch anime, 16.7% prefer to read manga, and 33.8% prefer to consume anime and manga equally. Light novel readers (either as the preferred choice or read it equally with other mediums) amount to about 17%.
Hot take here: I am one of the 16.7% that prefer to read manga/manhwa (pitchforks in the comments), but only because there are so many series that I like that either have only become adapted recently (Horimiya, HameFura) or haven't been adapted yet (Shuumatsu no Valkyrie).
Next, let's look at gacha by the numbers.
  1. First, let's look at the number of gacha games people play:

Figure 4
Of the 678 respondents, 232 did not currently play and gacha games, 194 did currently play 1 game, 117 did currently play 2 games, and so forth. The most surprising finding was that there are a few people that currently play at least 10 games, with one even playing 17!
2) Next, let's look at the top 20 games that were the favorite, second favorite, third favorite, and overall most popular:
"...Yet in most companies, the so-called “80/20 rule” applies: 80 percent of a data scientist’s valuable time is spent simply finding, cleansing, and organizing data, leaving only 20 percent to actually perform analysis." - IBM

Figure 5
Holy cow, the quote above really hit for this particular question. There were about 75 replacements I had to do to make the game title uniform, with 15 related to Princess Connect alone!
As for the analysis: you read that correctly. There are a whopping 103 total gacha game titles that the 446 respondents play. Genshin Impact comes as the clear frontrunner for the most favorite game, second-most favorite game, third-most favorite game, and overall most popular game. However, the top 5 games in each category are the same: Genshin Impact, Fate/Grand Order, Arknights, Azur Lane, and Fire Emblem Heroes.
Garnt is certainly attracting his Fate peers here, including me.
As a side note, I have to give props to respondents who were honest about their stances. There were a few that put 'H***** Gacha Game,' 'Taimanin,' and 'AGA' (Anti-Gacha Army).
3) Next, let's look at the distribution of how each person categorizes themselves terms of spending:

Figure 6
This is a very interesting finding. For their most favorite game, about half of the respondents were free to play, a third were minnows, about a sixth were dolphins, and the small bit left were whales. As we move towards less favored games, the number of F2Pers increase and the number of whales decrease until there's none left for the third-most favorite game. It's an important lesson for natural resources and gacha game publishers alike: overfishing can lead to less species diversity.
As an aside, I am personally a dolphin for Fate GO. I have no qualms sharing that I spend some cash rolling for (ironically) Gilgamesh and NP5ing Sheba during Gilfest 2018 or even spending some New Year's allowance on Spishtar last month. fite me
4) Next, let's look at what aspects made the gacha game most "hype:"

Figure 7
The top answer was the introduction of new characters, anniversary events, and animation/art. It seems that many go for the "Anni is the Planni" strategy.
5) Next, let's look at the reasons why respondents play or continue to play their gacha game(s) [Note: I aggregated the numbers from favorite/second favorite/third favorite, so some users are double or triple counted, so numbers may look a little inflated. I will work on this for a future post]:

Figure 8. Top 15 answers.
The top answer for why respondents play or continue to play their gacha game was for "the waifus/husbandos" followed by "I enjoy this as a standalone game" and "I love the source material." The 114 of you who chose "Because jokes are the deepest lore," I see you Fate fans.
Probably the most interesting and concerning reasons that were not shown here are the sizable number of people who responded with either learned helplessness of their situation or frustration with the gacha-industry complex. These include "Sunk cost fallacy" (shown on the graph), frustration over rerolling, feeling like it's "a second job," stating that they're "addicted and can't quit," or flat out "dunno, it's kina there."
The Future of Gacha Games
Learning about these trends are good and all, but how do we consolidate these opinions into actionable thoughts? This is where the last half of The Boys' video about what to do comes in. Here's the community's reaction.
  1. First, it was asked "In your opinion, should gacha games be regulated?" 678 respondents responded:

Figure 9
83.8% of respondents said "Yes," 5% said "No,", and 11.2% said they need to do more research to come a conclusion.
2) Finally, I asked respondents an open-ended optional question that "If you could have a serious discussion about gacha games with a gacha game developer or lawmaker, what is the one policy recommendation you would suggest?"
Surprisingly, 473 people responded to the question. In the given timeframe, I could not read through all of the suggestions made; I will make sure to point out the most salient ones in the next post. In lieu of this, I decided to resort to a "quick and dirty trick" in natural language processing: n-grams! Simply put, I first removed common stopwords such as "you," "have", etc., and tokenized each response (i.e. separated each response into a list of word "units"). I then counted the frequency that each set of consecutive words appeared in each response. I counted frequency of the top 20 unigrams (one word), bigrams (2 words) and trigrams (3 words). Here is the result:

Table 1
This is incredible stuff. The top two unigrams are "limit" and "spending," and other frequent unigrams include "gambling," "amount," and "time." Bigrams tell a broader story, with the top bigram being "(spending, limit)." There are other bigrams that expand upon policy recommendations such as "(hard, limit)", "(gambling, addiction)", "(drop, rates)," and "(pity, system)." Finally, looking at trigrams, we get an even fuller picture: the top trigram is "(limit, much, spend)." Other prominent trigrams include "(hard, limit, spending)," "(thing, connor, said)," and "(treat, like, gambling)."
While the suggestions of limiting spending are quite frequent (following the footsteps of Connor), this is a fairly well-researched topic in the realm of behavioral economics. In particular, it looks at the encompassing topic of intertemporal choice. This is a pretty complex and field-specific topic that is too long to discuss in entirety in this post, but I'll boil down the critical points relevant to gacha games. [WARNING: some math ahead]
First, say that you have a set budget that you're going to spend over several periods of time. When we spend money in a time period, get gain joyfulness (called "utility" or simply "U") at that time period.
Second, we typically discount the amount of utility we get in the future. We usually assign this as a set rate called the discount factor ( δ ) . Thus, we get the following equation:
(U_t) * (δt-1) = U_1 + δU_2 + δ2U_3 + ... + δT-1 \) U_T
This simply means the total utility we get over a time period is the sum of all utilities of all periods based on today. All the above is considered in "classical economics" as exponential discounting. This assumes that
  • people have a constant discount factor and are impatient (δ < 1),
  • that people treat amounts as "bursts" of consumption," and
  • that utility is linear in amount.
However, economists that study behavioral economics show that some of these assumptions are flawed through though experiments and empirical results.
One way this has manifested into policy action is the concept of "nudge theory" by Richard Thaler. This suggests that consumer behavior can be influenced by small suggestions and positive reinforcements; the argument is that it reduces market failure and encourages desirable actions. However, this is hotly debated ethically as being paternalistic and may not even work.
Another theory brought about via behavioral economics is the idea of "present-bias preferences" by Ted O'Donoghue and Matthew Rabin. The idea is that when people consider tradeoffs between two future moments, present bias gives more weight to the earlier future moment. In this scenario, we have two types of people: naifs and sophisticates. Sophisticates know that they'll have self-control problems in the future, so they plan ahead while naifs do not see the self-control problems. Depending on if there is a cost or a reward, these two types of people will "cave in" at different times.
In general, the utility function (called β-δ preferences) is as follows:
For all t, Ut (u_t, u_(t+1),...,u_T) = δt u_t + β δτ + u_τ |t+1 < τ < T
where 0 < β, δ <= 1
β is the present bias, and β=1 makes equation exponential discounting.
How do these relate to gacha games? Well, the former (nudging) is like the third party (iTunes store, Google Play) directly intervening on your behalf saying that you can only spend so-and-so this month. The latter (present bias) puts the self-imposed limit in your own hands, which a third party adds as a restriction.
Consider these aspects in future discussions regarding regulations surrounding gacha games.
[it's been a year since I've been fully immersed in this stuff, so econ folks please check if the explanations are suitable]
Ending Remarks
I hope these initial results illustrated some fascinating aspects of how our subreddit has viewed gacha games. I know that there are a few questions that I haven't covered here due to lack of time, so look forward the next part of the survey results!
Let me know if there are specific statistical analyses you would like for me to examine in the comments.
If you want to put friend requests for the gacha games I'm playing [Fate GO (JP), OPTC (JP) Dokkan (GBL)], DM me.
In addition, I'm thinking about releasing a clean and anonymized version of the data in csv form not only as a measure of transparency, but also if you want to do your own data manipulation. If you (the community) approve at over 75%, then I will publish it in the next post.

Best and worst games I played in 2020

Here are my recommendations of games that I played for the first time in 2020. S-tier games that have become my all-time favourites made this list. 2020 was the year where I finally realised which games I actively want to play and it’s made my gaming experiences so much more entertaining.
Here are also some games to completely avoid with exaggerated opinions. These are some of the worst games I’ve ever played, ranging anywhere from confusingly irredeemable to malignant, insulting games that are only holding back video games as an entertainment and art form, and hate you for playing them.
I’ve listed some better games at the end of each review as much better alternatives with similar gameplay or style. Please vehemently disagree with me in the comments
Best: Resident Evil 2 Resident Evil 2 has everything I want from an action game. The core gameplay of running around a police department, escaping fights with monsters and zombies while working out puzzles is Resident Evil’s thing, and Resident Evil 2 adds solid gunplay, meaningful weapon upgrades and rewarding items for putting in extra effort. I only missed one which required some backtracking near the end of the game, and realised that about 5 minutes after a point of no return. The Tyrant chasing you around adds a lot of flavour to the game, forcing you to adapt strategies and plans. Resident Evil 2 also has my personal distinction of being the only game I’ve ever finished twice back to back, finishing Leon and then Claire’s story in a week.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Take everything I said about Resident Evil 2, plus frightening horror that actually got to me at points, a better story, and a first person perspective that works incredibly well, and that’s what I have to say about Resident Evil 7. Absolutely the best in the series as it amplifies what makes the Resident Evil games so great while adding equally interesting new ideas. The Baker family’s grotesque transformations and gory boss fights are highlights, chainsawing an old man’s face and shotgunning a crazy old woman is the most fun I’ve had this year.
Bloodborne It’s between Bloodborne or Bioshock as my favourite game of all time. I fear that I could spend hours typing what fascinated me about this game, so I’ll save my collected thoughts for another post. Bloodborne’s world is captivating from beginning to end. It unravels as you gather insight on the desecrated city of Yharnam, learning about the Healing Church forsaking the city with its endless hunts. My character, a woman who has left her land after her family were slaughtered by the same beasthood that ravaged Yharnam, fit perfectly with the story, and even thematically mirrored a DLC character’s past. By the way, The Old Hunters DLC is the best DLC ever, no doubt. If you’re going to buy Bloodborne go with Game of the Year edition, it’s spectacular. Of course you don’t need the DLC to fully enjoy the game, but it adds an impressive amount of gameplay hours, new story that adds to the main story, the excellent Research Hall level, the most dramatic boss fight and a pizza cutter weapon. Bloodborne’s gameplay is equally as fascinating as the story, with a fast-paced almost fighting game style combat system, a nearly completely connected immersive world, expert level design, some of the best bosses in any video game, and terrifying difficulty. For many players, these may seem too much or ‘not for me’, (always disappointing to see people give up on the Souls games, but understandable given the lack of beginner friendliness), and I certainly felt the same way at first. When I learnt to persevere and actively focus on the game, quitting out whenever a mild inconvenience in real life happened, it became a joy to play. I had mastered and overcome a godly challenge. I’m pretty terrible at games generally, so I honestly feel proud that I managed to beat this game and the DLC. Bloodborne’s cathartic moments, its incredible story and the pure art of the game which can be captured in a screenshot, or the masterful soundtrack, are all why it’s likely my favourite game ever.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Overlooked is an understatement. Made by the director of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, this game is metroidvania almost perfected. Almost, as there’s some inconsistent game design towards the end with a specific puzzle, but that’s my only real criticism. It’s also a well deserved ‘fuck you’ to Konami, with a pachinko boss fight and David Hayter practically voicing Snake. Gameplay is excellent with intuitive dungeons, bonus areas, RPG-style weapon, skills and armour customisation, and some crushingly difficult bosses. If you want a rest from the main game, you can always return to the beginning town and complete quests - my favourite is making meals for a constantly hungry old woman, as you can later buy and use them for permanent stat boosts. Shamefully, I really liked dressing up Miriam, the main character anime girl. Messing around with her skin colour and unlocking hairstyles is worth the £20 alone. With free upcoming DLC, it’s a perfect patient gamer game.
Spec Ops: The Line Spec Ops: The Line is a perfect game. Many criticise the cover shooting, but it twists the generic mechanics into something amazing. In games such as Gears of War or Uncharted, taking cover is used to stop enemies shooting at you, reload, regen health, have a cup of tea or anything you can do while crouching. Spec Ops, however, puts you against relentless enemies who will suppress your fire when in cover and move to flank you, meaning you are forced to move and take damage, or work out a strategy with your teammates on the fly. It’s not deep strategy, but it really adds a new dimension to the game which sets it apart. The level design is excellent too, with plenty of memorable combat arenas like a decaying stadium, a destroyed luxury hotel, and an abandoned mall, which all go hand in hand with the story, which needs no introduction. Dubai has been wiped out by a sandstorm, and a rogue US army battalion led by your former leader and some civilians remain. Each level adds another piece to the PTSD puzzle, as you mow down hundreds of American soldiers who scream out in fear and panic as the game slow-motions their heads being destroyed by one of your bullets, while death rattles of wounded soldiers permeate the arena. Walker, voiced expertly by Nolan North, slowly changes over the course of the game as his honest, heroic decisions turn out to be, well, not very heroic. One of my favourite details in a video game is how his reload and command voice lines change the further you go into the game, as the weight of his task to rescue civilians and extract his mentor becomes unbearable. Even the main menu changes throughout the game, representing the entropy of the city. I haven’t tried the multiplayer as there’s no one online, but the fact it’s there makes me appreciate this game even more. Spec Ops: The Line is video games as a narrative experience exemplified perfectly.
Rayman Legends Incredible 2D platformer that removes many conventions (lives, starting a level over, time) and is better for it. Each level has depth with collectables that unlock new characters and levels, and side challenges. The highlight is the music stages, which remix songs to fit the world’s theme, and the platforming is based on rhythm. Disappointing to hear of Michel Ancel’s departure from Ubisoft, as that means we’ll likely never get a sequel. I sympathise with you, Beyond Good and Evil fans. Now if only Ubisoft executives could stop trying to mount every female in the workplace and work on another of these games (Seriously though, fuck Ubisoft for the sexual assaults and their PR coverups).
Mario Kart Wii I never owned a Wii as a child. It pained me to see all my friends play Wii Sports Resort and Super Mario, but one game in particular eluded me: Mario Kart Wii. The speed, the soundtrack, the plastic wheel you put over the Wiimote - I remember being captivated by it and wishing I could have a gaming experience like that in my own home. 12 years later, the Wii and Wii U have as much grasp on popular culture relevancy as Game of Thrones, which is the perfect time to buy an old console and a copy of this game. Mario Kart Wii is exactly as I remember. Coconut Mall, DK’s Snowboard Cross, battle mode, plus all the tracks my friends never unlocked make this one of my personal favourites. I debated putting it on this list as I’d find it hard to compare to a game like Bloodborne or Bioshock, but any game that creates the same childhood wonder in me is instantly going in my favourites list. Mario Kart Wii is fun racing with enough depth to get good at, and even more exciting playing it with friends. Especially when you’ve got a spiny shell.
Worst: Rise of the Tomb Raider Basically ‘ok’ can only last so long before becoming tedious. Rise of the Tomb Raider does nothing notable with its gameplay. Most egregious is the plot that’s basically stolen beat for beat from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Mountains, evil super-Russians, and annoying bullet sponge mythical enemies at the end (although they’re better than the bootleg Thanos’ you fight in U2, but basically anything is). Lara Croft is insufferable, she has no personality and grunts and shoots her way through every situation. Definitely the best of the worst list as I finished only this and Detroit but I really shouldn’t have wasted my time. Instead play Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Saints Row Mid-2000s 50 Cent and Soulja Boy era hip hop aesthetics were always cringe. Saints Row goes for that materialistic objectify all women attitude without much irony and actually takes itself seriously. The beginning is every angry teenage white boy’s dream of various women trying to sleep with you, surviving a gang attack and then being recruited to this gang because they noticed you’re such a chad. I’m surprised he didn’t also win a rap battle against Eminem. It’s trying to be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with its satire and comedy, but it ends up being cringy rather than funny when you’re listening to the stereotypical camp gay guy shouting down the radio without any smart jokes or wordplay. The game also runs terribly, even on my original Xbox One. I’m really hoping the other games in this series are as good as everyone says, and this is only a false start. Instead play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare I imagine the pitch for this game was ‘Consumers didn’t like consuming the new Halo’s that they’ve consumed. Anyway, fellow executive, how will we make consumers consume another Call of Duty?’ ‘Let’s make the consumers consume Call of Duty while ripping off Halo down to the weapon and ship designs and promise a sci-fi experience with 2016 relevant celebrities and the usual passionless gameplay, and completely break the multiplayer with pay-to-win weapons. That way we can consume all of the disappointed Halo consumers’ money plus the yearly sycophants’ who’ll buy our games every year anyway. Wanna test our brand loyalty by releasing the worst trailer ever?’ Instead play Halo 4
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 malignant and represents the worst of ‘live service’ microtransaction lootbox fuelled games. Literally a pay to win £50 (70 USD) game with overpowered weapons only in lootboxes that Activision promised not to include, no campaign and another cringy comedy zombies mode. Fuck this game and fuck Activision. I hope the executives’ spoilt and probably racist children are happy with the money they’ve got from gambling addicts. Instead play Doom Eternal
Detroit: Become Human malignant and represents the worst of emotional story-driven artistic pretentious wank games. Horrible storytelling about racism and abuse, no interesting or likeable characters, nonsensical plot twists and unbelievably miserable forced drama. Obvious and rudimentary observations about complex and incredibly serious social issues are constant. It feels exploitative and contrived to see humans try to rape and murder the harmless androids when in the game’s own context it makes no sense. I’m really sick of seeing this stuff in games and films, the obvious contrivances like stabbing a pregnant woman in the Last of Us by accident, ‘Now you must hate her, audience!’ Terrible writing. If you don’t make the choices the game wants you to make you’re railroaded until you play the game ‘properly’, so your choices mean nothing. I chose not to rescue a character who explicitly hated me because I was an android, which locked me out of a good (relative) ending, because your choices affect a good ending/bad ending binary system. Not playing the game the way David Cage wants you to? Bad ending, though the ‘good’ endings are equally poorly written. While I did actually finish the game, it is absolutely NOT representative of how much I enjoyed it compared to the others on this list. I only stuck around to the ending because my friends constantly recommended it, and because of the praise from reviewers desperate to give any high profile game a positive review if it increases their chances of working for a game company. See this year’s Game Awards as perfect example. David Cage has no ideas that aren’t already from much better movies, the talentless misogynist. I’m pretty sure he ripped the narrative straight out of Humans, a 2015-2018 UK TV show from the few scenes I’ve seen from it. At least Kojima makes good games when he steals from movies, and dubiously sexualises women. Instead play Batman and Batman: The Enemy Within (and watch Seven, Memento, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049)
Aliens: Colonial Marines it’s awful, but I’ll still take this over Black Ops 4 or The Division. Every level has basic and boring corridors with broken AI targets to shoot. I gave up after a broken stealth section. Pretty funny to watch, though. Instead play Doom
Knack memes aside, Knack sucks. Broken combat where every enemy is so vastly more powerful than you, no real combos in a beat ‘em up, strange Lego knockoff character designs. I can’t wait to play Knack 2 after I’ve finished literally every other game in existence Instead play Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Dragon Ball Final Bout No idea why I played this, I don’t even like Dragon Ball. Anyway, it’s unplayable due to the abysmal controls Instead play Tekken 3
Wii Music Nintendo are pretty cool, but not free from making terrible games. Wii Music has no real gameplay. As soon as you put in the disc, you’ve won the game. Waving the Wiimote around without any rhythm or skill gets you through every song in the limited track list, which lacks any Killing in the Names or Through the Fire and the Flames(s). No fun at all, and especially disappointing from Nintendo. Instead play Tetris Effect: Connected
Tunnel B1 obscure mid-90s game. The colour brown. Best left forgotten. Instead play Star Wars Battlefront II
Tom Clancy’s The Division The Division proves that the gaming industry is often going backwards. It has less gameplay than Gears of War, another third-person cover shooter from 2006, released ten years before the Division. Even basic enemies are bullet sponges, meaning every encounter is hiding behind a chest high wall and waiting to unload 30 more rounds into them. The story is completely tone deaf and idiotic with a huge disconnect from the gameplay. If you’re a highly skilled operative why is one random thug so much more powerful than you? One of the most infuriating, lazy ways of designing combat, the anti-power trip. Life-wasting Ubisoft hollowness. At least I didn’t waste a weekend, as you can see all the game has to offer in about 4 hours. Instead play Spec Ops: The Line

Smile PreCure! Filler Guide

Smile PreCure! Filler Guide
Smile is effectively the anti-GoPri: where GoPri is tightly plotted with no filler despite being 50 episodes long, Smile is a show composed pretty much entirely of filler. If you attempt to take it out, you're left with little over a single cour.
1-6, 12, 21, 22, 23, 31, 32, 45-48
As Smile is such a slice-of-life show, it lives and dies on its comedy. If the comedy does not land, you will not enjoy it. However because it's so episodic, how well the comedy lands can and will vary from episode to episode. As such, this post is here to guide your viewing.
If you only watch non-filler episodes you miss out on this wonderful gay

Team Assembly Arc (eps. 1-7)

This arc basically sets up the premise, team, and locations so that the following one-shots can work. It entirely consists of essential viewing.
1. 「She's Born! The Perfect Smile, Cure Happy!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Miyuki becomes a Cure. Comedy is extremely on point here. Definitely watch it.
2. 「On Fire! The Hot-Blooded Cure Sunny is Here!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Akane becomes a Cure. Not a funny episode but very wholesome. Worth it.
3. 「Rock-Paper-Scissors♪ Cure Peace!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Yayoi becomes a Cure. Not a funny episode but Yayoi is babey and Miyuki is wholesome so their combination is extremely enjoyable. Definitely watch it.
4. 「A Straight Up Bout! Cure March of the Wind!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Nao becomes a Cure. Once again, not a funny episode but very wholesome.
5. 「A Beautiful Heart! Cure Beauty!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Reika becomes a Cure. Honestly this one can be kind of boring due to its cumbersome fight scene, in which each Cure in turn wastes their one-use-only special attack on a projected copy of the monster. That said, it's also notable for containing a shot of Yayoi "peeking into the frame" as if she was in a Cube Watermelon comic. So it's worth it.
:Yayoi_peek:
6. 「The Team is Complete! Smile PreCure!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Very good comedy in this one. Also worldbuilding re: Candy's world, and an explanation of the overarching goal of the season.
7. 「Where Could It Be? Our Secret Base!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
The Cures decide they need a base and shenanigans happen! Really good comedy here. Definitely watch it.

Filler Batch I, Part I (eps. 8-11)

Why is this short, you ask? Because in episode 12 they use a certain group attack for the first time and it's not really that much of a plot episode but doesn't really count as filler for that reason >.<
8. 「Miyuki and Candy Switch Places~!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
It is as the title says. Miyuki and Candy bodyswap. It's a hilarious episode. Go watch it.
9. 「No Way~! Yayoi's Being Transferred!?」 WATCH IF YOU'RE A YAYOI FAN
. . . because if you're not you will die of secondhand embarrassment a thousand times over before the episode is done. Yayoi, who has never heard of April Fools Day before, lies to Miyuki that she's being transferred out as a joke, which immediately snowballs and it becomes impossible for Yayoi to get a word in edgewise.
10. 「Hot-Blooded! Akane's Okonomiyaki Life!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE AN AKANE FAN
Akane needs to cover for her father catering for an important social event, and attempts to copy his okonomiyaki but her unique style keeps leaking through. She proceeds to run crunch time in an attempt to copy his style (which she is never able to do) and the story endorses that decision. The episode has good Akane moments so if you're an Akane fan you'll enjoy it, but otherwise it's a li'l uncomfortable. Just a li'l.
11. 「The PreCures Have Shrunk~!?」 WATCH IF YOU'RE NOT A NAO FAN (CW: BUGS)
It is as the title says. Shenanigans cause the cures to become smol (pillbug-sized). This inconveniently means that Nao (who is shown herein to have a phobia of bugs) is immobilized for a good portion of the episode. The other cures attempt to get her to "get over" her phobia via improvised exposure therapy, which of course doesn't work. This is treated as a gag. *sigh*

The One With The Group Attack (ep. 12)

12. 「The Awakened Power! Rainbow Healing!!」 OPTIONAL BUT KIND OF PLOT EPISODE??? SORT OF???
The cures prepare for a school trip to Kansai and Candy feels inferior. The cures get a group attack, and the villains get an upgraded Akanbe type. Honestly this episode didn't grab me all that well and I'm not sure what would cause it to grab someone, so it's marked optional.

Filler Batch I, Part II (eps. 13-20)

13. 「School Trip! Miyuki, Happy in the Depths of Kyoto!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
This is the one with all the cursed faces you've probably seen. Miyuki pulls a fortune for VERY BAD LUCK and shenanigans happen. Extremely amusing shenanigans. Notable for being the only time we see present-day Miyuki without the cornet hair.
14. 「School Trip! Getting Lost in Osaka!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
The team accidentally gets split in half and attempts to chase each other down. Shenanigans happen. Also this is the debut of the nattou gyouza candy running gag (nattou is a fermented soybean dish).
15. 「Slapstick! Miyuki's Big Mother's Day Plan!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE A MIYUKI FAN
Miyuki becomes extremely anxious for something as small as almost forgetting Mother's Day. This is of course because Miyuki is a fluffy ball of wholesomeness, however if you're not much of a Miyuki fan you probably shouldn't watch it.
16. 「Reika's Worries! Why Do I Study!?」 WATCH IF YOU'RE A REIKA FAN
An introspective Reika episode in which she quits literally all her extracurriculars over an identity crisis she's having. If you're not a Reika fan you'll probably be pissed off at it. If you are a Reika fan then you're guaranteed to like it.
17. 「Hot-Blooded! Akane's Comedy Life!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
The episode does revolve around Osaka stand-up comedy traditions and features cameos by real-life comedians Fujiwara), so please read both Wikipedia articles first if you're not already familiar. It's a good episode.
18. 「Nao's Feelings! The Baton That Connects Everyone's Bonds!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE A NAO OR YAYOI FAN
Nao enrolls the cures in a baton race. There are good Nao moments and good Yayoi moments here but if you're not particularly a Nao fan or a Yayoi fan you won't enjoy the episode that much.
19. 「Thank You, Papa! Yayoi's Treasure」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Yayoi is given a class assignment to find out why she was named that. This episode will pull All The Heartstrings even if you're not normally a Yayoi fan. Highly recommended.
20. 「Invisible People? Miyuki and Akane Become Invisible~!?」 OPTIONAL
Not a particularly great episode even for Miyuki fans tbh. It is mainly notable for this immortal frame:
nom nom nom

Mid-season Hype Machine (eps. 21-23)

Joker does things!! Best boi!! I stan!! Anyway, the show gets serious for these episodes before returning to its usual state afterwards.
21. 「Wish to the Stars! Everyone Together For~ever!!」 PLOT EPISODE
A little like Lyrical Nanoha's infamous "Christmas Eve." It's a relatively fluffy and Nothing episode, until hell breaks loose at the end.
22. 「What's The Most Important Thing?」 PLOT EPISODE
Joker shows off how awesome and terrifying he is, and the cures plan a direct assault on the villains' base.
23. 「Pierrot's Revival! The PreCure are in Danger!!」 PLOT EPISODE
The series could end here and it would be a satisfying finale.

Filler Batch II (eps. 24-30)

24. 「The PreCures Have Become Fairies, miyu~!?」 OPTIONAL, BUT DON'T WATCH IF YOU CAN'T STAND FAIRY TYPING QUIRKS
It is as the title says. The cures briefly become fairies. As a result they adopt typing quirks (--miyu for Miyuki, --ya nen for Akane, --yayo for Yayoi, --nao for Nao, and --desu for Reika). As a result, if fairy quirks get on your nerves, do not watch. Pretty unremarkable otherwise, and slightly infamously resets the clock and forces the cures to perform another round of Decor collecting (which happens one more time).
25. 「The Summer! The Sea! Akane and Nao's Stubborn Showdown!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Akane is running the family's okonomiyaki stand. Nao is selling shaved ice. As they are both hot-blooded sports people they immediately start up a rivalry over this. It's rather fun to watch.
26. 「Summer Festival! A Massive Flower Blooms in the Night Sky!」 OPTIONAL
Ehhhh... there's a natsumatsuri I guess? And Majorina is trying to participate but has bad luck? It's a boring episode.
27. 「A Summer Mystery!? Grandma's Treasure」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Contains the single greatest gag in the show. Mandatory viewing.
28. 「Lies? Truths? We Aren't Afraid of Ghosts!」 OPTIONAL
Do you really hate test of courage plotlines? Did you watch Daybreak Illusion's seventh episode and think "I categorically refuse to watch something this cringe ever again"? If so then this episode is NOT for you. What happens is that Akane finds out Miyuki and Nao are scared of ghosts and thus decides to run them through a test of courage in order to spite Reika, which is conveniently timed with Majorina doing a thing. You must decide if you want to watch it yourself.
29. 「The PreCures are Sucked Into a Game~!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
This is a Gambling Episode, much like Doki Doki's. For those unfamiliar, it's basically a miniature sports anime where both sides are magically cheating at the sport and your goal is to outmaneuver your opponent. It's fun.
30. 「An Around-the-World Trip Through the Book Door!!」 OPTIONAL
Honestly if you're watching it you're watching it for the unique fight scene in which the cures turn into mermaids.

The Reality Marble Arc (eps. 31-32)

Joker does another thing! This time he comes equipped with his own pocket dimension.
31. 「The Royal Clock and Candy's Secret!!」 PLOT EPISODE
The cures ponder over their new merch, get curbstompted by a new kind of Akanbe that fuses with its general, and what's this? pocket dimension?
32. 「All Hearts As One! The PreCures' New Power!!」 PLOT EPISODE
The cures break out of the pocket dimension, get an upgrade to their group attack, and are forced to restart Decor collecting again.

Filler Batch III (eps. 33-39)

33. 「History Drama in a Movie Studio!?'s Tactics!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
The cures film a period drama. Pop makes a Lupin reference.
By the way go watch heyitscorinth's video on the Lupin franchise (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2-qnbDDpDs) it's good-
34. 「United as One! Miracle Fashion Show at the Culture Festival!!」 ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WATCH
The cures pressure their classmate into participating in a school event against his will. The story is specifically contrived so that the cures can be in the right about that. It's baaaaaaaaaaad.
35. 「Yayoi, Protect the Earth! A PreCure Became a Robot!?」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Miyuki becomes a super robo; Reika shows off her piloting skills; and Yayoi is babey.
36. 「Hot-Blooded!? Akane's First Love Life!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE AN AKANE FAN
Somehow, this rando from the UK wound up studying abroad at the cures' school despite having . . . well, "limited Japanese skills" is very generous. Akane basically has to teach him the whole language by herself.
37. 「Reika's Worries! A Noble Heart and a Noble Vote!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
The three generals run for student council president. It's a fun time.
38. 「Hustling Nao! The PreCures Become Kids~!?」 ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WATCH
There's something supremely cursed about people being turned into children and exhibiting childlike behavior as a result. This is an episode of great curse. Stay far away.
39. 「What's Going On!? Miyuki's Nonsensical Cinderella」 DEFINITELY WATCH
In a rare instance of the show putting its metafictional premise to use, the cures are tasked with ensuring the "root" of the Cinderella folktale (i.e. the book in Märchenland from which all versions of the story are born) stays on track. Episode ends on the implication that all versions of Cinderella are now lesbians. It's a very fun time.

NP5 Arc (eps. 40-44)

This is a sequence of five character episodes, each of which is marked by the character it's about maxing out their solo finisher. All are worth watching (though some more than others depending which characters you like).
40. 「Hot-Blooded! Akane's Treasure Hunting Life!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE AN AKANE FAN
Wholesomeness starring Akane. If you're not a fan you'll probably be bored.
41. 「I'm a Manga Artist!? Yayoi has Illustrated Future Dreams!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Yayoi gets additional characterization and it's a good episode in general. Notably her upgraded NP looks an awful lot like a solo version of Marble Screw!
42. 「Protect it! Nao and her Family's Precious Bonds!!」 WATCH IF YOU'RE A NAO FAN
The infamous episode in which the show attempts to bait you into thinking Nao's family were killed. If you don't like Nao you probably won't like this episode. It very much feels like preceding Nao episodes, just with higher stakes, so if you liked earlier Nao episodes you may want to give it a chance even if you don't like Nao.
43. 「Reika's Path! I will Study Overseas!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
This episode is so unique and stylish, when I watched it I almost felt like I was in an episode of Utena. PreCure usually doesn't go for that. Watch it.
Mokushi kushimo shimoku kumoshi moshiku shikumo~
44. 「Secrets of a Smile! Miyuki and the Real Ultra Happy!!」 DEFINITELY WATCH
Miyuki gets a little extra depth. If you're not already invested in her character, you might not enjoy it as much; HOWEVER, the depth this episode brings has a fair chance of being relatable even to people who otherwise dislike Miyuki.

The Finale (eps. 45-48)

All plot, all good.
45. 「The Beginning of the End! The PreCures vs. the Three Subordinates!!」 PLOT EPISODE
The final battle begins with the cures facing off against the three generals. Then Joker shows up to lead into...
46. 「The Worst Possible Ending!? Bad End PreCure !!」 PLOT EPISODE
The summoning of the Bad End PreCure. Reika does a thing here that makes me pretty confident the writers are Fate fans (she fights like EMIYA but the swords are made of ice!) and it's very cool. Actually all the fights in this one are great.
47. 「Pierrot's Strongest Advent! Unrelinquishing Power and the Light of Hope!!」 PLOT EPISODE
Finally the fight against Pierrot himself begins! This stretches across the last two episodes.
48. 「The Lights Shining to the Future! Deliver it! The Greatest Smile!!」 PLOT EPISODE
The fight concludes. Bet you weren't expecting the planet to be literally torn asunder briefly were you?
Overall, there's a lot of stuff to like in this show and also a lot of stuff to Not Like depending on your tastes. Have fun!

Sometimes I think about how nice it would be to have hobbies, but then my brain's like "LOL nah."

Quarantine has been hard for multiple reasons, but my inability to stick to new hobbies or creative outlets has made it even more challenging.
A friend was teaching me how to knit before everything happened, and despite starting to drift into hyperfixation territory in terms of trying to learn how to do it myself when we couldn't meet up anymore, it eventually just ground to a halt. I tried roller skating for a bit, but by the time the cheapo skates I bought finally showed up at my house and I could get in some practice runs, I was already starting to lose interest. I tried getting some baby succulents to raise, but ended up killing them. I got back into watching anime, obsessively watched like 5 series and burned out. I tried doing some redecorating for my space, did one tiny corner, got overwhelmed and stopped. Cooking? Bought a ton of discount spices to try and make nice meals, and bailed. Comics and books? My To-Read pile from before lockdown is still sitting in a longbox on my floor. Exercising? Haven't been able to find the "perfect" workout regime to keep myself focused, so my sports bras are gathering dust. And now it's 1am and I've got a Hello Kitty Gundam model kit in my cart, trying to decide if I have the attention span to actually build it.
I know that trying to have hobbies with ADHD isn't impossible, but it definitely feels that way sometimes, and I'm sick of it. I just want to be able to make things or do stuff with my time without my brain constantly shitting the bed. I'm tired of wasting money on potential interests because I can't predict when my brain is going to start rejecting the idea of actually doing them. It's like having a gambling problem, but I lose money AND serotonin.
I'm tired of feeling like the only thing I can do to entertain myself is just endlessly scrolling social media on my phone watching other people have hobbies because it's the safest/least expensive option. There's gotta be a better option than this.

Video Game Review: 1-800-SUPER

1-800-SUPER takes place in the moderately nearish future of 2056. You have recently been hired by a hotline for superheroes and supervillains. You got hired thanks to your stunning, though typo filled, application...and because nobody else applied. The hotline has been redirected to your cellphone. You will help guide the heroes and villains. However, you must also mind the balance between good and evil. Maxing out the meter on either end will result in bad things. If there is too much good, then the city will be turn into a surveillance police state where the superheroes rule as autocratic dictators. If, on the other hand, there is too much evil, then the city will descend into anarchy, and the villains will have free reign. Each choice you make will impact the balance, so choose wisely.
I was approached to review 1-800-SUPER by Markus Witzlhofer. He contacted me on behalf of Pangolin Park; a small indie company based in Berlin. They had come out with an interactive audio drama game, and were wondering if I'd be up for reviewing it. He also mentioned that the team were all fans of my blog. As I've mentioned before, I'm a big fan of interactive media, especially Choose Your Own Adventure-type games. Adding an audio component seemed like the next logical step for interactive media. I happily said yes, and Markus sent me a free download code. The game is $2.99 for the rest of you, but honestly, I'd say that's a fair price for the quality and replay potential of this game.
I've already talked about the general mechanics of the gameplay, but let's talk specifics. This is a mobile game available from the App Store. The home screen of the game looks like the interface of an iPhone. You have an email app where the heroes and villains will send you emails about how your advice turned out. You'll also get news emails if the heroes or villains caused collateral damage as a result of your advice. I should mention that the amount of collateral damage you cause doesn't affect anything, other than pushing your meter more towards the evil side. You'll also get emails from Mr. Souls, your hotline mentor. He'll give you tips and tricks to help you out.
There's a notes app that gives basic information on each of the heroes and villains you encounter; their names, strengths, weakness, archenemies, and their mental diagnosis. Be sure you read all of this and keep it in mind; it will be important later in the game. There's a music app so you can listen to some music while you work and wait for calls. You also have a Twixta, the in-universe equivalent of Twitter, app. It lets you keep tabs on the various heroes and villains, even ones who don't call you. It also helps you influence the balance between good and evil. You can like or thumbs down tweets. Like three tweets that lean good, or dislike three that lean evil, let's you move the meter slightly towards good. Doing the reverse tips the meter slightly towards evil. You can even do a combination of liking and disliking as long as you get three tweets that lean in the same direction.
Finally, there is the meditation app. Just press it, if you don't have anything better to do, and the next thing you know you'll be receiving a call. Otherwise, you'll get calls at random while you do stuff and wait around; though usually you don't have to wait long.
Okay, now let's discuss the story itself. There are two distinct aspects to the story. First, there's the main plotline involving Ear. He's blind, but his superhearing more than makes up for that. He's a hero, but isn't above using harsh tactics and roughing up is opponents, so I guess that makes him an antihero. He's the first hero you help and the only hero you help multiple times. The main plot with Ear is kicked off when another hero named Scarab is murdered. He's a hero who has the power to grant good luck to other people, but can't bring any luck to himself. In fact, he's been plagued by terrible luck his entire life, and is living on the street when he gives you a call. It only just now occurred to me that it's pretty weird that he was able to call me despite being homeless. Did payphones make a comeback by 2056? I mean, I guess he could have asked to borrow someone's cellphone. In the grand scheme of things, I suppose it isn't important.
Scarab and Ear grew up in the same orphanage, and Ear considers Scarab his oldest and closest friend. Scarab's death hits Ear hard, and he makes it his personal vendetta to find Scarab's killers and bring them to justice. You have the option to tell him to work alone or team up with other heroes, but this doesn't affect the plot of Ear's storyline. As a side note, sometimes the option you get for answers aren't good answer vs evil answer, but polite answer vs jerk answer. I could never pick the jerk answers with Scarab. He's such a nice guy, despite everything he's been through, and I just felt so sorry for him. That was especially bad from my second play-though onwards, because I knew what was going to happen to him, no matter what I did. And apparently he's the third person to wield the power of the Scarab. Apparently it passes between individuals, though he has yet to find a successor. Actually, looking back now, certain bit of dialogue he gives suggest he knew his time on this mortal coil was about to expire. I wish there had been an option to somehow give him a hug.
We'll get back to Ear in a minute. For now, let's talk about the other characters. We'll start with the ones that are the most important later in the game. Why is this? Well, let's wait until the spoiler section for that. For now, I'd like to take a moment to praise the artwork and character design. The artwork looks like something out of a professional comic book. It's just static images, no animation, but very well drawn static images. One aspect that I particularly like is that the characters all feel genuinely original. They aren't just thinly-veiled versions of pre-existing superheroes and supervillains. Well, for the most part anyway. They feel like original organically created characters with their own backstories and personalities.
Also, the voice acting is absolutely phenomenal. I'm not familiar with any of the voice actors, though a few, such as Ear, sounded somewhat familiar, just can't think why that is. Anyway, though I'm not familiar with the voice actors, they all did excellent jobs. I see bright voice acting futures for them all. Despite the game being designed by a German company, the voice actors are all American. I suppose that's fitting, as many have noted that superheroes are something of a uniquely American phenomenon. You don't really see superheroes from other countries unless they're consciously modeled off of American superheroes. The only exception to that rule I've encountered is Japan, where you have stuff like Super Sentai/Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, and various mecha series.
I've always wondered why Europe never really developed its own superheroes. You could argue that many heroes of Victorian penny dreadfuls were proto-superheroes of a type. My guess is that the cynicism that resulted from enduring two world wars soured European readers on the idea of superheroes. Britain tried to produce superhero comics in the 1960s, but they quickly fizzled out. France has a very robust comic book industry in every genre but superheroes. It's interesting to speculate, but we're getting off-topic.
Our first hero of note is Mister Shine & Sparkle. He's got a power set and costume evocative of Superman, but couldn't be more different in terms of personality. He's an arrogant showboating prima donna who cares more about his social media following than actually saving people. There are a few timed decisions throughout the game, and he's one of them. You have to decide if you want him to put down the phone and be a hero, or use his current crisis as an opportunity for streaming to his followers
The next notable hero is Blood Sister. She's a vampire, but uses her powers to fight crime. Though she's constantly having to fight the urge to give into her primal instincts. You'll have to decide if you should let her take a bite of the delivery boy. She claims to have ordered a rare steak, but if you do encourage her bite the delivery boy, you'll get an email from the local pizzeria about how they have a job opening due to one of their delivery boys mysterious disappearing. Maybe it was a fancy pizzeria that also offers steak? Or maybe the delivery boy was struggling to make ends meet and was working for multiple restaurants? Or maybe "rare steak" was a euphemism. Though, if you do encourage Blood Sister to bite the delivery boy, the end credits will mention that a pair of vampire hunter named Van H. and Simon B. are sharpening their stakes. I guess Buffy S. had prior engagements.
Interestingly, she's one of the only heroes with more than two potential endings to her call. You can tell her to leave the delivery boy alone, tell her to bite him, or tell her to rob a blood bank instead. Though, only tells her to note bite the delivery boy, and nothing else, results in Blood Sister learnibg to controlling during ending during the credits. More about the credits in a bit.
Our third person of note is Dr. Know How. Imagine Tony Stark, only he's a villain rather than a hero, and that's Dr. Know How. He's got the most options, out of all the characters, for how his call turns out. Depending on which way you tell him to drive his car he'll encounter either Sakura Flame or Pool Boy. You can help him get away from Pool Boy by converting his car to flight mode and flying to the Moon, or by running over Sakura Flame. Alternatively, you can have him try to reason with the heroes. Sakura Flame will torch him, but getting covered in third degree burns will convince Dr. Know How to turn his life around and use his inventions for good.
If he confronts Pool Boy, he will drown...and then turn his life around and use his inventions for good. Uh, how could he turn his life around if he's dead? That is particularly odd given that Dr. Know How has three possible ending for the credits; confronting Pool Boy or Sakura Flame being the only option that lead to the same outcome. Seems like there was lack of proofreading during the script writing. But let us move along.
Fast Justice doesn't have superpowers, but that doesn't stop him from enacting justice fighting against the criminal underworld. If only he weren't complete and utterly insane. I got some Kick-Ass vibes from Fast Justice. He certainly looks like something out of a Mark Miller comic. Fast Justice does make at least some good points. He's right that Mr. Shine & Sparkle probably shouldn't be considered a hero purely because he has superpowers. Unfortunately, Fast Justice being completely batshit crazy, and having a completely black and white outlook on life, undermines these points. You know, now that I think about it, in terms of mentality he isn't too different than Rorschach from Watchmen.
Alpha Nukleus is some sort of cosmic entity who has chosen to take human form. This hasn't helped him connect with humanity. In fact, he feels lonely and isolated, because he feels nobody can truly understand him. He's decided to destroy his human shell, which will have the nasty side effect of irradiating millions of people. You must decide if you let him go through with it, or tell the other heroes to stop him. I recall a hero from Astro City, named Atomicus, who was somewhat similar Alpha Nukleus. Not sure if it was intention or coincidence, but if the former, good on the team behind this game. Astro City is an awesome comic book series; I can't recommend it enough.
On one play through, I think the game glitched and I got a call from Alpha Nukleus before Ear made his first call. I told him to break his shell, as I'd already picked the other option, and I was curious what would happen. Million were bathed in radiation, but Mr. Souls sent me an email congratulating me on a fantastic first day, as he usually does after Ear calls for the first time. I repeat, millions of people received massive radiation exposer because of me, probably fatally so, and Mr. Souls considered that a good first day. Well, he did say it was less about right vs wrong, and more about keeping the balance. It may have been a glitch, but was a damn hilarious glitch.
Imagine Cthulhu, only he's an evil business mogul, and that pretty much Vlad Xthul. He wants to expand his business empire, but is having trouble navigating modern social mores. Specifically, he wants to knockout the competition, namely Dr. Know How. You can tell him to either buyout the company, or have him break Dr. Know How's leg. If you pick the first, it will encourage Vlad Xthul to go into politics, and he will be elected president of the Atlantic Union...which is a thing by 2056. I'm guessing it's a union of North America and Europe. Of course, as Ear notes, he can't be much worse than the politicians they already have.
Our last person of note among the really significant characters is Luzida. She has the power to enter people's dreams. Lately, however, she's been plagued by dark visions ever time she goes to sleep. She tried to stay awake as long as possible, and the waters look so inviting. No matter how many times I played this game, I could never tell Luzida to go in the water. I just felt so bad for her, and I couldn't coerce her into potentially committing suicide. I know that seems odd, given that I encouraged Alpha Nukleus and Sakura Flame to kill millions of people just to see what would happen. Well, you know what they say; one is a tragedy, a million is a statistic. And in my defense, the game doesn't try very hard to make you care about killing that many people. Luzida winds up teaming up with Ear later in the game. This will be important later on.
Okay, those are all the characters who will be important later in the game. As such, they're the ones you are mostly likely to encounter, though you won't get all of them in one play though. We will discuss why this is in the spoilers section. Oh, but we aren't done talking heroes and villains just yet. This next batch are mostly just there to help you adjust your karma meter, but they're still pretty fascinating in their own right.
First up is Sakura Flame. We've already briefly discussed her, but her issue is that the other heroes give her no respect. The supervillain Glaze has frozen the city's pipes, and poor Sakura Flame has to thaw them. She's planning on getting revenge on the other heroes by "accidentally" blowing up an oil refinery while she tries to take down Glaze. As previously mentioned, should you encourage her to do so, millions will die in the explosion. Personally, I'm still surprised they have oil by 2056. Also, millions die in the explosion? Just how densely populated is this city? Interesting fact, Sakura Flame was not part or the original release of 1-800-SUPER, but was added in a later update. I'm also slightly confused by her name. I get the flame bit, but why sakura. She doesn't have pink hair, she isn't Japanese, and she doesn't have a cherry blossom motif.
Glaze is also a character you can encounter. He is pretty much the living embodiment of cold. His mother was a glacier and his father was a sea of ice. However, as his power grows, the planet's ice caps shrink, and global warming certainly isn't helping matters. He wants to conquer Antarctica, but is it worth potentially sacrificing his parents? I wouldn't think it would be terribly hard to conquer Antarctica; nobody there but a few temporary scientists, and of course the penguins and leopard seals. Well, unless people have been establishing colonies in Antarctica by 2056.
Timelooper is trying to get out of the hero business. She has the power to time travel and rewind time. However, every time she does this a miniature black hole opens shortly afterwards. They collapse before long, but they do cause collateral damage. She's on a flight to her new life, but wouldn't you know it, Dr. Know How has decided to bomb the plane. Will you encourage Timelooper to use her powers, despite the risk, or take a gamble on Mister Shine and Sparkle actually showing up to help? You can have Timelooper rewind time, stop Dr. Know How, but then a building gets sucked into a black hole. However, if you tell her to rewind time, wait to see what happens, which enviably puts you back at square one, and then call Mister Shine and Sparkle, it will be treated as though Timelooper never used her powers.
Geist.app is an A.I. that is on the run, metaphorically speaking, from its creators. They fear it will turn evil, but Geist.app just wants to preserve its existence. You must decide if it should keep a low profile, or if it should defend itself by any means necessary, consequences be damned. I liked that Geist.app isn't depicted as evil; just scared, and trying to survive. And if you encourage it to keep a low profile it decides to optimize email speeds; that was nice of it.
Maxwell's Hydra is a cyborg monster serpent, and Ear's sworn nemesis. At one point, Ear even calls you while he's fighting Maxwell's Hydra. Despite the fact that Maxwell's Hyrda gets killed at the end of this call, it can still call you later on. Yeah, this game has some issues with continuity. It can't talk, just roar, but you can still help it out. Give it advice on how to how to treat a sore through and it will turn tame, and fight on the side of the heroes. Dr. Know How will, essentially adopt it and give it regular oil changes. Of course, this end will imply that Dr. Know How turned good, even if your choices result in an ending where he remained a villain.
You also occasionally get calls from people who aren't heroes or villains. Big Bang FM is a news station. They give you information about the happenings of the various heroes and villains. Most of it is irrelevant to the game, and most doesn't involve the heroes and villains you council. Still, some of the stories can be amusing. Speaking of amusing, you can also get people who call you by mistake. One person butt dials you. They don't actually say anything, no matter what you choose, so you can hang up on them without taking a penalty. You can also get a call from a guy who firmly believes that he has called the pizza shop. He will hang up, but you'll get an email from him about how he's leaving a very bad review for the pizza shop. Man, that dude had determination, I'll give him that.
Okay, I think that should be everyone. Now we're going to be discussing the spoilers for the ending of the game. As such, turn back now if you don't want any of that.
Last chance. You sure you want to continue?
Well, okay. If everyone who wants out is gone, let's get into it.
So, Ear discovers a cult who worship Gallion, the Demon of Misfortune. Naturally, they weren't too keen on a good luck charm like Scarab. Turns out that Gallion has taken a human host. Nobody, not even the one hosting Gallion, knows who it is. With some help from Luzida, Ear tracks down the host of Gallion. It is someone the heroes completely trusted, and who had access to them at all times
So, who is this mysterious host...you are! There is no option but to kill yourself so that Gallion will die. If you can't do if yourself, Ear will help you out. At this point, Gallion will reveal itself to you. Gallion will quiz you on the six heroes and villains I mentioned at the start of this review. Get all or most of the questions correct and Gallion will be defeated. Well, after you shoot yourself in the head that is
Against all odd, you survive the whole shooting yourself in the head thing. I like to think that Ear is right, and that Scarab watching out for us from beyond the grave. You'll get a few more emails from Ear, and he will also send you a new music file. Press play on it, and the credits will begin The credits begin by showing how all the heroes and villains you helped fared.
Which endings are good, and which are bad, are a matter of personal perspective. I will say that some of them are counterintuitive. For example, if you let Alpha Nukleus shed his human shell, he'll find a heroine who actually understand him. Stopping him makes him turn hostile to the heroes, and it's clear he still has the capability to do it, and is just licking his wounds for now. Similarly, having Sakura Flame blow up the oil refinery, and kill millions of people, gets her the validation she craves. Convincing her not to causes her to get assigned to a penguin research station in Antarctica, though it is mentioned that she is content and happy. Oh, and this can happen even if you encourage Glaze to take control of Antarctica. Amusingly, even the guy who tried to order pizza gets an ending tell how he is doing.
Mr. Souls ending always has him get promoted to managing a hotline for demigods. Is that hint about a potential future game. Because if so, that sounds like a totally awesome idea. You could have the callers be children of different god; and not just the Greco-Roman gods, you could also have children of the Egyptian, Norse, Japanese, Yoruba, Maya, Celtic, or any other pantheon. Trust me, there is a huge untapped market for a game like that. I will rally the Percy Jackson fandom in an instant if you guys are seriously going to make a game like that. But I'm getting off track again.
You can still look around after the credits, though you won't get any more calls. You will still get emails from heroes and villains remarking on how boring everything is now. I guess it's the game going "You're still here? The game is over, go home." Ear will even decide to leave the city as he feels it no longer needs him. Of course, you can replay the game as you wish. I will say that, after about five or six play throughs, I'd experienced pretty much everything there was to be experienced.
Okay, so overall I greatly enjoy this game, but are there any improvements I would suggest? Well, as I've noted, there are several continuity errors that get downright nonsensical at times. Granted, it didn't bother me too much, but I think it would feel more like the choices had actual consequence if this was fixed. It might also be nice if there were more storylines than just the main one with Ear. Maybe there could be certain events or choices that triggered different storylines. It would add to the replay value of the game. I do hope future updates add more characters, as there are several mentioned in passing, or on Twixta, that sound potentially interesting.
Also, despite the setting supposedly being dystopian, I didn't really see it. Well, other than the whole irradiating millions of people being considered a good first day thing. Yeah, there is collateral damage from fights between heroes and villains, but that hardly makes things dystopian.
Still, overall these are minor criticisms. I was very impressed with 1-800-SUPER, and I had a lot of fun playing it. I'd love to see the world of this game expanded upon either in updates or maybe in a sequel game. And I'd just like to reiterate that you guys really should give thought to making a demigod hotline game. I'm just saying, huge untapped market to cash in on. But getting back on topic, I strongly recommend you download 1-800-SUPER today. Believe me, you will be glad that you did.

Logical Problems with Ch137

Before I start, let me make some things clear: I understand that there are two chapters left, and some things will be explained in 138. No, I don't think aot will be anime got. Yes, I still trust Yams to give us a "good ending. No, calling everyone that dislikes the chapter a crazy yeagerist isn't a valid rebuttal. Yes, I'm open to discussing all of these things. Now let's get on with it.

  1. Ymir taking Armin and bringing him to Zeke- This was the direct key to stopping the rumbling (which we figured out in chapter 135 is all her doing). Ymir led Armin to stop her. We did get introduced to the idea that Ymir wants something from her subjects in 137, so maybe she saw that Armin could get her that something. There's also the theory that this is all Ymir's master plan, and Armin is just a pawn for her to get whatever it is that she wants.

  1. Zeke bringing back just the right people- Armin implies that it is Zeke who woke up the past shifters. Zeke never met Kruger. Eren didn't show him any memories with Kruger in them. How would Zeke know whether Kruger would support the Alliance or not? The past shifters can't talk as it is just their wills reembodied. There's no way he could have discussed this with Kruger. He doesn't know the man at all. All I can think of is Zeke having the capability to tap into all of the shifter's memories. After Zeke looks at Kruger's memories, he went with a gamble and guessed that he'd be willing to help. This theory still has plot holes as it is just something I just came up with within an attempt to justify this.

  1. Ymir allows defeat- We can see Ymir standing in paths as all of the shifters Zeke brought back are standing there. She knows that they're returning to fight. The royal blood connection is still intact since Zeke is still alive. Ymir does nothing. She allows the previous titan shifters to return and help the Alliance end the rumbling. Zeke appears and welcomes death. The past shifters are defending the Alliance. The royal blood connection is still there. Ymir does nothing. What Zeke does can't override her will because Eren freed her from the royal family. If Zeke being in paths>Ymir being in paths then the enthusiasm plan would have gone through. Ymir ultimately has control over all of her subjects. Again, whatever this something is that Ymir wants from her subjects probably plays a part in her (non)actions, and we'll get answers to this next chapter.

  1. Annie, Pieck, Falco, and Reiner keeping their titan powers- Eren only wishes for the freedom of Paradis. None of the people listed are from Paradis. According to Eren's logic, they're apart of the people he needs to steal freedom from to gain his own. Why are they being allowed freedom? Being Eldian can't a reason as he's stolen the freedom (killed) hundreds of them already. The most common thing I've heard is that he thinks of Falco and Reiner as his friends because of what went down in Marley. Not only does this theory not account for Annie and Picek, but it's not consistent. Eren also shared a moment with the pickpocket kid in Marley, yet he wasn't spared. Another theory we've heard since the beginning of the rumbling is that Eren wants to be stopped. I think this theory goes against his whole character (because his goal is to keep moving forward), but I haven't read much on it to be fair.

  1. Not a single Alliance death- Thousands of wall, colossus, war hammer, attack, beast, female, jaw, armored, and cart titans. These titans can assess the situation to attack accordingly. Also, pure titan for defense. Zero alliance deaths during battle. Not a single one of these thousands of titans manages to kill a single member of the alliance while fighting. I don't know what else to say about that. This makes zero sense. These titans couldn't eat at least Connie's ass for fucks sake. I'm not one to bitch about plot armor (as it comes naturally in anime), but this is another level. A reason for this may be that Eren/Ymir doesn't want any of them to die, so the titans are just there for entertainment, I guess? I seriously can't think of anything.

  1. Eren allows defeat- Aside from the Marleyans warriors being free, Eren did almost nothing to defend himself. He took the most useless and easily exposed titan form and just...walked. He didn't put up a fight. At all. I understand him not fighting his friends, but people like Pieck and the past titan shifters he had no reason to hold back on. We have another thing that has to do with Eren's true intentions. These will certainly be revealed by the end of the series and make or break the explanation of a lot of the events that have taken place.

Well, that's all I feel like writing right now and some of the most important ones that stuck out to me. Again, I'm open to any discussion/anything you all think should be added. The only extensive rebuttal I've heard for some of these points in this post. I left a comment on that and am still waiting for a reply. If you're searching for validation, I think that post provides some good theories/explanations tho. At the end of the day: some are overdosing on copium with theories, and others are smokin that rumbling pack. I just want everyone to trust Yams. I have faith that he will give us a logical ending. Thanks if you read it all lol. I hope y'all uses this for reference (kinda why I made it) in the endless discussions that will go on until chapter 138 drops.

I believe we can save the species and enjoy peace on Earth, with one shared idea. AMA

A quick bio: I graduated with a degree in Mathematics from MIT in 1999, making me a Gen-Xer. I was on the MIT blackjack team, and went on to a career as a financial programmer, before eventually transitioning to a full time trader. I have a lot of informed opinions about gambling, investing, poker, and HFT, if you are curious about those to aid your research.
In my late 30s, I experienced a manic episode. This is rather old for a first-timer but not unheard of. During this episode, my ability to think logically fundamentally broke down. I struggled to find anything that I could KNOW was true. I struggled to find any REAL divisions between things. My mind ran in circles. I thought aliens were talking to me via white noise on a broken TV. I believed the doctor chasing me with a needle was an evil spirit intent on killing me. I thought if I accepted my fate I could somehow save the world, and sat down to receive my death sentence. I did a bizarre dance to place my signature on my 4D path through space-time. Let's just say, things got weird.
My mental recovery began when I grasped onto a single, immutable truth... a core axiom, an assumption, which I could use to re-derive truths about the world. I had the perception that I reorganized my thinking into a tree of truth, rather than a jumbled mess of facts. I suspect I was helped by my incredibly limited long-term memory, which has always forced me to try to store the smallest amount of information possible, the classic absent-minded professor. Most of my beliefs didn't change, but a few core ideas were altered radically with powerful effects.
In the years that followed, I've come to believe in the power of thinking from first principles. Truth has predictive power, and building ideas from the ground up has made me very successful, both financially and spiritually. I play chess at an expert level, and carry a 4 handicap in golf, AMA if you like these as well. I don't say this to brag, but to convince you that this way of thinking can be useful for producing results efficiently. My friends know me as an unusually calm, content person.
What follows is the foundation of my spiritual success, built up from first principles, by challenging some of my deepest-held assumptions. I believe that anyone can learn these skills to become a happier, more content person, no matter their lot in life. I've given this "speech" a few times now to my closest friends, and now share it publicly for the first time. It's a work in progress.

Meet Bob. What is that core assumption you might ask? For me, it was... I am good. We already have to pause to define these terms... who am I? "I" am the animating life force, the decision maker, the thing making my body move. What is "good"? Well, it's the thing that the animating force feels will improve the state of the world in which it finds itself. Since pronouns are hard, let's replace "I" with "Bob"...

One of my core beliefs is that Bob animates everyone. We are all Bob. Everyone has an animating force, and that force moves through the world trying to make things better in some way. Some have described this as a bunch of mirrors in a smoky room, who don't recognize their sameness due to the smoke between them. Me, you, Ghandi, and Bin Laden, all Bob.

Sometimes Bob gets confused. For example, as a baby, Bob will immediately draw the mistaken conclusion that they are different from the rest of the world, unique. Bob starts by assuming that "good" means self-preservation. And how could he not? Natural selection powerfully weeds out any Bob's that don't associate "good" this way.

Bob then faces a series of formative events. The Bobs in close proximity start saying and doing things that cause Bob to react and build more truths, many of which are deeply flawed. Worse, those deeply held beliefs are almost impossible to change later in life. The misunderstandings continue.

One of the most fundamental misunderstandings is that there is intrinsic merit in one Bob's definition of "good' vs another's. Virtually every Bob on Earth makes this mistake. Bob sees clear value in all kinds of things. More money = good. Protecting my family = good. Wiping Jews off the Earth = good. Well ok that last one isn't so widely held any more, but for a large group in the 1930s, their thinking derailed in this way and they couldn't understand how anyone could think differently.

The reason for this mass error in judgment, which is the root cause of all pain in society, is the core belief that some moments are better than others. If I scratch off a winning lottery ticket, that moment is better than scratching off a loser. If I save my kid from drowning, that's better than letting them die. These beliefs are so fundamental that even proposing we reconsider this assumption takes a huge leap of faith. Many Bob's lack the capacity to reform fundamental assumptions like these. Those with the ability to do so will have to work at it. Those willing to try are the intended audience of this writing.

Objective vs subjective truth. Before we get to the grand finale, there is an important truth to accept about Bob. Bob is constantly assessing the differences of things in the world around him. He's constantly devising plans to further his view of "good", and assessing which results are better than others.

Take a particular moment in Bob's life. Bob is actually terrible at assessing an objective "goodness" of this moment. He excels, instead, at comparing that moment to another one. This is driven by natural selection... that's not a bush, it's a tiger! Bob doesn't realize this is what he's doing, but consider the facts. It has been shown that lottery winners, after a brief stint of happiness, are generally LESS happy than the general population as little as six months later. If you've ever made money, lost it, and felt the pain of returning to a place where you were happy before, you can start to see this in yourself first hand.

To sum up succinctly... Bob's mental state is highly path dependent. Give a homeless man a dollar and they will smile. Leave a rich man with only a dollar and they will be distraught. There is no objective assessment of the moment, only a comparison to the one that came before.

Visualizing the sphere of moments. This begs the question... does a proper, objective ordering of moments exist? Consider all the possible moments that could ever be. Now consider all the dimensions we could assign to these moments... we rate each one on a scale from 1 to 10. In the financial health dimension, a 10 might mean I'm a billionaire, and a 1 perhaps I'm homeless. In the marriage dimension, a 10 means my wife loves me, a 1 means she just chopped off my penis and I'm on the national news.

This is it. This is the end. This is where every Bob makes their fundamental mistake in judgment, a mistake practically required by natural selection for Bob to exist at all.

Bob assumes that in every dimension, you can lay out all the moments in a straight line from 1 to 10. I can look at the moments, see how much money I have, and the more money, the higher the number. If I'm assessing friendships, I can count my friends, more = good.

For Bob, 10 = heaven, and 1 = hell. Those whose value judgments align with his are allies. They are the good. Those whose value judgments push towards 1 are evil. They are the enemy. Destroy them.

But what if Bob is wrong? What if the very assignment of 1 and 10 are arbitrary? What if, in fact, you could construct a reasonable, self-consistent view that denominated any given moment as heaven, or any given moment as hell? In my manic search to prove my worldview was right, the only truth I could find was that there is no proof I was right. This idea is what brought me back.

Imagine we placed every moment that could ever be, condensed on to the surface of the Earth. The moments that are close together in our objective value assessment, we place close together on the surface. We look at the spot where we stand, and assign values... I'm a 7 financially, an 8 with friends, a 6 at chess, a 9 in my marriage... we keep our lists of how things are going. Next, we try to walk on the surface to a moment with slightly better numbers... sometimes we succeed, and the numbers go up. We are happy! Sometimes we fail and are sad. Sometimes we walk in one direction for a long time, only to change our view of the number system and discover we've taken a massive wrong turn. We're all walking in different directions. We all have different destinations. Some destinations are closer than others.

As we walk, we see the flatness of the Earth. We see the numbers around us going up and down. Just like our ancestors who lacked the perspective to see the Earth was round, similarly, we believe if we walk in the right direction forever, we will reach a point on the flat Earth where it ends. The point where we assign 10s in all dimensions. Heaven.

In fact, if you walk long enough, you just wind up where you started, because they moments are laid out in a circle, not in a line! Heaven and hell touch. The Budda taught that you can reach nirvana in two directions, and to me, this is what he meant.

Bullshit. Prove it. And also, what tangible effect does this view have in the real world? To prove that the numbering system is arbitrary, you just need to see that your assessment of the numbers is highly path dependent. If you've ever been upset about something, and then said, well, I guess it could be worse, you're performing this exercise and have felt its power to improve your mental state.

The real challenge is to show that heaven and hell touch. To do this, you need to construct a mental state in which you have reached ultimate happiness in your own personal hell. For me, I felt it very personally in my manic episode, as I sat down content in my own immediate hell (death), knowing that needle was going to end my life but save the world. I felt joy sweep through my body as I was killed, which you might imagine, had a powerful impact on me.

You can also have the view that since change is the only constant, if I'm in hell, than the only step forward is a step up. Isn't there ultimate happiness, isn't there HEAVEN, in the knowledge that nothing could ever get worse from here? You can also say, hey, only one person fits here in this moment, and I'm happy to be the one to do it for my brothers, because I can take it. You all enjoy being in "not hell", and compare yourselves to me to find joy. I'll just find joy in your happiness.

It takes time and it takes practice. I used the physical feeling in my body we all know, that tension that comes from anger and frustration, as a cue to practice reorienting my thoughts. I check in... wait... How could I reach this exact same point and be ecstatic? Practice this enough, and find some thoughts that would work even in hell, and pretty soon it becomes very easy to return to a place of contentedness. You start to recognize the arbitrary nature it all, and calm down. It's not that I don't feel anger or hate, it's just much more fleeting for me than for most. When I encounter someone with a different heaven from mine, I try to understand them rather than hate them, for they are me. We are Bob.

This is very long so I'll leave it at that for now. This is just the beginning, AMA.

The Dream One Piece Game

Yeah, I spent a while trying to make this but here goes. I kind of made it like a speech presentation so please excuse the more dramatic tone to it.
Another user - u/Villainous-Lightning made a similar post a while ago which gives more depth to certain aspects. https://www.reddit.com/OnePiece/comments/k728ti/ideal_one_piece_videogame/
I also made this in video format so you can check that out. https://youtu.be/QYNxfN7Tiqg
Over the decades we have been slowly following the grand epic that is One Piece. One Piece is the best anime that I’ve ever seen. And in every single type of media that we see One Piece in, it's always been solid. Except for... the games. Like when was the last time we actually got a good long-lasting One Piece game. Sure we have the pirate warriors series but that is far too stale and it never brings the recognition that One Piece gets and deserves. From 2012 to 2020 Bandai Namco has been consistently publishing a new One Piece game.
2012 - Pirate Warriors for the PS3 and that was an average game that did bring a new side to the One Piece gaming aspect. The Mouso.
2013 - Unlimited World Red for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS. Just what were they thinking with this game? This singular game made us One Piece fans a laughing stock. We also got Pirate Warriors 2 for the PS3 and Vita but that was so stale that there's not much to say other than the fact that the Bandai felt that this was the series to continue developing One Piece Games in.
2014 - Treasure Cruise for Mobile. And while this game is still running, it's a gacha game that has very lacklustre gameplay and an extremely expensive gambling aspect. This really only exists today because a bunch of people that like One Piece and are prone to gambling exist.
2015 - Pirate Warriors 3 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC and PlayStation 3 comes out and once again it is mid.
2016 - Bandai decides to switch it up and bring us a new approach to the One Piece games. The battle arena fighting game. One Piece Burning Blood releases in 2016 for the PS4 and PC and while there were some good aspects that were in this game, overall Burning Blood ended up being a game that was another generic anime fighting game that lacked depth or any meaningful sense of balance.
2017 - actually was a year that we did not get any new One Piece game. So yeah.
2018 - however Bandai Namco decided that it was time for One Piece to make a return into the gaming industry in which Bounty Rush was released. Yeah, it's a mobile game but it does have better gameplay aspects which are consequently limited by the gacha system. Again it repeats the shortcomings of Treasure Cruise.
2019 - Now this was the year where in my opinion, One Piece was delivered in a genre that was perfect for it. The open-world genre. One Piece World Seeker was released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC and while it had the foundations of a decent game, the combat, story and open-world lacked enough content to make the game meaningful as a whole.
2020 - To make sure this year was thoroughly shit Bandai Namco published One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Another iteration of Pirate Warriors that built on the foundations of its predecessors but it still kept its original flaws.
As you can see that there is no One Piece game that still has any ounce of life aside from Pirate Warriors 4 but give it a couple of months it follows the others in a comfortable coffin.
Okay, there's no point complaining about an issue if I don’t present any solutions. So I present to you, The Dream One Piece Game
Genre
If there was any genre that would fit One Piece it is obviously the open-world adventure RPG. For me and a lot of viewers and readers, one of the biggest aspects that drew people into One Piece was the sense of this grand adventure that the straw hats will go on. It was never about the cool fight scenes or other more shallow aspects. Although we do love a good fight scene. So how we do this is we have a One Piece open-world game where we start in Foosha village with Luffy setting out on his adventures to become the pirate king. He hops from island to island progressing the original narrative. These islands must be massive, Alabasta, Fishman Island, Dressrosa these were considered countries with their own regions and towns and surrounding these large islands must be larger waters. The Straw hats are going on a journey. A journey that they have no idea of what will happen.
Structure
We want the players to be at a point where with each island that they play through, they can look back and reminisce on the journey that they have had. The idea is that they gotta be thinking “We really did that shit”. This means that we should fill each main island with plenty of meaningful content. Main missions, side missions and other systems that we get into later. The game is structured where there are primarily two types of mission, canon and non - canon. Players are not allowed to travel to the next island without completing the canon missions that replicate the manga and the anime to an extent. The non-canon missions are optional of course. These optional non-canon missions could retell the filler stories like Luffy, Zoro and Chopper getting lost in Alabasta and finding a poneglyph or Sanji meeting the old chef that uses ingredients from the All Blue. Even the inclusion of movie content would be welcomed. The developers could include some exclusive missions that somewhat replicate what we see in the sub-stories from the Yakuza series. I also have an idea that there are certain tasks on islands that are exclusive to each of the strawhats. They could come in the form of minigames or just missions that are relevant to each straw hat which can reoccur in each island.
Luffy could have a mission where he could visit all the restaurants on the island and test out their food. Sort of a completion list. He could even have a coliseum mode where he fights as Afro Luffy or Lucy where he dukes it out with the antagonists of each arc in an exhibition match.
For Zoro, we can have him return to his past life as a bounty hunter where he can go around and hunt for wanted criminals and maybe even set him out on treasure hunts so that he could improve on his sense of direction. Johnny and Yosaku can even make an appearance. These bounties could have their own storyline that somewhat is reminiscent of the contracts from The Witcher series.
Nami could have a simple exploration objective so on completion she could be one step closer to drawing a map of the world. She could also have a business enterprise mode where she can run certain establishments that generate revenue for her and even get into competition with other businesses.
When it comes to Usopp we can have a minigames section where we play as Usopp in certain accuracy based modes. Darts, Duck Shooting, Sniping or even duels. Even a mode where you play as Sogeking could be a lot of fun.
One of Sanji’s most apparent qualities aside from his lust is his speed. Because of this, we can do some time trial events or some races where Sanji goes up against other well-known speedsters from the series. We could have some minigames where Sanji can go on dates with other people trying to find love and some action.
Chopper could have some minigames where we could have him take part in the surgery. Kind of a surgeon simulator. Honestly, I can't really think of any ideas for Chopper. He is quite one note with the cute doctor aspect. Maybe you guys can leave some ideas.
With Robin, we could go on pseudo story investigation missions where we learn more exclusive history about certain islands. I'm not entirely sure how these missions could go. It could be like scavenger hunts and it might not even have to be canon history but it's there to help build more character to her character. Elements from the Ace Attorney series may prove to be a solid inspiration.
Franky could have an entire minigame section where we use the Battle Franky Battleships and go on a full warfare mode and battling other Pirate and Marine ship. The pirate ship battle features that were present in Assassins Creed Black Flag are easily some of the best single-player pirate ship experiences so that has to be a muse.
For Brook, it's very obvious that there has to be some level of music involved. So the most fitting feature for Brook would be a rhythm minigame. Like a karaoke or a guitar hero mode. Maybe even a dance mode that we see in the tap tap revolution series.
If we include Jinbei then it is only right as the helmsman of the crew, we could bring in a ship racing game mode where there could be a progression system of upgrading the Thousand Sunny to challenge other ships.
There could even be missions of cover stories that tell the journey of other characters. For example, we get the Lola and Chiffon in Dressrosa cover story while the manga is in Wano so when the player gets into Wano they unlock the Lola and Chiffon cover story back in Dressrosa. That way the player is still incentivized to revisit the previous islands for more content.
These are just ideas that would be some fun content for the players while not taking the focus too far away from the story. Of course, there should be missions that are incorporated into the minigames so there is some level of progression and a goal to achieve for the perfectionists. A mini-story to be exact. And while they are missions exclusive to each character, there is no reason why other Straw Hats won’t get involved with each other's missions. The reason why we need things like this is not just for the sake of content in video games. The Straw Hats, while still a pirate crew, are a family. They fight, mock and protect each other. They have certain dynamics that when they are visible to the players it can really bring in a level of familiarity and depth to the crew.
Gameplay
Since this is an open-world game, there has to be an incentive to explore the environment. This allows there to be beautiful environments that when paired with landmarks and other types of points of interest the player will be drawn to explore environments of the islands that they visit rather than doing the main missions and moving on. Characters such as Luffy, Sanji and Robin are able to fly in their own unconventional ways means that there has to be a level of verticality that’s filled with some depth. Side missions should push the players to embark on these areas that the story would otherwise avoid. A game like Genshin Impact - while flawed in certain areas really hit the mark when it came to exploration.
Most of One Piece’s combat is melee but there are some mid-range and a few long-range combat scenes. I believe that the best type of combat for One Piece already exists in another game. Once again the Yakuza series especially Yakuza Kiwami has a combat system where the main character Kiryu has multiple stances that can be utilised for many different situations. They have the rush stance which delivers very quick strikes that do not deal high burst damage but small amounts of damage over a certain period of time. They also have the beast stance which delivers slow but hard hitting strikes that can deal big bursts of damage. This can be implemented to the Straw hat pirates. For Luffy, we can see him switch between gears that each has its own pros and cons. Or for Zoro we can see him decide how many of his three swords will he use to fight and each number has its own fairly large moveset. Sanji can have a trigger function where he can switch into diable Jambe and maybe Usopp can prioritize ranged combat but occasionally bring in the Usopp hammer to switch it up. Those are just some of the examples. There also has to be a direction in the development of the game that the player is rewarded to use most of the moveset and make sure it is straightforward to execute. To continue from the Yakuza combat system - the player has to fight a set of enemies that can range from just one to a whole army. The Straw Hats are often in these types of situations and we see them use their combined strength to progress. This means that there has to be a party system that corresponds to the story or a free play mode. When we are fighting Mr. 4 and Miss Merry Christmas we should be playing as Usopp and Chopper as a party kind of like how it is in Final Fantasy 7 remake or How it is in Genshin Impact single-player mode where the only character on the field is the playable character and the other characters in the party are on standby waiting to switch in.
There shouldn't be a requirement for the player to execute Tekken level combos just to defeat the opponent the most effective way but the player must use their skills and logic to beat enemies. This means that the enemies have to be capable of defeating us but give the player a way to beat them. A weakness. There should be more of a focus on a balance between offence and defence - if Luffy gets hit during an attack animation then Luffy should be hit out of the animation and enter a recovery phase and maybe not be invulnerable. This kind of rule shouldn’t be set in stone when we get into a moment where we are Gear 4th Luffy fighting mob enemies. Frame data that we see in fighting games should be implemented, but of course, the Straw Hats should be outputting faster attacks than the NPC’s that they fight. This is not a balanced fighting game. Devil May Cry 5 is the standard that this game should be aiming for. That game has one primary way of fighting depending on the character that you play as but there are other methods of combat that are not as fleshed out but are there to supplement the primary mode of combat just to give more freedom to the player.
One Piece has a way of writing the story into its fight scenes. Each of the Straw Hats undergoes their own mini character arc when they do their main fight for the arc. They only “win” their fight if their arc leads them to the desired state. Zoro may have lost to Mihawk in the Baratie Arc but in the end, he turned out better so while he lost the battle you can't say that this is an L on Zoro. Characters like Luffy are put through hell when they have to fight the main antagonist of the arc so that must be replicated in the combat.
Customisation
Personally, I think customisation could be quite straightforward. The Straw Hats get new clothes as they go from arc to arc so I think we can just have a clothing store where they can buy them or just reward them for completing the arc prior with the clothes they would wear for the next arc. There are even clothing brands like Doskoi Panda or Criminal that can have their own stores on each island which can have products to buy. We could even add comical clothing like what we see in other fighting games as a form of monetisation.
Conclusion
Of course, I didn't go as in-depth as I wanted to for these aspects because the post would have been too long but the point is to throw out my idea to the internet because I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that there has to be a growing number of people that are tired of the mediocre output that we have been getting. Now let's be honest, the game I’m envisioning requires a lot of money to be made. I certainly don't have the money to make a game like this but all this is a letter to the developers that Bandai Namco hires saying that what they have right now is average at best it's not what it could be. One Piece has so much potential in gaming that has gone unnoticed because people haven't given it a full-on venture in the right direction. But I know for a fact that something that I said even just one can spark a project that could be legendary.

(Long)Freedom and Eren's development throughout the series, an analysis:

We all know how much Eren loves "freedom", and has a strong desire to be free. I've seen people separate his desire for freedom as a totally separate motivation when in fact it does correlate to his desire for protecting Paradis and his friends.
Lets look at Eren's motivations at the beginning:
He has always had a knack for freedom, and freedom in his view is something you fight for, when you make the choices that you want to and aren't restricted by anything else. The titans were restricting their freedom, they were caged because of those very titans and so Eren wanted to defeat the titans to achieve freedom for himself AND his people, the reason why he idolized the Survey Corps so much.
The Survey Corps were the people with a radical mindset, crazy enough to take the gamble of fighting the titans without knowing one thing about them, just for the sake of bringing a change and a better world, or as they used to say , "saving humanity". Eren was one of those crazy people who was ready to sacrifice himself if it was for a great cause and contributed to humanity's victory. (Dying for Armin, the courtroom, Reiss' cavern). He did not care about his death as long as it meant contributing to a better and idealistic world.
What changed after the Fall of Shiganshina:
His hate for titans grew more personal, it wasn't just for the victory of humanity, a greater cause and the fight for freedom anymore, vengeance was a part of it. He wanted to destroy the titans in return for destroying his town and taking away his mother, he wanted to make them pay for it.(Proclaiming that he will make Reiner suffer the worst death imaginable in clash of the titans arc, saying "we will take it all back and make them pay for it" to armin and mikasa in uprising arc).
What changed after finding out that he himself is a titan:
He had a very strong hate for the titans in him, as he saw them as the "monsters" who took everything away from him and needed to be defeated in order to bring hope to humanity. These monsters were the most despicable creatures who needed to be destroyed at all costs. But then, he turned out to be one of these very titans. He started seeing himself as a monster due to his already internalized hate for the titans. Even so, he thought he was special, the one person who can actually enact a change in the order of things, he thought him being a titan could be a vessel for humanity, which would bring them glory.
What changed after finding out Reiner and Bertholdt are titans too:
He was shaken, confused and shocked. He resonated with Reiner and Bertholdt a lot as people who lost everything valuable to them, their home and freedom to the titans, he respected both of them very much and he had difficulty processing the fact that two titans who destroyed his town and took away all from him were Reiner and Bertholdt, he was taken aback by pure shock.
Also, I think its interesting to note that whenever the topic of killing ReineBertholdt was brought up, he used the words like "I have to kill him" or " we will have to make them pay for it" as if there is no other option, he deemed it necessary for what it is.
What changed after Hannes' death:
Eren viewed himself as someone special who can save people and be someone important after finding out he is a titan and all of the "hope for humanity's survival" talk. Him not being able to prevent Hannes' death hit him very hard. This was the peak of his frustration and inferiority complex.
He started accepting Mikasa's care after this and became a person who takes care of their responsibilities and the power they have been given.
What changed in the Reiss cavern:
Upon learning the information that it was his own dad who massacred the Reiss family and stole the founding titan from them, he was very sad. While initially, he used to view himself as someone special, now it hit him that he is no one special, it was just mere coincidence that he got hold of this power, it could have been anyone. This was the peak of his guilt over having so many lives on his name(Levi squad, Hannes, everyone in the survey corps).
He became a complete team player after this who acknowledges everyone's strength and drawbacks. While seeing Historia as the weak one in the beginning, now he admired her strength.
What changed after the basement:
Lets look back at freedom for Eren- Freedom for Eren is a birthright, and birth itself is a blessing. Being born is a blessing, and you have to fight for freedom because you were born into this cruel world.
The basement shattered his dream, in every single way that would be possible.
"Titans are monsters"- No, they were in fact people just like him with their own quest for freedom and dreams.
"Defeating the titans would bring victory to humanity"- It did not, and it turned out the people inside the walls were not the remnants of humanity.
"Beyond the walls is freedom"- Beyond the walls was a world which even further restricted him, a world that wanted to kill people like him, and the walls were infact keeping peace between the outside world and Paradis.
Like anyone would be, he was pretty much in shock and still trying to keep up with all of the information from the basement(His dad's memories and all).
Even just before inheriting his future memories, we see him wondering, what was it in the basement, was it hope?, or was it despair? He has not come to any conclusion yet, he is still thinking what to do, and just so, he is hit by another huge ass memory dump let alone properly processing the truth of the basement.
The change after the memories:
A large part of Eren's development post timeskip has been in him accepting the rumbling as part of what he wants. He has always wanted to bring a change by himself and do something for his people/gain freedom for them. There is a part of him that desires to ultimately sacrifice his life for a greater cause/goal/mission and would do anything to achieve it. The same part that was ready to die if it makes a definitive change and would risk his life even if it meant a little.
Chapter 130 tells us that Eren is subconsciously supporting ignorance. Ignorance is away from freedom, so that would mean knowledge is freedom. The rumbling is destruction of that very knowledge. He offered to wipe away Historia's memories if she could not bear the guilt which is again creating ignorance, taking away Historia's awareness of the rumbling before it happened. So here we are led to believe that by the rumbling Eren is eradicating every single thing just to make a definitive change, ensure Paradis' safety, but yet he deemed it necessary for the survival of Paradis.
Right now, he still has a dehumanized view of his "enemies", referring to them as "animals" and wishing for their "destruction". But again, he thought that he has to do this ("I have to do this") as if there is no other solid option. The 50 year plan is a huge gamble for Paradis and it continues that same very monstrous titan cycle that Eren felt that he had crushed back in the cavern. All other alternatives are terrible for Paradis, except a half-world rumbling which would essentially create a post -apocalyptic world-type situation, but Eren still does not want that because it would only create chaos, he wants to legitimately ensure Paradis' survival and for everything to end once and for all.
Now, the big change after Marley:
Chapter 131 and Chapter 99/100 are my favorites in the manga, because they show us pretty much the peak of his development.
131 is where he realizes that the rumbling is in fact not as necessary as he claims it to be, that he would be just be doing an act this monstrous and extreme because of his want to bring a definitive change and the disappointment the outside world has caused him. Here, it all hits him. He is no better than the world leaders who tried to destroy Paradis. He has become a part of that very cycle that he used to criticize(preemptive massacre), and he is aware of it. Here, it hit him that point of view is what matters, no one can ignore their own history, environment, it really is all a matter of perspective. Now, he just follows his own self, succumbing to his fate while still believing in it, trying to find the "hope beyond the hell", just doing what he has to do(in his point of view). He now is aware of his own lack of finding true freedom and satisfaction, and also acknowledges that after all he is supporting ignorance.
Chapter 99 and 100 shows you what changed after 131, how he has finally matured and changed.
I think it is interesting to note here that Isayama once recently said that Eren represents a part of him that he did not want to notice, and he also said he feels motivated whilst drawing him.
Now, here is his answer when asked if the series passes a judgement on what is right or wrong:
"Ultimately, I don’t think the series passes judgment on what is “right” or “wrong.” For example, when I read Furuya Minoru’s “Himeanole,” I knew society would consider the serial killer in the story unforgivable under social norms. But when I took into account his life and background I still wondered, “If this was his nature, then who is to blame…?” I even thought, “Is it merely coincidence that I wasn’t born as a murderer?” We justify what we absolutely cannot accomplish as “a flaw due to lack of effort,” and there is bitterness within that. On the other hand, for a perpetrator, having the mindset of “It’s not because I lack effort that I became like this” is a form of solace. We cannot deny that under such circumstances, the victims’ feelings are very important. But considering the root of the issue, rather than evaluating “what is right”…to be influenced by various other works and their philosophies, and to truthfully illustrate my exact feelings during those moments - I think that’s what Shingeki no Kyojin’s ending will resemble."
Sounds familiar, right? Is Isayama here trying to say that a serial killer is right? Obviously not. What is he really trying to convey then?
That the root of the issue and point of view is always more important than laying it down as simply "right" or "wrong". Off course what a serial killer is doing is not right, but in his own perspective, he feels that he is right, and who is to blame here? His history, his environment, the ignorance of the people around him, and perhaps, maybe he was just born this way?(I think we were born this way)
Conclusion: Eren doing the rumbling is a mix of his desire to fight for freedom, the future memories, the immense burden of having so many deaths on his name(His mother, Levi squad, Hannes, and every single person who died to protect him) and his radical mindset. The "contradictions" within his motivations that we see are in fact not exactly contradictions, but the result of him putting immense burden on himself and not knowing what to do exactly, thus the attack on liberio which wasn't responsible of him to do, led to Sasha's death and he ended up putting even more blame on himself while still being as determined as ever.
The "selfish desire for freedom" is not anything separate from his desire to protect his friends, Paradis and bringing a change, but it rather all correlates to who he is at the core of his being and his own struggles with depression and despair.
