People like the harken back to the first few sonic games as being the pinnacles of fun - but I think that's probably just wishful thinking. I mean, honestly, what was the core draw of the sonic games? Going fast and going right? One would think it would be the fluid style of play - you want to go fast, and right, and jump and soar and kill enemies and gather rings all fluidly. But, the first games didn't have that. Maybe in like the first zone, but after that it very rarely let you run for more than a couple seconds. There was never any warning for obstacles or enemies. The game would just as often give you a speed boost and then abruptly stop you for some really heavy and tedious platforming, or run you right into an enemy. It just seems like the core mechanic of the first Sonic games was to make you want to do something (run fast) and continuously dangle it in front of you then whack you with a stick. And who doesn't remember all the crazy, mazelike environents (Casino, Mystic Cave), The Barrel, the drowning, and terrible platforming... I mean, if that's what we're calling a Sonic game, Mario or Bit Trip Runner is a better Sonic game than Sonic. I will, however, agree that, if any of the Sonic Games embodied this flow gameplay, it would probably be Sonic 3 - though even it is not blameless - it's platforming was just far more palatable. I will also say I have not played some of the more recent Sonic releases - so maybe they have actually improved and tried to more honestly adhere to this flow type of game. Although, mostly, from what I've seen of recordings, unless you closely adhere to what the dev thinks you should do, you're more likely than not going to fall through the stage or something... What do you think embodies a well-made and fun Sonic game?
