In the next couple weeks, Mountain Crest Acquisition Corp is taking Playboy public. The existing ticker MCAC will become PLBY. Special purpose acquisition companies have taken private companies public in recent months with great success. I believe this will be no exception. Notably, Playboy is profitable and has skyrocketing revenue going into a transformational growth phase.
Porn - First and foremost, let's talk about porn. I know what you guys are thinking. “Porno mags are dead. Why would I want to invest in something like that? I can get porn for free online.” Guess what? You are absolutely right. And that’s exactly why Playboy doesn’t do that anymore. That’s right, they eliminated their print division. Gambling - Some of you might recognize the Playboy brand from gambling trips to places like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Cancun, London or Macau. They’ve been in the gambling biz for decades through their casinos, clubs, and licensed gaming products. They see the writing on the wall. COVID is accelerating the transition to digital, application based GAMBLING. That’s right. What we are doing on Robinhood with risky options is gambling, and the only reason regulators might give a shit anymore is because we are making too much money. There may be some restrictions put in place, but gambling from your phone on your couch is not going anywhere. Cannabis - If you’ve ever read through a Playboy magazine, you know they’ve had a positive relationship with cannabis for many years. As of September 2020, Playboy has made a major shift into the cannabis space. Too good to be true you say? Check their website. Playboy currently sells a range of CBD products. This is a good sign. Federal hemp products, which these most likely are, can be mailed across state lines and most importantly for a company like Playboy, can operate through a traditional banking institution. CBD products are usually the first step towards the cannabis space for large companies. Playboy didn’t make these products themselves meaning they are working with a processor in the cannabis industry. Another good sign for future expansion. What else do they have for sale? This speaks to their ability to maintain a financially solvent company throughout the transition phase to the aforementioned areas. They’d say some fancy shit like “expanded business model to encompass four key revenue streams: Sexual Wellness, Style & Apparel, Gaming & Lifestyle, and Beauty & Grooming.” I hear “we’re just biding our time with these trinkets until those dollar dollar bill y’all markets are fully up and running.” But the truth is these existing revenue streams are profitable, scalable, and rapidly expanding Playboy’s e-commerce segment around the world.

Ben “The Bridge” Kohn is an interesting guy. He’s the connection between Rizvi Traverse and Playboy. He’s both CEO of Playboy and was previously Managing Partner at Rizvi Traverse. Ben seems to be the voice of the Playboy-Rizvi partnership, which makes sense with Suhail’s privacy concerns. Kohn said this:

These guys are good. They have a proven track record of success across multiple industries. Connections and money run deep with all of these guys. I don’t think they’re in the game to lose.
I was going to write a couple more paragraphs about why you should have a look at this but really the best thing you can do is read this SEC filing from a couple days ago. It explains the situation in far better detail. Specifically, look to page 137 and read through their strategy. Also, look at their ownership percentages and compensation plans including the stock options and their prices. The financials look great, revenue is up 90% Q3, and it looks like a bright future.

I’m hesitant to attach this because his position seems short term, but I’m going to with a warning because he does hit on some good points (two are below his link) and he’s got a sizable position in this thing (500k+ on margin, I think). Current Cultural Significance and Meme Value: A year ago I wouldn’t have included this section but the events from the last several weeks (even going back to tsla) have proven that a company’s ability to meme and/or gain social network popularity can have an effect. Tik-tok, Snapchat, Twitch, Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter. They all have Playboy stuff on them. Kids in middle and highschool know what Playboy is but will likely never see or touch one of the magazines in person. They’ll have a Playboy hoodie though. Crazy huh? A lot like GME, PLBY would hugely benefit from meme-value stock interest to drive engagement towards their new business model while also building strategic coffers. This interest may not directly and/or significantly move the stock price but can generate significant interest from larger players who will.
Bull Case: The year is 2025. Playboy is now the world leader pleasure brand. They began by offering Playboy licensed gaming products, including gambling products, direct to consumers through existing names. By 2022, demand has skyrocketed and Playboy has designed and released their own gambling platforms. In 2025, they are also a leading cannabis brand in the United States and Canada with proprietary strains and products geared towards sexual wellness. Cannabis was legalized in the US in 2023 when President Biden got glaucoma but had success with cannabis treatment. He personally pushes for cannabis legalization as he steps out of office after his first term. Playboy has also grown their brand in China and India to multi-billion per year markets. The stock goes up from 11ish to 100ish and everyone makes big gains buying somewhere along the way.

There is a concept called Carcinisation. It is convergent evolution. Crustacean-like creatures evolve into a crab-like form. What is fucking freaky is that this has happened in nature no less than five different times, separated by millions of years.
Nature. Wants. Crabs.
In the early 90’s, a brand new sound emerged out of the Pacific Northwest. Grunge exploded onto MTV and the airwaves and blew all the hair spray out of hair metal. 80’s synth pop just withered and died. Screaming Trees and Soundgarden and Nirvana and Alice in Chains all erupted onto the music scene. Grunge dominated.
Thing is, the same thing happened with another band AT THE SAME TIME in San Diego, California.
How could the Grunge sound be born elsewhere, without flannel? Without wallet chains? Without the Space Needle?
Simple: Nature. Wants. Crabs.
...and Grunge. Nature also wants Grunge.
Let’s listen to that Grunge band from San Diego. It is time to check out STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
About Them
Scott Weiland wanted drugs. Or he wanted to go to see a Black Flag concert in Long Beach, California.
Same thing, maybe.
That 1986 concert was a fateful one. Weiland might have been looking to score some pot or something, but he ended up meeting Robert DeLeo. Weiland and DeLeo hit it off immediately when they started talking about their respective girlfriend. Yes, girlfriend, not girlfriends. They quickly realized that they were dating the same woman.
Awkward.
Presumably, Weiland and DeLeo enjoyed the show. It was Black Flag, after all, with Henry Rollins on vocals. I’m willing to bet that the conversations that followed between DeLeo, Weiland and that young lady were somewhat pointed.
Long story short, the cheating ex-girlfriend moved to Texas, and Weiland and DeLeo moved into her San Diego apartment. They knew from the concert that they shared a taste in music (and, um, women...and I guess real estate) and so decided to form a band. DeLeo was already an accomplished bass player and songwriter, and Weiland was a good singer. But while his voice was unremarkable (compared, say, to Josh’s falsetto or Cornell’s incredible range), he had what can only be described as stage presence.
Like many famous front men, Weiland had an uncanny ability to command a crowd. Weiland shared in his autobiography that he was raped at the age of 12 by a man. It is likely that this traumatic experience pushed him towards a self-destructive lifestyle of - literally - sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. He was also diagnosed as being bipolar. So when he was on stage, Weiland would be eccentric and manic and often under the influence of substances. He did not care (or was unable to care) about what others thought of him, and that liberated him to sing, dance, act out, and hold everyone’s attention.
Crowds loved him.
Weiland initially had some friends, Corey Hicock and David Allin, join the band, which was then called Swing. Though Weiland knew both of them from childhood, it quickly became clear that they were not compatible with their vision for Swing. They recruited Eric Kretz to drum for them after seeing him play with another band at a club in Long Beach.
Kretz is one of those underrated drummers that consistently flies under the radar, not unlike our very own Jon Theodore. If you know them, you know how great they are - but most of the general public would never be able to name them, even if they recognized the band. Not only was Kretz rock steady behind the kit, he also co-wrote a number of the band’s hit songs.
The band, however, still needed a guitarist. They auditioned many different axemen but nobody quite fit. In frustration, DeLeo suggested his brother Dean. Dean DeLeo was five years older than Robert, and had started a career in business, and was just playing guitar for fun as a hobby. Younger brother Robert leaned into him. This was no small request he was making of Dean: give up the stable life and roll the dice for music. Dean eventually agreed, on one condition: there was no way he was going to play rock’n’roll for a band named Swing.
Weiland, Kretz, and the younger DeLeo agreed, and the band changed their name to Mighty Joe Young, after the title gorilla in the 1949 movie of the same name (the movie you are more likely to have seen is the Bill Paxton/Charlize Theron remake from 1998). Mighty Joe Young toured the club circuit in the San Diego area and recorded a demo tape in 1990. They even opened for Henry Rollins - the man who fronted Black Flag at that fateful 1986 concert - at a show at the world famous Whisky a Go Go club in Hollywood.
As they were on the verge of breaking through, they hit a major snag: it turned out that Mighty Joe Young was not just a fictional gorilla from the ‘40s. There was a blues musician by the same name.
So Swing Mighty Joe Young the band, having built up a fanbase, had to change names.
Where did they find inspiration? At the local garage.
There is something about the initials STP. They just kind of roll off the tongue. Lots of people have used them, to the point that there is a Wikipedia disambiguation page for their use. But where most of us may know them is from seeing them on the wall of the high school auto shop or at the local mechanic’s place. Almost everyone recognizes that iconic logo. In case you are wondering, STP actually stands for Scientifically Treated Petroleum, and is German in origin, dating back to WWII.
So yeah, just like the Volkswagen Beetle and the atomic bomb, this iconic bit of Americana has its origins with the Nazis.
Awkward.
The STP Motor Oil sticker was the inspiration for their name. They tried to come up with monikers that fit those initials: Shirley Temple’s Pussy and Stereo Temple Pirates were bounced around until the band settled on the name we all know today. Weiland was the one who decided on Stone Temple Pilots. There was no real meaning behind the name; he just liked the initials STP.
Building on that Mighty Joe Young fanbase, the newly christened Stone Temple Pilots released one of the best debut albums in rock’n’roll history. Just like Alice in Chains and Melvins and Soundgarden and Nirvana, they were inspired by the angry rebelliousness of Punk and the heavy, driving down tuned riffage of metal. What emerged was Grunge...in Southern California.
The album Core was conceived as just that - an album, to be listened to from start to finish. It incorporated many songs from their demo tape and is a true musical journey. The album was recorded in five short weeks, and it is a great place to start if you have not listened to the band. Robert DeLeo wrote most of the songs on the album.
Core dropped in 1992, just as Grunge got huge. Four singles were released - Sex Type Thing, Wicked Garden, Creep, and Plush. You will likely still hear Plush on regular rock radio from time to time. This was a massive debut that got them huge gigs and appearances at festivals. It remains a landmark album of the Grunge movement and was rated #11 by Rolling Stone in the top 50 Grunge albums of all time. However, it also drew scathing criticism from reviewers, who pegged it as a rip-off of the Seattle sound.
Clearly, those critics have never heard of carcinization (or the demo tape which proved that STP had found their sound on their own).
Weiland and co. followed up Core with another monster album in 1994. Purple was recorded in under a month and one song off of it, Big Empty, was in the Brandon Lee film The Crow. You know you’ve made it as a band when your music forms part of a major film soundtrack. Meatplow, the record’s opener, was a showstopper when played live and Vasoline became a true international hit. Interstate Love Song, the third single from Purple, was also hugely popular and is their most listened to song on Spotify today with over 181 million plays. Interestingly, the title of the album is in Chinese on the cover and nowhere else on the record.
STP could do no wrong. And along with this unprecedented success, Scott Weiland discovered that he could do ALL the drugs.
The follow up album, Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop began with two weeks of recording in early 1995. However, this project was put on an abrupt hold as Weiland was arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine and was sentenced to one year of probation. I mean, booze and pot on the weekend is recreational...but heroin and coke is a whole other level of drug use.
The band took a break until the fall, with Kretz and the DeLeo brothers starting a side project called Talk Show. As Robert DeLeo was the main songwriter for both bands, what followed when the band got back together was a weird sorting project where they just arbitrarily decided which tunes would be STP and which would be Talk Show.
Perhaps because of the band growing musically, or the extended time apart from Weiland and his growing drug habit, STP saw their sound evolve. It was more post-Grunge than Grunge, with elements of Punk and Glam Rock. Weiland was for sure his own front man, but there were elements of Rollins’ angry confrontation and Bowie’s star child in his performances, all mixed into something new.
Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop was a massive album and spawned three number one singles for the band: Big Bang Baby, Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart, and Lady Picture Show. The band went out and toured in support, but Weiland relapsed and his drug use got worse. This time, STP were forced to cancel the rest of their tour so Weiland could go into rehab.
Incidentally, I have actually been to the Vatican Gift Shop in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, and found a depressing lack of STP there.
Tiny Music may have been a departure from their heavy Grunge sound, but their next album - No. 4 - was a return to their heavy Grunge roots. The title was a subtle tribute to the Black Sabbath album Vol. 4. It was released in 1999. The song Down has one of the dirtiest, heaviest riffs in Grunge, and was nominated for a Grammy award. But it was Sour Girl - a song about Weiland’s costly divorce - that was an even bigger hit. The video featured Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. Weiland was credited along with Robert DeLeo as writing most of the songs. A tour followed and Weiland managed to hold things together - or avoid getting caught by the police.
Shangri-La Dee Da, their fifth album, came out in 2001.
This album is a mess.
Conceptually, it began as a tribute to Andrew Wood - the man who was once Chris Cornell’s roommate, the man who inspired Temple of the Dog, and the man who fronted Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun. The record label, however, vetoed that idea. The album quickly became directionless and bloated, and this was made even more of a mess by the fact that the band had arranged for a behind-the-scenes documentary to be made. Days of the Week was a modest hit for them and Hollywood Bitch was a live go-to for the band, but the album is largely forgettable and missing a spark.
It was like the band had run out of gas. Or lubricant. Or Scientifically Treated Petroleum.
Blame it on the pressure, or Weiland’s drug use, or just growing stale - but the band had lost something and needed a change.
So they broke up in 2003.
Weiland was quickly recruited to join the supergroup Velvet Revolver, which arose out of the ashes of Guns ‘n’ Roses. They dropped two successful albums and toured around the globe. Perhaps the coolest thing about Velvet Revolver was that they played their own stuff, they played G’n’R, and they played a ton of STP at their live shows. Weiland had supplanted one band with another, and was his manic self on stage each night.
The brothers DeLeo had their own side project, Army of Anyone. Kretz opened a music studio and drummed for the band Spiralarms.
It seemed to all the world that STP was gone for good.
But Velvet Revolver imploded, because Weiland again got mixed up with heroin. He quit the band before he could be fired, and that simply spelled the end of that supergroup. Army of Anyone never really took off, and Kretz’s studio, while a modest success, was not his real passion.
They reunited in 2008 to cash in on the sweet nostalgia do a 65-day tour of North America. Somewhere, somehow, Weiland got his addictions under better control and gelled again with his old band.
The spark was back.
They returned to the studio and recorded their sixth album, a self-titled record. Stone Temple Pilots was produced by the DeLeo brothers and recorded in part at Eric Kretz’s studio. Compared to their other records, which were completed and mastered in a matter of weeks, this album took over 10 months to produce. What resulted from that work was a very different STP album, more inspired by 70’s rock and country music.
Fans bought the album upon release, happy with new music. But it was a record that confused the listeners. Those that wanted a return to Grunge didn’t get it; those that wanted more of the glam punk were disappointed.
Either way, there was a tour, and anyone who missed them last time was just happy that they could see them live again.
But this tour was the last one with Weiland. His behavior became increasingly erratic (who knew coke and heroin could make you erratic? ). He did a radio interview where he stated that he would be happy to rejoin Velvet Revolver...while he was on tour with STP. He dove nose first into the Coke and dropped the needle with heroin again. Concerts suffered. Tensions built. By early 2013, the band could not take it anymore.
Weiland was fired.
He was quickly replaced by Chester Bennington of Linkin Park fame. Bennington toured with STP for two years,and even dropped an EP with them called High Rise. Weiland was pissed and sued the band, and they counter sued him. Things got to Van Halen level bullshittery pretty quickly. Meanwhile, Bennington - the Sammy Hagar in this tale - did a great job on vocals and was embraced by fans. Weiland went full David Lee Roth and founded his own band, with blackjack and hookers.
Both experiments ended in late 2015 - one amicably, one tragically.
Bennington decided in November of that year that he wanted to return to Linkin Park, and thanked STP. He left them on good terms and with no hard feelings.
Weiland, on the other hand, was touring with his own band, The Wildabouts. His 2013 tour was called Purple at the Core. Real subtle there, Scotty. To be fair, he had released some solo stuff too and had recorded an album, Blaster, with The Wildabouts that was released in March of 2015.
While on tour with The Wildabouts, Weiland was found dead in his tour bus. The date was December 3rd, 2015. The coroner’s report stated that the cause of death was an accidental drug overdose of a mixture of alcohol, cocaine, and MDA. A contributing factor was his prolonged substance abuse.
Weiland was 48.
The rock world was stunned. Not that Weiland was using drugs, but that his drug use had caught up with him. He had seemed invincible. He was widely mourned and missed.
STP found themselves without Bennington and no longer had even the opportunity to consider a reunion with Weiland. They, too, were stunned by the news of his death.
After a proper period of mourning, the band made the decision to carry on as a group. A search for a new front man ensued. There was a series of auditions and in 2017, a replacement was found: former X-Factor contestant Jeff Gutt.
The dude is almost a dead ringer for Weiland, and his vocal stylings are eerily similar. Together, Gutt and STP have dropped a second Self-Titled album in 2018 and their latest release, Perdida, in 2020.
STP are still alive as a band, even if they are now on their third vocalist. Though Weiland has tragically left us, I highly encourage you to see them live if you ever get the chance.

"I did see Kyuss one time when we got asked to open up for Ministry. They were on the bill. Queens' Songs for the Deaf is my favorite album, with the very first song which starts out with the radio on the background ['You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire']. That's one of my favorites by far. That's just pure adrenaline. And then 'No One Knows,' 'Go with the Flow,' those are obvious songs that stand out as some of the best they've ever written. Clearly, Weiland thought that the 2002 line up was peak QotSA. And well, he’s not wrong.
Weiland also did a side project in the late 1990’s called The Wondergirls with our resident vampire, Troy Van Leeuwen. Here’s a track by them called Massive Heart Attack.
Joey Castillo, former drummer for QotSA, was briefly the drummer for Weiland’s band The Wildabouts in 2015.

Live Action Cybersix Interview From Comiqueando (plus some hopeful news)

UPDATE NOVEMBER 3, 2020: I found a CBR file of the magazine this article came from. You can download it here but don't get your hopes up. There aren't any photos from the show in here. The whole magazine is in poor quality black and white and there's only two low quality photos of Carolina as Cybersix.
So I was doing a thing yesterday that lead me to looking more closely at the scans of the Spanish version of the comic that were published in Comiqueando Magazine. I noticed that some of the files floating around online were missing the cover of some issues of the magazine some of the chapters were published in. I went looking online and found a bunch of covers from the year the comic was published (and FYI, there's a cover that has Cybersix on it that's missing from the wiki). I looked at some of the issues that were published a few months after the comic stopped appearing and found this from May 1996. Now, "Cybersix" + the words "TV + before 1999 clearly meant the live action tv series. I searched to see if I could download this issue somewhere, but came up with nothing, although I did learn a few things. On the Spanish Wikipedia page for Comiqueando it mentions how some of the issues have "alternate covers" which are just the back covers of the magazine if you turn it around and flip it upside down. These alternate covers don't usually turn up in image searches or on online resale sites. But I did find the alt/back cover for May 1996 and it was this.
I noticed on the Wikipedia page there was a link to Comiqueando's Facebook page, which is not only active, but says they respond in an hour. I sent a message in Spanish asking if their back issues were online because I'd like to read a specific issue for an interview and that I was trying to learn more about the live action series. They responded in English saying they used to be available, but aren't anymore, but they found the text file for the interview and sent it to me.
This is the text file this beautiful, kind soul sent me.
And this is the translation I spent a day doing. It's long and reveals a ton of stuff. I was super excited to get this done to share it, so if I made any mistakes in translating, please mention it. There was a lot of what looked like local phrases, slang and idioms. Also, words like "issue", "chapter", and "episode" didn't seem to be used the same way they would be in English.

CYBERSIX SUPERSTAR

A NIGHT IN MERIDIANA
We’re in an alley in Meridiana. It’s not really Meridiana, but a place in Buenos Aires that doesn’t look like Buenos Aires that Cybersix’s production talent transformed into Meridiana. The truth is, for a dark and dangerous alley, there’s too much activity here: three cameras, several microphones, lights everywhere, a van from where you can monitor everything the cameras film, makeup artists, costumers, actors and even a special effects team. An episode of the Cybersix series is being filmed.
Production began* in the second half of February in Carmelo, Uruguay, where the scenes of the escape of Cybersix and Elio**, the black servant who saved her from the massacre of the entire Cyber series, ordered by the ruthless Dr.Von Reichter, were filmed. Meanwhile, in a Telefé studio and in this place that doesn't look like Buenos Aires (Excuse me, but I've been asked to keep it a secret. I can only tell you that, traveling by subway, it's just 20 minutes from the Obelisk***), the set team created several sets of Meridiana, with spectacular results, with almost nothing to envy to the Gotham City of Tim Burton's movies. A cinema, businesses, alleys, rooftops and even a television channel come to life thanks to the impressive production team that the series has. "It worked as it should work - said the director, José Luis Massa (see box) - as if we were making the Batman movie, bridging the gap. And we work with the Batman movies, with the drawings of (Carlos) Meglia, with photos of structures from Rome, which he uses a lot for his drawings. We worked a lot. With respect to the aesthetics of the series, nothing was left to chance". But my tour of the Meridiana on TV is quickly interrupted. The special effects team warns us that they’re about to blow up a car and that we have to move so we’re not in danger. In charge of the FX Stunt Team (and also responsible for the risky scenes and explosions on Poliladron)) is Marcelo Firmano and a well-known ex-cartoonist: Fede Cueva. "We're really betting everything that this will be a success," says Fede. All kidding aside, in Argentina there's never been such a careful production and with so much respect for the comic of Trillo and Meglia". Then, another of the doubles, now dressed as Cyber, jumps a motorcycle over a car that just a second later explodes in a flash in the best Hollywood style. But it's not Hollywood, we’re still in Meridiana.
Among the group of astonished spectators, the figure of a lady in her twenties, brunette, tall, incredibly similar to Cybersix, draws attention. It's Carolina Peleritti and she agrees to speak to our little tape recorder. Go on, mobile one, from the outside.+
A tête-à-tête WITH CYBERSIX
-How did you discover the character and why did she hook you?
CP: I discover her last year, in July. I received an envelope with a Cybersix comic, the first one, which told the whole origin. José Luis (Massa) sent it to me. When I looked through it, I saw a woman who was strong, busty and naked on a lot of pages and I said "Wow, no! Another person who wants me to play a prostitute!". But when I started reading it, I really ate it up. I liked the comic, I'm not a big fan, but I liked it. And the story of Cybersix grabbed me a lot, I got caught up in the character. She's a very interesting character, even beyond the powers and being a heroine. Her story, her origin, everything seemed like a nice character to do. I realized that she's a difficult, complex character, with a lot of psychological burdens and contradictions. But of all the roles I've been offered recently, this is really the one that caught my attention the most.
-What is more difficult for you? To play a heroine, vampire, android or transsexual?
CP: The character has a little bit of all of that. When you take Cybersix you take a character that has all these characteristics. But it’s a denser story than that of other heroines, there's the background of being a laboratory creature, of being linked to the subject of the Nazis... she's much more than a woman with powers, that sucks substance and has a dual personality. That dense background is what makes it more difficult for me. The rest ... are different components of the character herself.
-I find it striking how easy it is for you to play Adrian Seidelman, especially since he's your polar opposite. You're a woman who -at least at first glance- takes the world ahead of you, and he's a shy man, full of insecurities. They’re exactly the opposite.
CP: For me, playing Adrian is a challenge, not only because of the body, but because of what happens to Cyber ​​when she's forced to play a man. She knows that she's not a man and she has a very special complicity with the public that sees or reads her. She dresses as a man to hide and puts up that shyness as a barrier so that nobody can get in and nobody can discover her. This is the most interesting thing about Adrian’s character. And I really like doing it because in the character of Cybersix one has to enhance all that heroic stuff, of strength and powers... and I don’t have powers, for me it's more extreme to rise to the powers of Cybersix. Besides, to play Adrian, I find it less laborious to change and get into it. When I do Cyber, between the hair, the costume and the flying harness, it takes an hour.
-Do you like the way the program turned out?
CP: I'm very satisfied, I'm happy. We're doing something difficult, because putting a comic on television isn't easy, neither with the books nor with the image. We're doing our best and, being something new, something different, it's logical that it has to progress and grow so that, over time, not only the public, but also us, adapt. What you do in the first chapter isn't the same as what you do in the fourth, at least in my case.
-In some reviews they hit you and your performance very hard, even more than necessary...
CP: Yes, but I think that the criticism is a bit hasty and that they're not seeing what's being done. They hit me for what I bring, where I come from and they're not attentive to what's being done, they're thinking of something else. And I’m thinking about this, working, and I’m really happy with what I’m doing. The subject of criticism doesn’t really concern me, because I know it comes from people who don’t allow change, who don’t want new things. For me the important thing is to be doing it. And of course you can't conform to everyone. Forget it. Especially with something that’s meant to be fun.
-Are you afraid of typecasting? Because hitting it big with a comic book character is usually a double-edged sword, like Adam West, who's in his sixties and is still referred to as Batman.
CP: Yes, we'll have to see what my next job's like. There’s still no big identification with Cybersix, because this job's just getting started, so it'll depend a little on what happens. But I’m not afraid of typecasting, because I think that as you take things you also leave them. Besides, I’m not the owner of the character, Cyber’s parents are Trillo and Meglia, so even if I don’t do it anymore, this character's going to continue selling and touring the world.
THE CITY OF BALLS
The Meridiana of Telefé is much smaller than the one in that place that doesn’t look like Buenos Aires. A few scenes are recorded in the Ball Channel studios++, including those in which Cybersix leaps across city terraces. That is done with a blue background called a chroma-key, which is then not seen on the tape. That’s why it’s easy to superimpose the image of Cyber jumping on sets that're painted or filmed outdoors.
The staff of the series exploited the chroma-key technique to its maximum in the episode in which our heroine faces Friar Moon+++, a sinister children’s show host, played by... a doll. Yes, the magic of television and the talent of a group of puppeteers turned a doll into a living being and the fearsome villain of one of the episodes. After first filming Friar Moon acting alone against the chroma-key, the doll was then superimposed on other sets, from previously recorded scenes. But the Frair not only interacts with sets, but also with people, in a trick of impeccable design.
Another presence that concentrates all eyes every time he arrives at Telefé is Data, the Cybersix panther, here played by a puma dyed black. Thank goodness, the parrot was just a funny little joke.#
Far away from Telefé, in a well-known industrial school, the laboratory of Von Reichter, the office of Lucas Amato for The Independent newspaper and the classroom where Adrian Seidelman teaches are located.
There, during a break in filming, we sat down to chat with José Luis Massa, director of the series, primed for the comics and an assiduous reader of this humble magazine.
THE DIRECTOR, A MASS
-How did the idea of making a TV series based on the Cybersix comic book come about?
JLM: It was one day, three years ago. I was on vacation at the beach and didn’t know what the hell to read. I went through a kiosk and saw the complete volume of Cybersix that Puertitas put out and, as I found it entertaining, I kept it to myself. I was making La Mujer Yogur with Gasalla and it seemed to me that this had things that could be applied to the rhythm of TV and at the same time could be something different from what's normally done on television. On the other hand, being a fan of comics always appeals to you and I also always liked the story of Cybersix. I think it’s lovely, interesting as a fictional story, with this action stuff, reflection stuff, with that hilarious vibe that the bad guys have... what do I know, I thought it was funny.
-And from that idea to this reality there was a great deal of work involved. How was it?
JLM: Hard. Actually at the production level, there must not have been many precedents in the country to have faced a production like that of Cybersix. The truth is impeccable. The producers, both Patagonik Films and (Gustavo) Yankelevich de Telefé, put everything here.
-Who chose the actors?
JLM: Me. It seems to me that casting a comic isn't the same as casting a movie. Because here you had to respect certain figures that came from the comic and that already have life. Although TV has a massive audience and we comic fans are five or six cats crazy, we still had to respect some figures.
-Did you opt for lesser know actors due to a budget issue or because they're the ones that, according to your criteria, best fit in the roles?
JLM: I felt that the project was strong and didn't require big names. Later, when the channel started selling Cybersix, I think they made a mistake. They don't say "Michael Keaton is Batman". Batman is Batman. And here the series began to be sold through the figure of Carolina Peleritti and this idea that I had of making a closed product got distorted a little, where history prevailed and where the names of the actors, producers, director and others were anonymous. I feel that in a story like this they must be anonymous, otherwise it's distracting. But hey, these channels have a habit of promoting things through the figures and "more at nine o'clock tonight night".
-Do you choose which Cybersix issues get adapted for TV?
JLM: Yes. Adaptation is quite difficult. First, it's hard to meet professionals who're in television and who're fans of the comic. It's very rare that people who write for TV are also comic readers. I, for example, learned to count through comics. When I started telling stories in the videos I made, I always turned to comics. What helped me the most was having read comics and having acquired that mental gymnastics that reading comics gives you. Good cartoonists could easily direct and edit a movie. And when it came time to adapt the comics, I suffered a lot, because I wanted to respect the way of speaking and narrating in the comic, but TV demands a linear story. In a comic, you go from one panel to another, and then the second panel has nothing to do with what you’ve been reading. Here you can't take those licenses, because I found that people don't understand. And I'm not criticizing anyone. I’m saying that people who’re used to reading comics are used to jumping from one thing to another, then going back, and that’s not allowed on TV.
-What other criticisms did you encounter?
JLM: Ufff, a lot. Actually, I had more criticism than I expected. Many people are amazed with the performance, the lights, the sets, the music... But I was struck by the ruthless way the press hit us. I always believed that we were at least trying to create a different kind of show. Because the interesting thing about this is that you sit down to watch a story. If you miss the first half, the second won't be easy to follow. And it seems that on TV, at nine at night, that's a lot to ask. Maybe I'm wrong, I thought it would be nice to loosen up while channel surfing and sit down and see something different and entertaining.
On the other hand, I found people who really didn't understand anything they saw. And there you may have made a mistake in the scripts. But the problem is that I still like it and I still understand it.
And another thing that caught my attention in the press is that, at a time when there's so little work, a team of 40 guys who don’t exceed the average age of 30 have been hit so hard. Mostly they hit Carolina hard, comparing her to Andrea del Boca or other actresses... I don’t know, I thought it was weird. Because television has certain licenses for certain actresses that in my opinion are terrible. We’re not going to ask Carolina to be a fucking actress, but in a short time she's made a journey and an apprenticeship that... I don’t know how many actresses can play a heroine, a man, a woman, take punches, hang themselves from that harness... I don’t know if it’s easy. I thought we had all those licenses, but they hit us really hard, crazy...
-How are you doing ratings wise?
JLM: Not as strong as the production expected, but you have to grow it little by little. It's a big risk, the episodes have a very high cost. And more because it's an unexplored genre, especially in Argentina. We've never seen such a thing here. And another thing that makes it difficult is that we always work on the verge of parody. People don't get it, they think that the actors are bad, that they're fucking up. But this is hard for any actor. Parody is one of the most complex genres, because if you move to one side you go to comedy and if you go the other way you're left as the asshole. Here people are used to the joke, to hell with the punchline. So it's difficult.
And another thing that’s hard to understand is that Von Reichter, Krumens and José are crazy guys. Really crazy. I find the character of Von Reichter interesting because he represents a dictator as he is. And what's more associated with our generation, the generation of the '80, than a dictator? I talked about this a lot with Trillo, who, being the father of history, could contribute a lot and we agreed that Von Reichter has to be ridiculous. If we make him really bad, we'd have to leave out some very nice things about the character, which are very typical of the dictator, like when he tries to be like God and walk on water. You see that and it already seems ridiculous, it's no longer so bad. With Von Reichter the idea is to take down information on what a world could be in the hands of a dictator. The guy orders to kill and then cries about the killing. It seems contradictory, but in fact it's true. Dictators are like that. The reality is more painful, but it's true.
-What audience do you have in mind when working on the show?
JLM: It's for kids who're six and kids who're forty. In France, I know that Cybersix comics are read by college students, in fact I think Trillo writes for college students. But you can't count on the audience of the comic because it's so small. In fact, I thought the comic boom in Argentina was stronger, but hey, we have to get an audience elsewhere. In a review that appeared in News, they said that we would have to focus decisively on kids and do something like the Power Rangers. No, that's crazy. As a kid I ate up a lot of shit that the TV gave me and it would hurt my soul to change this project to look like the Power Rangers. And no matter what happens, I think you have to finish the game with your shirt muddied, your profanities and with torn shoes. Don't do what's usually done on TV every time a program isn't going well, they grab and invite ... Valeria Mazza to show her ass. We're going to remain faithful to the comic and the language of the comic, improving and listening to those criticisms.
ANOTHER STUDIO
Now much closer to the Obelisk, without so many lights and without the possibility of Fede Cueva and his team blowing up a nearby wall, is the studio of Carlos Meglia, one of the creature's parents. I find him completely mesmerized, coloring on the computer an impressive page of his new creation: Livevil.
"It’s an old idea we had with Carlos (Trillo)," says Meglia. "It happens in the future, but it's a future in quotes, which could be two months from now. And it’s weird. There’s a big corporation that runs everything: the police, everything. It's commanded by a tyrannical, racist, horrible woman, who is a kind of myth, because many times she's been the target of murder and people who have shot her couldn't kill her. In reality, the woman is a hologram, who is characterized and has at her service a lot of strange types that can transform into rats or shadows, who are continuously around you without you realizing it, controlling everything. In response to this there are five boys from an orphanage and a cat that, for strange reasons, when they feel cornered or desperate, merge into a monster, Livevil, who fights against this woman. It’s a very interesting series, with all the vibe of a cartoon. I’m making it in color, but in Italy it’s going to be published in black and white".
Meglia made the first pages of the storyboard of the first episode of Cybersix (aired as a second episode by Telefé) and currently colors on his computer the bullets points that serve as separators between the different scenes of the series. Meanwhile, he oversees the team of cartoonists working on Cybersix's 42nd 96-page graphic novel##, for publication by the Italian publisher Eura. But invited to chat about the Cyber ​​series, he hangs up the computer for a while and, with coffee in between, answers these questions.
-How did you meet the people who approached this project?
CM: Through Andrea Ronco###, one of the producers, who's been a friend of mine for many years. One day he asked me for all the Cybersix stuff. I said "What for?", "You leave it to me, I’ll call you in two days". I gave him all the books and after two days he called me and told me that José Luis (Massa) and Fernando Raskovsky wanted to do something for TV. And they had been looking for a year, but they couldn’t find an idea they liked and they liked this. Carlos and I gave them the okay and they were in charge of moving all the contacts, of getting the money... and the thing snowballed. They moved so well, talked to the right people and what we thought was going to be a pilot ended up on Telefé.
-What's your contribution to the series?
And, they rely heavily on the comic for things, especially in the scenes of Meridiana, Adrian’s apartment, that bring it out equally. And there are things that aren't, that are done according to what the director needs.
-Did Trillo or you recommend some issues that you'd like to see adapted?
CM: We’ve talked about that a couple of times, but we haven’t come up with anything concrete. They have all our material in their possession: the 4000 pages and the 40 books. And they're choosing, putting together an order. We don’t get too involved, it’s up to them now. We can’t be in the way. Also this is a process, we have to let it evolve. So if I look pale, I don't tell them. I can tell you something only in the sixth or seventh episode, when the series already has a defined profile. But now I’d rather highlight the cool things.
-And what do you like the most?
CM: The aesthetics. I think it’s quite the discovery, I love it. It grabs a lot of attention. If you’re flipping through channels, it sucks you in. I like it so much that at some point I even thought about doing a kind of photo-novel with the frames of the series, because it can do anything.
-And you, who's worked in both comics and cartoons, would you start directing a film or TV adaptation of another of your characters?
CM: Sure, I'd dive in head first. But I'm a pain in the ass, I don't know if they'd back me. In fact, I've thought about it several times. Because there's not much of a difference. Look at someone like Cameron: the guy drew comic strips and then started directing movies. Spielberg, if he had the ability to draw, would draw comics. It's complicated, but with good supports, surrounded by cool people... if you have an armed team, you can carry it forward.

Something I noticed was that this issue is from May of 1996 and in the interview the TV show is clearly still being made and appears to be filming it's 7th (out of what would become it's 8th) episode. This's odd because the show premiered in March 1995 and was cancelled soon after. While doing this translation I sent a message thanking them and also wondering if by chance they could clear it up. Their answer did, And they also revealed the best news I've ever heard.
This show apparently exists on DVD.

No need to grade this roster move, since it obviously isn't a real "move". We're gonna miss the meatball, but hopefully Ed Oliver can prove to be a capable replacement for him. We also have Jordan Phillips returning who made a major splash in limited snaps last season, so hopefully we'll be able to keep the consistent production at 3-tech.
Charles Clay was signed away from the Dolphins while he was a ERFA. This means that the Dolphins could match the Bills offer if they felt it was worth it. The Bills really needed a tight end back then, so they overpaid considerably for Clay because it was necessary. He had flashes of top 10 TE play, but never really had the stats to make him a legitimate threat on every play. He was good, but his contract was always too large for a player of his caliber. Seeing it finally end with the Bills is a godsend to the salary cap, and one of the reasons the Bills were major players in FA this season. Overall, I think Clay has a year or two left of middling TE play ahead of him, but thats about it. He clearly was done with Buffalo so this loss is not a surprise, and all of his dropped passes, lazy routes, and overall lack of effort compared to a guy like Jason Croom led to his downfall as the starting TE (Croom started at TE for the final 2 games).
John Miller was never the main problem on the Offensive Line. There were too many problems on that unit for Miller to be given all the blame. However, after beingconsidered the most improved player on the Bills in 2016 (he kicked ass that year) he absolutely stunk up the joint the next two. In 2017 he lost the starting job to Vlad Ducasse, a castaway from the Ravens. In 2018, upon finally seeing a starting role, he did nothing of note to warrant a contract from the Bills. To see how much money the Bengals were willing to pay him was downright shocking considering his body of work, and it goes to show that one man's trash can be another man's treasure. However, in this case, I'm pretty sure the Bengals just lit $16.5mil on fire with that contract. John Miller is not a good Guard, and he already lost his job on the first team in Cincinnati. Cat Bros, I hope he plays well for you, but don't get your hopes up.
I don't think Logan Thomas is awful, and I do think he could turn into a decent TE if he committed to blocking and gaining some more mass. However, he clearly wants to take the receiver route and go for the flashy plays. Who knows, he could flash some brilliance in Detroit. I doubt it though. He's an ok player, but could easily miss the cut for the Lions this season, espcially with his having a minimum contract.

I really want to give the Bills more credit for this move, since everyone in the world thought they would take a run at Matt Paradis which worried me. But, instead the Bills went for Morse who, I will concede has also some injury concerns (concussion, foot). However, considering the team-friendly deal that Paradis fetched, I find it plausible that teams felt Paradis' injury (right fibula) was more severe and therefore a bigger question mark. I think that teams were very wary of Paradis but seemingly not as cautious when considering Morse, which led to the high price tag. Since Morse is now the highest paid Center in the NFL, I have to subtract points from the Bills since he is clearly not the #1 Center in the NFL. That being said, you need to overpay in FA. Cost of doing business.
Everyone knew the Bills needed receiving talent. Some felt that the draft would have the best options (DK, Butler, Hollywood), others wanted to trade the farm for a big name #1 type of receiver (AB, AJ Green). In the end, Beane did his typical thing where he avoids flash in favor of sound financial decisions. John Brown is not a traditional #1 receiver, but he will play the same role as a guy like Tyreek Hill for the Chiefs. Having top-end speed to get the safeties to stop cheating up on short routes / runs is an absolute must, so John Brown was a great option to do exactly that. I do think he'll be prolific, but this team will run more of a WRBC type of offense, I think. So I expect his production will pretty much match his time in Baltimore.
I think Cole Beasley is a fun niche player who can catch passes underneath. A contract to Beasley is a contract for a safety valve with some fun red zone options. Simply put, this was a deal that overpaid a guy who simply doesn't have the size, speed, or route-running to handle medium to long routes effectively. I think he will fit his exact role perfectly, he will catch solid short routes from a QB that needed a better safety valve. But I don't think he'll ever live up to this contract. Very surprised they paid him as much as they did, and I think having him for four years means that the contract is going to look rough after the first two. If you are a big Beasley fan, I honestly don't know what you are seeing on this guy that makes him worth the money. Please feel free to let me know what I'm missing.
Just... Why?? His body of work is small and his injury history is murky. We have Jason Croom, a standout UDFA that really came into his own last year, along with Lee Smith, a great blocking TE that will match well with Croom's finesse. Kroft is better than both of them when you consider his body of work, but to pay him >6 mil per year just seems like a waste of money. Jared Cook and Jesse James were both out there for similar money and had fewer question marks, but they went with Kroft. It was a gamble, and it didn't pay off. He broke his foot on the first day of OTAs. The first. fucking. day. Oooooof. Bad deal.
Ty Nsekhe is a fantastic swing tackle that had the opportunity to start for quite a few games for the Redskins over the last couple years. I don't need to tell 'skins fans how good Nsekhe is, but in case anyone is wondering "who the fuck is Ty Nsekhe?", just do yourself a favor and watch him against the Texans last season. He squared up on Clowney and made him look like a child on plenty of plays.
Nothing particularly special about the guys mentioned, they are all here for one sole purpose: competition. McDermott loves the competition to bring out the best in guys, so they went out and signed as many guys to reasonable deals as they could. I think Long will win out the RG role, and probably gonna see Feliciano or Teller at LG. But, we'll see.
Kevin is a former first-round pick with tons of upside. He has had plenty of concussions so it is possible (dare I say likely) he has issues with staying on the field since he has only played 8 games in 3 seasons. That being said, if he can be healthy (again, big if) he will probably be our CB2 this season. I know I knocked the Morse and Kroft signings due to injury history, but the difference here is that Kevin Johnson was signed for peanuts. If he even plays half the season at a high level, then it was worth the contract.
Definitely a fun signing, as solid kick returners are hard to come by with the new changes. Andre absolutely torched us last season in Buffalo so I'm not surprised the Bills pounced on him when they saw he was unsigned. Roberts is a dynamic returner and the Bills love their special teams. Match made in heaven.
Gore and Yeldon are both middling talents at this point. Gore is a great mentor and leader that will obviously make the whole RB room better, but he is never going to break loose for big runs. Yeldon was a big disappointment for the Jaguars, who brought in Fournette only 2 years later due to Yeldon's struggle to stay healthy/efficient. He is on a team-friendly deal and he was literally the youngest option on the FA market with actual starting experience. So maybe Beane was just trying to balance out the "Old Folks Home" that was beginning to form.
Makes sense to bring a prolific CB back into the fold after he signed elsewhere last season. He was good for the Rams until he got injured, just like he was good for the Bills the year before until he got injured. Seems like the Bills hope to have some solid weeks of play from EJ until he gets injured. Maybe they are going to treat Kevin Johnson and EJ Gaines as one collective CB? Only time will tell. Regardless, everyone should be noticing a theme among the Bills secondary: injuries aren't a concern. Last season we were down to our 4th string CB on the outside (Levi Wallace) and even he was able to perform admirably. Ryan Lewis, another practice squad guy, was able to be just as effective. Clearly McDermott's system does not require 2 healthy corners. So, as long as Tre White is still on the field all season, we should be just fine.
A gifted English Rugby player, Wade is our International Pathways signing. So, he gets to be the 54th man on the roster with a redshirt designation. This guy is scary good and is an absolute terror in open space, hope he can make it translate to the NFL.

I still think Ed was the biggest steal, but that's probably up for debate. I do think he was definitely the easiest pick of the draft, though. He is an absolute freak of nature with an insanely quick first step and the hand speed to match it. He took on double and triple teams while still finding ways to affect the runnepasser on each down. He was put in an awful spot (nose tackle) and should have failed miserably there due to his smaller size. Instead, he still found ways to be effective on every down. Now that he is being placed at 3-tech (where he belongs), I absolutely cannot wait to see how he handles playing at the NFL level. This dude's ceiling is Aaron Donald, so picking a guy with his talent at a position that was the biggest need heading into the draft is spectacular. Absolute slam dunk for Brandon Beane, he probably danced on his way to the phone to call in the pick.
Another fantastic round for the Bills. They had a minor heart attack before they were on the board because the Panthers traded up in front of them, but luckily they picked Greg Little so the Bills got their guy. This is not speculation either, it is actually exactly what happened. Check it out here! Clearly the Bills think they were lucky to get Ford instead of Little, and I agree with them. Cody Ford is long enough to be a left tackle at the NFL level, and has the measurables to succeed there. We currently have a LT in Dion Dawkins, but I hope the Bills consider moving him further inward because his arm length is a bit too short to be as effective out there as I'd like the LT to be. We'll see.
Far from flashy when it came to the combine, Singletary seemed to just find ways to score when he was on the field. His measurables are pretty fucking awful (check out this RAS... yikes), but measurables don't tell the whole story. When watching game footage he definitely seems quicker and more elusive than his 3-cone and shuttle times will have you believe, so it's possible the guy simply knows how to flip a switch when he gets into games. Either way, I can't help but wish we got Davin Montgomery with this pick. The Bears traded up and swooped him out from under us, so we had to settle with Singletary. Just a shame. Some silver lining, though: Sal Cappaccio reported that Singletary was surprisingly quick and elusive in OTAs.
Probably the most unproven of all our picks. Knox did not have a large statistical body of work, but he certainly has the measurables to make up for it. In a system like Ole Miss, you expect anyone with talent to shine through on the stat sheet, but with DK Metcalf and AJ Brown soaking up targets, the Bills are clearly hoping it's an issue of too many mouths to feed instead of any difficulty in running routes/separating. I agree in principle that Knox definitely was underutilized, but there are a few too many times where he struggled to get open against linebackers that worries me. Overall I think this pick was about standard. Picked where he should have been, so he gets an average grade.
To me this is a typical McDermott LB pickup. They went for the raw tools and are going to surround him with smart people to see if it runs off. Vosean is a reactionary player who can make up for his lapses in judgement with quickness and good angles to the ball carrier. He has the speed to matchup with RB/TEs but can't follow them through routes. I think he'll be a fun project that is going to be helped tremendously by a cerebral player like Lorenzo Alexander. I'll never count out late-round defensive pickups so long as Matt Milano continues to dominate, so Vosean may be a good guy to keep an eye on. He can be molded into something special.
Jaquan Johnson is pretty damn good at everything except coverage. He's a masterful tackler and he can beat anyone to the ball, but he just isn't good at the classic "shadow" coverage that the Bills get from guys like Tre White. Johnson will absolutely make the 53, but we'll see if he ever does more than backup Taron Johnson at nickel corner. I don't think he has the ability to be a true ball-hawk but a guy who can run the alley is always a plus. Keeps runners on their toes. His ceiling is a Landon Collins-type of player who can sit in the box, but I don't think he'll ever make it to that level of play. Most likely he'll be brought in on some exotic blitz packages similar to Siran Neal last season.
Coming from a small school and being undersized is a big red flag for this pick. The Draft Network didn't even rank Darryl, I had to look him up after the pick was made to even understand who he was. I had never even heard of North Carolina A&T. I don't know why the Bills waited this long to pick an edge rusher, but I'll just trust Beane on this one. Trent Murphy better be damn good this season or he'll have lots of questions to answer.
Solid value here. Sweeney was a great blocker and his hands are covered in glue. For all you Bills fans, Sweeney is a lot like Scott Chandler. He isn't going to run flashy routes and break lose for big yardage, but he's got damn good hands and he's a big target. He's a great blocker too. I think he'll head to the PS if he isn't snatched off waivers.

What to Expect:
Disclaimer: This is the most subjective section in this entire piece and I apologize for subjecting you all to personal opinion and conjecture. At least I can be sure it will foster some creative discussion in the comments! I am going to be talking solely about Josh. Sorry Matt, we love you, but you aren't the centerpiece of the offense.
I like Josh Allen as a person. I think he has a good head on his shoulders, I like that he embraces the culture of Buffalo, and I sure as hell think that he is a sharp guy simply based on interviews, press conferences, etc. (trust me, I have watched quite a bit of these). Because of all this, Buffalo has fallen in love with this kid. As a fanbase, we all just want so badly to see him succeed because it would be the perfect QB to be the face of the city.
Now, on to his actual skillset and things he needs to improve upon. I have watched and studied Josh extensively because I have too much free time, so I can say with pure confidence that Josh Allen has done something that he needed to do to make it in the NFL: He improved every single week. Obviously I'm not saying that he got progressively better each week and never got worse, but I can say that he showed clear progress as you move through the weeks. Against the Chargers (Josh's first start) he actually talked to Chris Simms about this game in particular and how unprepared he truly was (starts at 4:49). I suggest watching this entire video if you are really interested in why Bills fans keep talking about how he "flipped a switch" last season, because even Josh/Chris say the same. He looked like a new quarterback when he got back from his injury.
All in all, Josh Allen was a bottom 5 QB last season statistically and when studying his film. However, if we took a microcosm of his final 4-5 games and repeated that through to net season, I think every Bills fan would be ecstatic. He was absolutely electric, so if he can keep it going I think we are in for a really fun season. Our entire offense will ride or die with Josh Allen. Let's hope he can take us to a Super Bowl.
We brought back McCoy after an abysmal year and added a few guys around him to give competition. Because of this, if McCoy isn't clearly at the front of the pack all season we could see Yeldon/Gore/Singletary steal snaps from him. For McCoy to truly continue to be the integral part of the offense that he has been for years now, he has to show us that he's still got it. I think McCoy still has his mojo, and he will bounce back strongly this season. Our line had one of PFF's worst run blocking grades at an average grade of around 50. That will change this season. The problem is, we now have a much more crowded backfield so Shady will need to make sure he can stay healthy, otherwise I think Singletary or Yeldon could steal the show. I know Gore is still productive and I don't doubt that he will see the field, but based on how McDermott has literally only talked about his intangibles and his ability to be a leader, I think he is taking more of a mentorship role rather than being given a big share of the backfield.
To start this portion we need to talk a bit about scheme. I am happy to say I know a shitload more about Daboll than I ever have before due to some insightful articles from Erik Turner over at Cover 1. Lots of the discussion around the offense was based around understanding the Bils prevalent usage of the Empty Set and why it is helping not only Josh Allen but also the receivers. It is creating really cool mismatches by placing Tight Ends and slot receivers on the outside, with our "#1" receiver on the inside. The defense is forced to adjust to this by either moving linebackers to the outside or having an LB mismatch on our #1 guy. This was a simple concept that we saw at OTAs and it led me to believe that John Brown is almost guaranteed to have that #1 spot because this play would be perfect for a guy with his size and speed. To put it simply, the Bills are going to be heavily utilizing the schemes implemented by Andy Reid in KC to create mismatches for John Brown (our version of Tyreek Hill).
As previously mentioned, I think John Brown will be WR1 throughout the entire season. He is about as fast as Foster but has the production that Foster does not have yet. It should allow him to see over-the-top coverage consistently, paving the way for short-mid range passing over the middle. This year has to be the Zay Jones show. Lots of people have pointed out various plans and things that the recent signings can show us about the direction the Bills are moving. I agree that guys like Beasley could benefit from having guys to stretch the field, but to me no one will benefit more than Zay Jones with the speed that has been added to the roster.
Lastly, I think Robert Foster will continue to improve but he isn't ready to be WR1 just yet, imo. His route running needs more nuance, and he needs to use his hands better to get out of press coverage. He is too finesse at the moment to handle guys like Gilmore or Peterson who will just press him all game. As for Beasley, I already spoke about him. That leaves the Tight Ends. Considering Daboll was a TE coach in New England for years I will simply default to his opinion and prowess on training raw players at that position. We have a bunch of no-names there, with Knox being at least a year away from being fully developed. So, for now we will rely on Croom. If Kroft can get back from his broken foot before week 1 perhaps he will start, but I doubt it. McDermott likes to give credit to the guys who made plays in camp, and I think Croom does exactly that.
Finally we get some notable players on this squad! Free agent linemen are almost always a bad idea because it takes lots of time to get acclimated to the guys around you, but Nsekhe has been all over the damn place in his career so I have no doubts about him whatsoever. He is a very good player who I expect will get the starting nod due to his skill and experience. The rest is an absolute toss up. I gave it my besy guess, but I really hope we don't actually see Quinton Spain get the starting job. What I really want is for the Bills to kick Dawkins into LG and place Ford on at LT to shore up the blind side. Dawkins disappointed last season, and I don't think he will ever be a dominant LT due to his lack of size, so they should give the job to Ford.
With Kyle leaving, I was definitely worried about this unit until I saw we drafted Ed Oliver. Big sigh of relief there. I expect Oliver to get the edge over Jordan Phillips, but Phillips has been a stud in Buffalo so far so he could definitely put up quite a fight to keep the starting job. One of the major reasons he wanted to come back to Buffalo were the fans and culture here, so it's cool to see a guy really buying into the franchise. Would not be sad to see him get the job and let Oliver develop. As for 1-tech, it won't be much of a battle considering Star's contract. The staff is very happy with how he has played since coming to Buffalo, don't expect that to change. Horrible Harry should see some snaps, but I think it will mostly be to spell Star.
Jerry Hughes is a top edge rusher in the NFL, no matter what Madden Ratings say. He had some issues with tackling efficiency according to PFF, but I don't understand how that number was created because watching him play I don't remember nearly as many missed tackles. Regardless, Sean McDermott has turned Jerry from a good edge rusher who struggled to get sacks into an absolute monster. I think part of the credit belongs to Star Lotulelei for drawing 2 guys to put Jerry onto an island one-on-one but Jerry beats double-teams pretty often too. On the other side we have Trent Murphy vs. Shaq Lawson. Trent was hot ass last season, but he was hurt for just about all of it. Idk if he will ever get healthy enough to be as potent as he was in Washington, but we'll see. I think he has the edge over Shaq.
Our linebackers are fucking good. Lorenzo Alexander is 36 but plays like he is 24. He is all over the fucking place and can even do well when in coverage. He has a knack for understanding plays as they happen and disrupting them quickly and efficiently (e.g. this play against the Tits). On the other side we have Matt Milano, my favorite player and someone who is still somehow flying under the radar. He played 13 games before dislocating his ankle, but my God was he potent. He is rangy and has a smaller frame than lots of other LBs at his position, making him perfect for today's NFL because he can play similarly to a Big Nickel Cornerback. He not only has the power and hand quickness of an elite pass rusher, he can drop back and cover slot receivers just fine due to his solid speed. Tight Ends actively avoid him, running backs hardly ever juke him, and quarterbacks have their eyes on him at all time. And now we get to Tremaine Edmunds. He was oushined by LVE and Darius Leonard (for good reason), but he still had a good year in his own right. He was voted the most improved player of the month in December due to his prowess over the last 3/4 weeks of the season. McDermott's scheme absolutely requires a top-tier, cerebral MLB who can call plays and fill gaps consistently while also having coverage ability. Edmunds provided all that and then some late in the season after a rough September and October. His improvement mirrors Josh's, and leads to lots of optimism. The Bills were simply a different team on Week 17 than they were on weeks 1&2.
Tre'Davious White is a top-5 Cornerback and tbh I won't hear arguments to the contrary. I talked a lot about him already in the 32/32 along with Taron Johnson so I won't delve much further into detail on them here. Safe to say, Tre will be CB1 with Taron at Slot. As for CB2, we have a much more interesting battle. I think Kevin Johnson will steal the CB2 job from Levi Wallace (AKA PFF's #4 CB in the NFL). Though Levi was very good in his 9 games with the Bills, I think he benefitted from some weak matchups later in the season. He doesn't have a lot of the physical skills that a CB2 often needs to go against top receivers, and Kevin Johnson does. Johnson also has a higher talent level, imo. His problem has always been staying on the field. All in all, it is definitely Levi Wallace's job to lose, but I think he will eventually lose out to Johnson, who is more athletic and talented.
Now on to the safeties, though it is an uneventful section. Hyde and Poyer will be the starters barring injury, and there should be no surprise there. They may be the top safety duo in the entire NFL, no reason to think they wouldn't continue that dominance. With the retirement of Rafael Bush the Bills brought in Kurt Coleman, a former Panther captain who will be a solid backup veteran. Siran Neal had a 100% QB pressure rate on his 6 total pressure attempts, so I assume he will continue to be utilized in exotic blitz packages considering his overwhelming success.

Schedule Predictions

Look, I don't know what else to tell you all except to warn you. I am very high on this Bills team. I have to be, because I am high on Josh Allen. If you think that Josh Allen will succeed but you also think the Bills will go 7-9 you need to fix your perception. This was the #2 defense DVOA last season, and we only lost one player (replaced with Ed Freaking Oliver). We will have a good defense. The only thing we need is an offense to match. I think we will have that, but it's your God-given right to think otherwise. This is just my way of saying that if you don't like Josh Allen you'll hate this prediction.
We open the year with a division rival fielding a sophomore QB. This is going to be a fucking awesome opening day. A war between rookies from last draft on two up-and-coming teams trying to dethrone the Patriots should be top billing! Is this a SNF game or MNF?

In all seriousness, this is going to be fun to watch, and insanely difficult to place. I like Sam Darnold, he is basically Josh Allen's best friend and played pretty well last season. That being said, I still think the Jets OL is hot garbage. They didn't do much of anything to help that unit. They instead added Leveon Bell, an RB that has run behind a top line his entire career, along with some defensive upgrades that are, admittedly, very formidable. So, what we are looking at is a Jets team that is vastly improved on the defensive side of the ball, and some questionable additions on the offensive side. I think the Bills defense is going to kick ass, but I think we'll have a slow start. Bills Lose
Well this is weird. So, the Buffalo Bills will probably just be staying 2 weeks in Jersey, right? Do they even make the trip back to Buffalo?
The Giants are a team that has taken a big step backward this offseason. They lost OBJ for a draft pick and change, and downgraded at some other key places. That being said, Saquon Barkley scares the absolute shit out of me. The way I see it, this game can go 2 ways. The Giants run all over us, Eli throws for less than 200 yards, and they win 24-3 with Barkley having a 3TD, 250yd performance. This could also be a classic Eli Manning 3 INT game where the Bills bulldoze the Giants. I am going to pull for the second option because I don't think it is particularly hard to scheme for a running team wihtout a capable QB (no offense Giants fans. Still love you all for being the Pats kryptonite). Bills Win
Cat Bros are coming back to Buffalo for the second time since Andy Dalton was the Bills MVP in 2017. By this time we will be able to see firsthand the Zac Taylor offense, and I think it could be quite potent if he is able to implement a style like McVay. However, we have already seen the Bengals O-line lose some major pieces in Jonah Williams and Clint Boling. I know there are plenty of articles about why it's important to not panic and to believe in them, but I just think that I've seen this story before with the Bills last season. We lost Erik Wood and Richie Incognito around this time last year and it led to a complete collapse on the line. Jonah is obviously a rookie so it's not the exact same thing as losing 2 Pro Bowlers, but I think Bobby Hart is a tough sell, along with John Miller and whichever journeyman they decide to play at LG. I just realized this is becoming a diagnosis of OLs and I hope it doesn't continue so I don't bore you all to death before we finish up. Hopefully we see some better units so I can stop harping on them. Anyways, this is a win for the Bills. I am not a Zac Taylor believer and I think Andy Dalton will be easy to pressure. Bills Win

I'm not going to fall for the Browns hype until I see them play. Who knows how all those new pieces will do together, they could implode from all the hype. I think the Ravens are a bottom 5 team. I know that's a hot take, but the point of this is to give my personal opinion and how I think teams matchup. I am not the Ravens write-up guy so take these opinions with a grain of salt. I think Lamar Jackson has potential to be a potent passer if he is more comfortable in the pocket. His footwork improved and I like his athelticism. I just think that Greg Roman will do nothing to improve his passing ability and instead focus on making Lamar into an efficiency machine that makes half-field reads all game like he has done with his last 2 mobile QB projects (Kaep and Tyrod). I also think that the Ravens defense is going to take steps backward without some key pieces that led to their dominance last season. Bills Win.

Their OL is still great, their defense is going to get better now that they have a new MLB that they can build up, and all of this leads to a daunting task in Pittsburgh.
