I seem to have come across many inaccuracies on reddit about me, so I thought I would take the time to correct them, and to shed some light on some other points:

“Dr. Vanita Rattan is a doctor, but NOT a dermatologist” (This is Correct)

I am a Medical Doctor (MBBS) and a cosmetic formulator for skin of colour
A dermatologist needs to study over 3000 skin conditions.
I have studied only aesthetic conditions and how skin of colour should tackle them. Areas of interest for me include hyperpigmentation, aging, damaged skin barriers and Acne. A dermatologist does not learn how to put ingredients together and make creams, serums or masks, they treat serious skin conditions. I have the utmost love and respect for my dermatologist colleagues, but we have different skill sets and experiences.

“Dr Vanita Rattan is not GMC registered” (This is correct)

To become GMC registered you need to complete FY1 and FY2 in a hospital. I went straight from Medical school when I received my Dr Title to work in a laboratory and learn to become a cosmetic formulator. My passion was and is how to create the safest treatments for skin of colour, minimising any inflammation and PIH whilst achieving desired results.
This topic had never been discussed before. In fact, I had to conduct basic trials just to learn what percentage actives were leading to irritation for skin of colour.
I could have completed my FY1 and FY2 but that would not have satisfied my curiosity with regards to skin of colour.

“Dr Vanita Rattan says it is Unsafe for skin of colour to use Glycolic Acid” (This is simply UNTRUE)

This is the most misquoted line I have heard bounce around the internet about myself.
These are my views:
a. Glycolic acid is my LEAST favourite AHA as it has the smallest molecular weight and at higher percentages can lead to burns and PIH. I have seen first hand in my clinic, ladies who have tried high percentage glycolic acids and now left with dark marks that may take years to fade. I am sure many people will be fine but remember my aim is ‘ZERO PERCENT REACTIONS FOR SKIN OF COLOUR’.
b. I would formulate myself with Glycolic acid up to 5% and use it as a ‘surgical knife’ to allow better penetration of actives to the basal layer on extensors e.g. elbows and knees
c. In my opinion when it comes to exfoliation there are less irritating AHAs for skin of colour e.g. Lactic acid and Mandelic acid. So why not opt for the less irritating acid?

I now have 3 clinics. One in Mayfair, one in Birmingham and one in Manchester.

Dr Vanita Rattan claims lasers and chemical peels can damage skin of colour, but uses chemical peels in her own clinic (This is true, but requires more context)

Acids are not all the same.
A TCA peel is not the same as a mandelic acid peel
A high strength glycolic acid is not the same as lactic acid.
You cannot bundle all acids in together, they have different molecular weights and different pHs.
I do not like TCA or high strength Glycolic acid for skin of colour and I would not use it because of the chances of inflammation and worse hyperpigmentation. Like I have said before, some people will be fine but if you burn you will pigment. If the purpose is to treat hyperpigmentation, then is the risk worth it?
I use Mandelic acid as a carrier molecule for the high strength Tyrosinase Inhibitors to penetrate deeper to the basal layer where the melanocytes live.

“Dr. Rattan sells sunglasses called Dr. V Sunglasses, claiming they are "the World's Only Anti-Pigmentation Sunglasses…..[and are expensive]". (This is true)

I tried for years to buy massive ‘mask-like’ sunglasses to block UV from hitting my zygoma area (cheek bones). I knew that melasma spread fast across the face and I wanted to minimise this.
I then flew to international sunglass manufacturing exhibitions and spoke to over 20 different sunglass manufacturers from around the world. I kept being told it was impossible to make. I then found a boutique workshop in Italy and they said they could hand make my dream anti melasma sunglasses one piece at a time. This is not a mass market factory operation, each piece is unique and made with Italian raw materials and craftmanship.
This is why they are so expensive.
This is just one of the projects that I am proud of, I had to come out of my comfort zone to figure out how to make a brand new product that never existed before. I didn’t even know if people would buy them as they are massive. It was a big risk I took but it succeeded and now we are protected zygomas globally!

Dr. Rattan also has a brand: Skincare by Dr. V. She recently sold a " LipX kit", claiming to be "The World's Only Lip Pigmentation Kit". It cost £95 for a three product kit of a lip scrub, lip mask, and lip balm (with no SPF). (This is correct) www.skincarebydrv.com

Your natural lip colour is what you were born with. Any pigmentation that happens later in life from UV damage, cosmetics, reactions to acids or hot drinks is hyperpigmentation that Lipx can help with.
It DOES NOT lighten your natural lip colour. If you believe this then please DO NOT BUY any of my kits.
The Lip Balm does not have an SPF rating because it contains actives including Vitamin A so should not be worn during the day. I also am not interested in re-creating products that already exist. I am happy to just direct you to the products. I personally don’t like when companies just copycat an existing formula.

To be fair, I do think Dr. Rattan makes some good points (Thank you)

At the bottom I will leave some references to why I do not like essential oils, fragrance or drying alcohol in skincare. I know some people think I ‘fear monger’, but the evidence is clear.

The fear-mongering when it comes to well-researched actives such as glycolic acid. (I have been misquoted)

I have explained this above. Please don’t forget that the research you are referring to has not been done on 1000 skin of colour people. This really is fundamental. I help millions of our SOC family globally and I can’t afford to give out information that is likely to learn to irritation/ PIH to tens of thousands of people. This is why I MUST be extra cautious.

Seemingly providing outright misinformation, such as the mechanism of action of certain chemical sunscreens. (UNTRUE)

We used to believe that the mechanism of action for mineral sunscreen was to reflect UV and chemical is to absorb UV.
Over time we have learnt that mineral sunscreens reflect about 5% more than chemical sunscreens.

Appearing to capitalize on cultural insecurities and colourism (UNTRUE)

This one hurt me the most. Please do not buy any of my products if you think they will lighten your natural skin colour.
I have been told that treating hyperpigmentation is UNETHICAL. If you honestly believe this then you must also believe concealer and foundation is COLOURISM and UNETHICAL.
Why is it ok to cover hyperpigmentation but not treat it? This sounds like someone who has not suffered with hyperpigmentation.
I am also the first to say, if hyperpigmentation doesn’t bother you then don’t treat it. This is all about making you feel as confident as happy as possible.
For me personally, I wish I could wear shorts but my cellulite makes me feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. Is it unethical for me to try to treat it?
Just because hyperpigmentation tends to happen in skin of colour, does not make it a colourism issue. It is an aesthetic concern like any other.
Some people go so far as to say treating hyperpigmentation is the same as lightening the normal skin? These are 2 separate issues. I believe the confusion may happen because it is the same tyrosinase inhibitors used for both e.g. hydroquinone, alpha arbutin, liquorice extract etc.

Pharmaclinix- Dr Vanita Rattan’s parents company used to sell aimed at skin lightening. (partially true)

My parent’s thought process in the early days (almost 20 years ago) was that treating dark patches (hyperpigmentation), would make the whole face appear ‘fairer’.
I love my parents to pieces, I work hard to make them proud of me and for them to know their sacrifices for my education and well being were worth it. Do we have different views on many things including child rearing, politics and what are acceptable/unacceptable things to say in public...you bet!
Growing up in a typical Asian household 30+ years ago, we were taught fairer is more beautiful. The fairer you were, the more likely you were to get married and succeed in life. We learn from our environment and our family. This is why we take on the same faith and views as our parents growing up.
When we leave home we tend to form our own opinions. I clearly remember at 20 years old, tanning on holiday and feeling beautiful. My body looked slimmer and more toned, I felt like my bikini ‘popped’ on my darker skin. It was the first time I realised I looked healthier and sexier being darker. Until this point I was told and believed ‘fairer is more beautiful’ along with millions of other Asians across the globe.
I asked my followers how many people went through this same transition. 2000 people responded and 96% said they went through the same thought process. It definitely took my parents longer to change their opinion, but I’m glad they did.
The opinions you hold now, will look absurd to you in 20 years. This does not make you a bad person, it makes you normal.

Dr Vanita Rattan re packages Pharmaclinix products for her clinic (UNTRUE)

Our professional treatments are exclusively made by in our own laboratory for clinical-use only, and cannot be purchased anywhere else or sold by Pharmaclinix. Only 1 out of our 5 aftercare products (across all treatments) is made by Pharmaclinix and can be bought online, but the professional-grade treatments applied by our practitioners cannot be bought online at all.

However, many years ago, I, in conjunction with Pharmaclinix made the mandelic acid peel exclusively for The Hyperpigmentation Clinic, hence some of the marketing was cross promotional. This was all publicly disclosed at the time.
I think the confusion happened because we all use mainly tyrosinase inhibitors. You can look at my INCI list for my Dark Circles kit to see it isn’t the same as anything for pharmaclinix. You can look at my facial pigmentation kit that launches in February INCI list and will see the same.

I hope I have cleared up some of the misinformation that has been bouncing around these forums. I apologise for not taking the time before now to do this. I am still very new to this all. I started my YouTube properly since Covid began and I wasn’t ready for the explosion that happened. I am very proud of my work and I am so grateful for all the love and support.
Some people think I sound soppy when I say this is my love letter to my skin of colour family….maybe I do!

2020 Finest Predictions (TA Stage 4?)

My bets are on Stage 4 Team Affinity being Finest this year. Team Affinity is the perfect avenue for SDS to put Finest out. I think it's possible either the top MVP and Cy Young candidates or flashback Finest cards of guys not getting them this year could be the collection rewards. I also think teams with a couple guys deserving (i.e. San Diego & Washington) could see a couple guys being in a Finest program. Feel free to respond with your picks.
AL East: Baltimore: C Pedro Severino (.296/.376/.848, 5 HR) HM: LF Ryan Mountcastle & OF Anthony Santander Severino has been one of the better catchers in the American League and broke out this season. Outfield is probably going to be well-represented without the other two guys. Severino is probably the best choice for a lower end solid catching option and one of Baltimore's best this season.
Boston: RF Alex Verdugo (.311/.369/.875, 6 HR, 14 2B) HM: 3B Rafael Devers (.289/.337/.870, 10 HR, 32 RBI) Boston doesn't really have much else going for them. Verdugo has probably been one of their top players all season. Devers was the 1st Stage FOTF so I doubt he'd be 4th Stage as well. Verdugo is probably going to be a cornerstone in the outfield for Boston for years to come and deserves a little recognition with a diamond in The Show.
New York: 2B DJ LeMahieu (.350/.399/.934) HM: RP Zack Britton (2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 16.0 IP), 1B Luke Voit (.270/.335/.933, 16 HR, 37 RBI) The choice for this would've been a lot easier if the Yankees weren't hurt or underperforming. Voit already got his POTM card, so I think that lowers the likelihood that we see another beefy version of him. We got a POTM LeMahieu early in the season, but I think he's due for a finest. Cole has underperformed all season, but it's possible we see a Flashback as a collection reward similar to how they're doing for the POTM or he could have a Postseason card this year.
Tampa Bay: 2B Brandon Lowe (.258/.351/.920, 12 HR) HM: SS Willy Adames & RP Nick Anderson Lowe is kind of the obvious choice here. As good of a season Tampa Bay is having, no one individual is really over-performing like Lowe. I put Willy and Nick Anderson because both are having solid seasons and could have a very outside shot at securing a Finest since Brandon Lowe just got a pretty beefy POTM card.
Toronto: SP Hyun Jin Ryu (3.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, Top 10 in ERA & K's) HM: SS Bo Bichette & LF Teoscar Hernandez Ryu takes the Finest spot here since he is the only top guy on the Blue Jays to not get a high 90's card yet with Bo and Teoscar both getting pretty solid Topps Now cards. Ryu is a lefty and has a pretty solid pitch mix so I doubt anyone would really be complaining if SDS dropped this card. The Blue Jays have a few guys that could be in this spot but Ryu is my pick.
AL Central: Chicago: SS Tim Anderson (.369/.408/.994, 7 HR, 1st in BA, 5th for Hits) HM: OF Eloy Jimenez, SP Dallas Keuchel, and 1B Jose Abreu The White Sox are in a similar boat as the Blue Jays where they have a few guys putting up some pretty insane numbers down the stretch and any could be considered for the Finest card. Both Abreu and Anderson are having seasons that could net them some votes for the MVP and Anderson could very well be getting a beefy POTM card for September if he keeps up at the rate he's at for the last 2 weeks of the month. Either of them could also be a collection reward for the Finest players as well. OF Eloy Jimenez leads the White Sox in HR and is putting up a solid season, as is Dallas Keuchel. I didn't include Lou Bob because he seems to be slumping in September and just got a FS card.
Cleveland: 3B Jose Ramirez (.263/.362/.876, 11 HR) HM: SP Shane Bieber Jose Ramirez does have a 99 Finest flashback available through the prestige XP rewards path, but he's having a pretty good season this year and deserves another beefy card that's a little more accessible. Bieber is up there as one of the best pitchers in baseball, but he already has a pretty high Topps Now card and could end up being a collection reward for the Finest players or getting an even better card down the line.
Detroit: 1B Jeimer Candelario (.325/.385/.956, 7 HR, 3rd in AVG in AL, 6th in OPS) HM: 2B Jonathan Schoop, OF Victor Reyes Detroit was pretty slim pickins, but I decided to go with Candelario because he is putting up career numbers this year and it is likely the only opportunity to give the man a higher ovr card. Schoop and Reyes are both having pretty good seasons, but they're only there because I felt obligated to add an honorable mention to every team. Detroit's Finest being Candelario is a lock for me.
Kansas City: CF Whit Merrifield (.273/.327/.789, 10 2B, 9 HR) HM: SP Brad Keller Remember when I said that Detroit had slim pickins? Well, Kansas City wasn't much easier to choose a decisive Finest player. Whit is not having his best season and doesn't make it much easier to put him here when he was already the TA Stage 1 FOTF, but he's clearly still the face of the Royals. Brad Keller could just as easily steal this from Whit Merrifield as he's quietly having a solid season that comes with an ERA in the low 2's and no home runs given up in over 40 IP.
Minnesota: DH Nelson Cruz (.323/.414/1.066, 16 HR, leads MLB in HR, 3rd in OPS, 2nd in SLG) HM: SP Kenta Maeda???, OF Eddie Rosario It'd be a crime not to include Nellie, but I don't know how SDS would pull this off. He doesn't play the outfield and he already had a Player Program this year at 90+ OVR, but it would be almost ridiculous not to have him as the Finest player for the Twins. At the ripe age of 40, the dude is still tearing the cover off the ball. I don't know how they'd get him a juicy card with no speed or fielding. Maeda already has a pretty high Topps Now card, but I wouldn't discount him from also getting the Finest honor.
AL West: Houston: OF Kyle Tucker (.252/.305/.833, 8 HR, Leads MLB in 3B, Leads team in SLG, OPS, RS) HM: SS Carlos Correia, CF George Springer I'm fine with anyone but Correia and Springer. Hell, give me a 99 Greinke.
Los Angeles: 2B David Fletcher (.299/.364/.416, 9 2B HM: 3B Anthony Rendon, SP Dylan Bundy I think that David Fletcher gets one of those "fan favorite" nominations since Trout and Rendon already have Awards cards out and Bundy has a Topps Now card (and I probably wouldn't call him Finest). I think a lot of people would have fun putting Fletch in their lineups and could be a viable bench bat against both sides of the mound.
Oakland: CP Liam Hendriks (1.33 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, 12 SV) HM: LF Robbie Grossman Hendriks is more than deserving of the Finest nomination for a second year in a row. He's one of the best closers in both the American League and the MLB. The Athletics are a pretty good team, but there aren't a whole lot of guys whose numbers jump off the page at you. Robbie Grossman has been a solid part of the Athletics lineup and also switch hits, but I don't think he's going to take an outfield Finest spot from anyone else. Chapman having an awards and also going down this year doesn't help either.
Texas: SP Lance Lynn (2.40 ERA, 71.1 IP, 0.95 WHIP, 4th in K's, top 10 in MLB in ERA and WHIP) HM: 3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa This was probably one of the most obvious picks on the list. The Rangers don't really have much else going for them and the only reason we haven't seen a high diamond Lynn already this year is because he's getting a Finest card. He's the best pitcher on an otherwise pretty desolate squad. Gallo can hit homers, but with that average it would be hard to give him a Finest in the upper 90's. Kiner-Falefa was just the other guy who has decent numbers and I felt like giving some recognition to.
Seattle: LF Kyle Lewis (.295/.390/.884, 10 HR) HM: SP Marco Gonzalez These are Kyle Lewis's numbers in the midst of a skid. He's one of the favorites for AL ROY and is one of the most exciting young guys in the game. He is definitely a standout on Seattle right now. Although he got a POTM card, I could definitely see a high diamond in his future. The only other guy deserving would be Gonzalez, but I don't think they're putting in that many lefty starters.
NL East: Atlanta: 1B Freddie Freeman (.345/.462/1.105, 11 HR, 16 2B, 2nd in 2B, RBI, & OPS in MLB, Top 10 in AVG & SLG) HM: LF Ronald Acuna & SP Max Fried Atlanta was a tough choice, but I couldn't ignore Freddie Freeman playing like a bonafide MVP candidate this season. The dude can just hit. He doesn't have a juiced card yet this year, like Ozuna and Dansby, and is definitely deserving of one. Ronald Acuna did more Ronald Acuna things this season and put up a pretty impressive statline himself, but I feel like we could see him somewhere else, like as a Boss, with a really nice card. Fried also makes a pretty good case as well, but personally I'd rather see Freddie.
Miami: SP Pablo Lopez (47.0 IP, 4.02 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 3.18 FIP) HM: 3B Brian Anderson, SS Miguel Rojas, SP Sixto Sanchez The Miami Marlins are a weird team which made this pick a bit harder. They've used more guys than any team and have somehow found themselves contending for a spot in the playoffs. They lack star power outside of deadline acquisition Starling Marte, so there wasn't really an obvious choice. It could've been any of the guys I listed, but Pablo Lopez has been their most consistent starter at a 4-4 record and has the most IP for them. Anderson and Rojas are both putting up solid numbers at the plate, but Anderson is not at All-Star level and Rojas was out for a significant number of games. I think if Sixto is dominant down the stretch, he could be a dark horse regardless of having a FS card.
New York: SP Jacob deGrom (54.0 IP, 1.67 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 1.96 FIP, 2nd in ERA, 3rd in WHIP, 4th in K's) HM: LF Dom Smith, RF Michael Conforto While Dom Smith is breaking out and Conforto is putting together what probably would've been an All-Star season, it goes without question that it is time for a nasty maxed out Jacob deGrom. He's one of the best pitchers in the league, he has nasty stuff, and this card will probably have outlier. Unless SDS plans to give us a throwback with the classic deGrom flow, I think it's time to pull the trigger by having him as the Team Affinity Finest.
Philadelphia: SP Aaron Nola (56.1 IP, 2.40 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, Top 10 in ERA, WHIP, & K's) HM: SP Zack Wheeler & 1B Rhys Hoskins As much I want to see a maxed out Rhys Hoskins, Aaron Nola is back into ace form and deserves his first disgusting card in a while. With Rhys, Wheeler, and JT on the mend and Bryce slumping pretty hard, Aaron Nola is looking like the lone star on the Phillies. If he can play off of the CG he put up against the Marlins in his last outing and stay solid down the stretch, he'll be a lock for finest. The only way I can see the other two beating him out is because he was Stage 1 FOTF.
Washington: LF Juan Soto (.354/.482/1.217, 11 HR, 10 2B, Leads MLB in OBP, SLG, OPS, 4th in AVG) HM: SS Trea Turner It's time. SDS, it is time to drop the most maxed out disgusting Juan Soto cards on our heads. He's been one of the best baseball players in all of baseball, if not the best in the National League. I don't care if he was the 1st Stage FOTF, the only way he doesn't have the most insane Stage 4 card is if he is the big collection reward or if SDS is saving him for an Awards/Postseason flashback card. Turner just got his 99, so the likelihood that he is the Finest goes down. Everything points to an end game Soto on its way.
NL Central: Chicago: SP Yu Darvish (56.0 IP, 1.77 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 2.26 FIP, 4th in ERA, 1st in Wins, & 3rd in WHIP in MLB) HM: RF Jeyson Heyward & CF Ian Happ One of the guys that is in serious Cy Young conversations, Yu Darvish deserves a pretty insane Finest end game card. He might have a Prime card out, but he is still the obvious choice for the Cubs. He is nearly unbeatable at a 7-2 record. Heyward would probably be the runner up for this as the rest of the Cubs, namely Bryant & Rizzo, are having rough shortened seasons.
Cincinnati: SP Trevor Bauer (58.0 IP, 1.71 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 3rd in ERA, 2nd in WHIP, BAA, & K's in the MLB) HM: OF Jesse Winker & SP Sonny Gray Trevor Bauer would probably be another fan favorite card. The dude has been absolutely lights out this year. The Buds might miss the playoffs, but Bauer is going to be in the Cy Young conversation. Skyrocket that H/9 & K/9 to make up for a lacking H9. Winker and Sonny both have pretty decent cards from this year out right now and just aren't matching the level that Bauer is at.
Milwaukee: RP Devin Williams (20.0 IP, 0.45 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 2.7 H/9, 18.5 K/9) HM: SP Brandon Woodruff & SP Corbin Burnes Although it seems unlikely, I didn't want to put another right handed starter and Milwaukee's hitters have sucked this season. Burnes will probably get a POTM for September, so I think it's possible we could see a juiced Devin Williams. It'll be hard with his limited arsenal, but I think they can do it if they can make it work with Karinchak.
Pittsburgh: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes (11 G, .316/.381/.986, 2 HR, 2 3B) HM: 1B Colin Moran There may already be a FS Hayes in this game, but let's face it: the Pirates suck and this card would be more fun than anyone else on that godforsaken team.
St. Louis: 1B Paul Goldschmidt (.312/.439/.939, 6 HR, 8 2B, 16 RBI) HM: SP Kwang Hyun Kim, SP Adam Wainwright & 2B Kolten Wong The Cards are a bit harder to gauge since they misses a nice chunk of the season, but Goldy is definitely seeing a bit of an uptick in production and something of a return to form. We haven't seen any other Goldy cards this year, so it's definitely possible that he's the Cards Finest since he's also their biggest star. Kim has been insane in both the rotation and the 'pen, Waino is having a late career Renaissance in the shortened season, and Wong looks like he's returning to form as well so I wouldn't count them out to add some flavor.
NL West: Arizona: SP Zach Gallen (60.0 IP, 3.15 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, Top 10 in K's, ERA, & BAA in NL) HM: 2B Ketel Marte & LF David Peralta The D-Backs have been just about as bad as any other bad team in the league, but I think the one factor that pushed Gallen above the rest of the team is the hype. There was a ton of chatter about this guy early in the season. He has some pretty nice stuff and could be solid in his last couple starts of the season. If SDS would rather give other RHP cards they could switch it up and throw Marte and Peralta in there (more likely Marte).
Colorado: 3B Nolan Arenado (.261/.311/.772, 8 HR) HM: SP Kyle Freeland, SS Trevor Story, & SP German Marquez The Rockies came in hot and have kind of gone out like a fart in the NL West. Their rotation looked legit, but it was only going to hold up for so long at Coors. The slash line might not be career for Nolan, but he is still clearly the best player on the Rockies. I think the possibility of Story getting the card would be higher if not for his Awards card, but Nolan gets it because there haven't been a ton of infield corner bats and he'll probably have Diamond shield defense.
Los Angeles: RF Mookie Betts (.299/.378/.983, 15 HR, 9 2B, 6 SB, 1st in HR, 7 in RBI in MLB) HM: SS Corey Seager, CL Kenley Jansen & SP Dustin May Why didn't we see MVP Mookie as the 50th Headliner? Probably because SDS was planning on giving him a maxed card for Finest. He's one of the best players in baseball. Former MVP and probably going to be in the conversation this year. Seager is having a major bounce back year and has a pretty good chance at Finest solely based off of that. There are a lot of choices on one of the best teams in baseball, but I think Mookie and Corey Seager are my favorites.
San Diego: 3B Manny Machado (.312/.377/.963, 13 HR, 10 2B, 5th in HR & 3rd in RBI in NL) HM: SP Dinelson Lamet, 2B Jake Cronenworth & 1B Eric Hosmer SLAM Diego is one of the hottest lineups in the MLB. They've been surging through the NL West and look to make a go at the Division title. Machado is having a great season with San Diego alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. He may have a juiced card but I don't think anyone else screams Finest like Manny. SP Dinelson Lamet has been one of the best pitchers in the NL and Cronenworth is in ROTY conversations, but neither is at FOTF level like Manny. Eric Hosmer is putting up one of his best seasons in San Diego and is a vital part of the lineup so he is probably my darkhorse pick.
San Francisco: RF Mike Yastrzemski (.297/.402/.950, 9 HR, 12 2B) HM: 2B Donovan Solano, 1B Brandon Belt & DH Wilmer Flores It's either going to be Yaz or Solano, but I think Yaz takes it purely based off the chatter around him and the slight power advantage. SF has been surprising and Yaz has been a huge help with that. I'm pretty tired of writing these, we all know how good he is.

Cerber: A Mundane Chronicle [PART 3]

Sorry for the delay in updates. I’ve recently had to deal with a huge income tax headache as I can’t exactly report how I’m making all of this money, so I’ve been dealing with some people through Cerber as well as normal organizations. It’s been an absolute mess and it’s my fault for waiting until the eleventh hour to address it.
Many of you wanted to know how much Goat had to pay out. He paid $4,789.04 for the ride and tipped me $666 dollars. I’m still extremely skeeved out by the experience and finding out I received that ominous tip didn’t soothe me in any way. Yeah, it’s cash, but after seeing the weird hoard of doom, slithering their way to an entity that scared me nearly shitless, I’d gladly reject a request from goat in the future. No thanks.
I may have a decent arsenal when it comes to dealing with normal entities, but I’m definitely not too proud to call in backup. Goat paid a lot of dough to travel a few miles and while I’m not necessarily afraid to die, I don’t care for being frightened or played with either. I called Ray. I figured since he’s more of a threat towards children than he is to me, it couldn’t hurt having him ride along.
“Hello?” Ray answers in a whisper as though he’s trying not to wake anyone up. He must be um…working.
“Hi, Ray. It’s Jim.” I begin, “listen, I had a really bad experience with a passenger and I wanted to know if you wouldn’t mind riding along with me for the night?” I realized how silly and selfish this sounded once I actually verbalized my request. Dope.
“Yeah, I can do that.” Ray replies simply.
“Oh, really?” Shocked and relieved.
“Yeah, I could use a break anyway.”
“You have children?!” I ask in surprise. Ray? A father?
“Something like that.” He chuckles. Right, not HIS kids.
“Oh uh, sorry,” I reply shuddering the last comment off my skin, “I’ll pick you up at 11:45, sound good?”
“Yep. Gives me time to find my mask.” He replies nonchalantly.
“Uh...cool. Thanks again, Ray. I’ll see you in a couple hours.”
“No problem, Jim.” He hangs up.
I had some time before I had to pick Ray up, so I decided to give Adeline a call to make sure I wasn’t going to break any rules. Not necessarily that I care, but it would be my luck to cross the paths of two entities and accidentally open up a portal in my back seat. I guess I’m just trying to be cautious in that I won’t be starting a war from a shared ride. You never know.
“Hi, Jim!” Adeline sings me to nausea as soon as she speaks.
“Hi, Adeline. Listen,” I begin, hearing her type away in the background, “I had a pretty weird experience with a passenger and I would feel safer taking Ray with me. Is that cool?” I finish, wincing at my own words.
“Sure, Jim.” She answers plainly.
“Ok...thanks.” I’m a little suspicious at how easy that was.
“Anything else, Jim?” She stops typing.
“I guess not. You’re really ok with me having backup?” I ask, still suspicious.
“Absolutely, Jim. Your safety is important to us and if having Ray with you will make you feel safe, then that’s a reasonable request.” She replies.
“Are you being funny with me?” I push.
“Nope! It’s smart to have the trinkets and guns, but it’s wise to understand that a man has his limits in ability. Plus, having such a skilled entity as Ray in the car with you only makes the insurance companies happy with loss prevention and your initiative therein.” This was way too easy. Maybe I’m just growing apprehensive in my old age.
“Uh-huh...Thanks, Adeline. I think that’s all.” I finished, eyebrow raised.
“Have a good evening, Jimmy-boy!” I hang up after her sugary sendoff.
I pull up to the same dated, suburban home I reported to the first time I ever drove for Cerber. Nothing has changed aside from the experiences I’ve gained. I would say that I am an entirely different person now than I was that first night.
Ray comes out, sporting the same gray hoodie and jeans. It’s definitely a relief seeing him this time around. There is one difference to his attire: he’s wearing the most ATROCIOUS dolly mask. A normal, grown man wearing such a thing would be creepy, imagine a 7-foot spookfest on stilts wearing a dolly mask. He looks like something straight out of Silent Hill. The mask has the typical blue eyeshadow, red lips, obnoxious blush and a toothy grin, far too large in proportion to reality.
Ray climbs into the car, grunting slightly since he’s trying to cram himself in the front seat, not having the proper leg room.
“Are you going to get ass-hurt if I ask you why you’re wearing such a horrible mask?” I ask him, wondering what could possibly be worse than that wretched mask.
“Want me to show you?” I could hear his muffled snark. I’m brave, I’m tough, I can handle this.
“Yeah, show me your mug. I bet it’s incomparable to that garbage on your face.” I say confidently.
“Alright. If you say so.”
I was right, by the way. The mask was still way worse. Under the mask was nothing. LIterally nothing. No identifiable features, just a smooth, pale canvas. It’s like the artist forgot to sculpt a face.
“Yeah dude, lose the mask,” I tell him, as he sat frozen, not expecting that response, “that mask only inflates fear factor. You’re fine.” I finish.
He remains still, I think he’s searching for a bluff. I wasn’t bluffing. He genuinely didn’t freak me out.
“Nah,” he faces forward, putting the mask back on, “I dislike your reaction. I would rather you be uncomfortable. Thank you, though. I appreciate the honesty.” He’s odd, but I picked the right guy to spend my night with. This should be fun.
“So, where are we camping out?” He asks, buckling up, knees close to his chin.
“I was thinking of parking at SFO and seeing if anyone needs a lift from the airport.” I reply.
“Typically, that would be a good decision. However, you’re not transporting humans. The few occasions which entities decide to leave their haunt, they usually don’t like to travel far. Not anywhere that would need an airplane, at least. I suggest Ocean Beach. There’s a lot of ghosts looming in that area.” I wish I would’ve thought of this sooner. I never even entertained the idea of habitual nature in the paranormal.
“Thanks for the tip. I’ll head over there. You should move the seat back a touch, by the way. We’re about an hour out.” I turn the keys in the ignition and we hit 280 north.
I park in front of The Cliff House, a restaurant that overlooks the shores of ocean beach and ready the signal. Ray reclines to the best of his abilities as we listen to some mellow electronic music. I pull out a deck of cards and we play Gin Rummy for about thirty minutes before we get a request. The request came from someone named Yuki.
“Alright, looks like we’re on, buddy.” I say to Ray, putting my car in reverse. He nodded.
I pull up to a warehouse that is glowing purple with smoke dripping out of the sides and loud music, causing this already unstable structure to shake. This is definitely a rave. Out stumbles this tiny, harajuku looking lady with long black hair, bright blue lipstick, very little white clothing and shiny, bedazzled, platform boots. She dances her way to my car, still feeling the effects of whatever party she walked out of.
I roll down my window, “Hi, are you Yuki?” I ask.
“Yep! Are you Jimmy?” She asks, feeling my face with her icy hands.
“Y-y-yes, Y-y-your hands…” her cold fingers drew the breath right out of my lungs.
“Oh-em-gee, your face is SO WARM. It feels SO GOOD!” Ok, I’m definitely being molested. Ray is laughing with a hand covering a mouth he doesn’t actually have. This is still better than whispering torment.
“Yuki, why don’t you get in the car.” Ray finally says through snickers.
“Ray?! Is that you! It’s been forever!” Yuki bolts into the car and hugs Ray from the backseat. You don’t need to see a face to understand that he’s wildly uncomfortable. I giggle at witnessing the pure karma.
“Yuki, are you alright? You’re...friendlier than normal. Did someone mess with your drink?” Ray asks with concern.
“No, silly. The humans REALLY know how to have a good time. They gave me this thing called molly and let me tell you, I’ve never loved so hard before!” Yuki was running her hands over my back seat and giggling. Now that she’s in closer view, she’s absolutely stunning. Pale skin, blue makeup with rhinestones placed in flower configurations over her face and body, she was super cute.
I look at Ray, who I’m sure still couldn’t relax and mouthed the words “you hit that?” Just to make him that much more uncomfortable. He shakes his dolly head from side to side, folding his arms over his chest. I giggle again and set off to our destination, which was to an apartment complex in Daly City.
About two minutes into the drive, Yuki quietly sneaks up behind me and begins touching my ears. I let out a yelp in cold shock.
“Jimmy, do you think I’m pretty?” Oh Jesus Christ, not this.
“Of course, Yuki!” I reply through chattering teeth.
“I don’t believe you.” Suddenly my chest was getting tight and I could see my breath in the car. I keep my car cold, but not THAT cold. Her hands had gone from my ears to my chest without me really noticing. My body was getting heavy from the radiating cold coming from her palms. My blood was literally turning to ice and I was having trouble breathing.
Ray senses my distress and said “Yuki...please don’t cause us to have an accident. Humans bleed. You don’t want to get blood all over your cute outfit, do you?” Ray was strangely calm. Then again, it sounded like his main concern was a bloody mess instead of me dying from hypothermia.
“You know what I am, Jimmy?” She says, ignoring Ray. I couldn’t answer her, air was too hard to come by to waste it on words and I had to focus on not crashing. I was on Skyline Highway, making it difficult for me to pull over. Like a dunce, I just kept driving. Is it redundant to say I was trying to keep my cool?
She didn’t wait long to answer for me, “I’m an ice witch. I’ve never been fond of human men before. Not unless I’m starving,” she threatened. Yuki stayed perfectly still, allowing the frigid bonds to grip me tighter into place. It felt like the snowy hold of a boa constrictor, “I wonder, would Cerber actually miss one driver? I mean, you’re mostly just a warm, walking liability at this point-“ She is cut off and I hear the gentle thud of her body hit the back of her seat.
“Yuki, please.” Ray said with mild frustration. I was able to breathe and warm up almost instantly. I stayed calm because Ray was calm. I’ve learned that if the entity is calm, there’s no real reason to panic. I was annoyed and embarrassed, but calm.
“I’m so sorry!” Yuki belted out, covering her mouth in shock of her own actions. She puts the polar in bi-polar. “I hit one of those lows. Rolling can be a real trip sometimes.” It sounded like she was close to crying.
“It’s ok, Yuki. You should drink some water. Jim usually has some in the back.” I didn’t appreciate Ray accepting her apology for me, but I likely would’ve done the same anyway. Plus, I didn’t want to aggravate the situation more.
“Yeah, there’s a red cooler in the back with bottles of water. I’m sorry, but I don’t have any spare men for you to snack on.” I say, trying to lighten the mood. It worked. They both let out a short laugh and we finished the drive in silence.
“Thank you, Jim,” Yuki says quietly as she starts climbing out of my car, “I’m sorry again for my antics. I get weird on recreational drugs.” She seemed decently sober now.
“Jim has a habit of talking his way into some awkward situations, I think he can forgive this misdeed, Yuki.” Ray says, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“Oh yeah, absolutely.” I let out a nervous chuckle.
Yuki smiles and says, “Bye, fellas. Thank you for getting me home safely. I do appreciate it!”
“No problem! Thank you for riding Cerber and enjoy your evening!” Even though she nearly froze me over, she’s still super hot. Ironic. Yuki saunters up to her apartment and turns the porch light off.
I look at Ray and say “Thanks for that, man. I owe you. Your next ride is on me.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ray teases.
My phone chimes with a Cerber notification displaying the ride amount and tip. Yuki paid $6,211.86 and tipped $1,000 even. She gave me five bat wings and a review that read “If this thing would let me rate Jim 10/10, I would give him 11. He’s seriously the best!”
“What the f-, why did she have to pay more than Goat?!” I exclaimed, heart thumping at my 7k haul.
“The Goatman indiscriminately kills people after freaking them out. Yuki exclusively executes men. She really hates them. She must like you a lot to let you live.” Ray has a dark sense of humor. I like that.
“Had nothing to do with your invisible, spaghetti monster abilities, huh?” I jest back. Ray shrugs and laughs.
I head over to Burlingame, parking my car at the waterfront on Bayshore. Ray and I continued playing Rummy as the planes landed across the water at the airport. By the way, Ray is shit at cards. It’s hardly fair how many times I whooped his ass.
After about an hour of spanking the slendy at Rummy, another request came in from Hillsborough by an entity named Bo.
“Finally.” Ray said, slamming his cards down on the center console, “I had a hand like a foot for that round. I’m certain you bewitched this deck.” Psh, sore loser.
We pull up to a large estate that was shrouded in darkness. No lights were on in the house and I couldn’t see my own hands in front of my face. The back door opened, causing the cargo light to slice through the blinding blackout. I almost threw up when I saw it. Goat was back.
“OH HELL NO! GET OUT OF MY CAR! YOU! JUST FUCKING NO! OUT! NOW! RAY?!” I’m in full panic mode, flailing my arms and throwing an absolute tantrum, about as composed as a chihuahua with fleas.
“What ails you?!” Bo says from the backseat.
“Jim, cool it-“ Ray says in attempt to calm me down in a stern tone, but I interrupt him.
“That’s the asshole that messed with me the other night!” I turn to look at Bo and say “What?! You thought using a different name meant I would fall for this crap again?! Nope! He also had HUGE breasts pushing up against his button-up shirt. But the goat head?
“You’re...not Goat?” I ask, blushing at this things impressive boobs like a teenager getting a boner at an inappropriate time.
“What on earth are you talking on about?” Bo asks in confusion. He didn’t seem offended, just entirely clueless as to why I had a full-on spaz attack.
“He thinks you’re the Goatman.” Ray says, exasperated. NOW Bo is offended.
“Is that supposed to be funny?! Are you really so daft as to confuse me with that Machiavellian clown?!” Oooh he’s pissed, super pissed, “I’m Baphomet, you half-witted ass!”
“You’re…” I remember my sister being obsessed with baphomet, she literally died looking for him, “THE Baphomet?!” I grip the back of my seat with wide eyes, that of a fan boy meeting Stan Lee at a comicon.
“What- Ray, what’s going on? Do I need to request another driver? I haven’t the patience for foolhardy humans.” Bo says, quickly losing his patience.
“Ah, um, no. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you sir. I’m just, I know of you and you were a big deal to someone very close to me.” I reply, trying to save the situation.
“I see. Well, I am not the Goatman. I don’t play with my food.” We all paused for a second before cracking up in unison.
“It’s truly a pleasure to meet you, Baphomet. Do you prefer Bo? Would you like some water? Is there anything I can do to accommodate you properly?” I have no idea who I just turned into, but I was very excited to be in his presence.
“You can take me to the airport.” Bo says, pointing to my phone on the dash.
“Right, of course. On the double.” I look at Ray and say “you said-“ and quickly stop my sentence because I’m still regaining the notion of couth.
Ray shrugs and says “I said typically. Baphomet isn’t typical.” I know he thinks that was a smooth reply, but it was a cop out. I need to remember to give him shit about that later.
To my disappointment, Baphomet spent a lot of time on his phone talking to some scientist in New Mexico. I don’t know if this person was actually a scientist, but after I heard the word ‘quantum’ being thrown around, I quickly realized this conversation was way too adult and sciencey for me to tune into.
I pull up to a private airport drop-off where a learjet was being prepped, rush out of my car and open the door for Baphomet. Yes, I realize this may have been overkill, but I really wanted him to request me in the future.
“Thank you so much for choosing Cerber and gracing me with your presence, sir.” Ok yeah, overdone.
“The pleasure is mine, James. Thank you for safe transport.” Baphomet hands me a gold coin and says “Keep this on your person as often as you can. You’ll know when to use it and how, when the time comes.”
“Cryptic,” I begin, “Thank you, Baphomet. It truly is a pleasure to meet you.”
“You said that already, James.”
“Right, sorry. Have a safe trip!”
I stand outside my car until Baphomet makes safe entry into the plane. Once the plane began moving, I got back into my car.
“That was so cool.” I say staring out the front window.
“You’re a fool, James Atwell.” Ray laughs.
My phone dings again with the balance, tip and review. Strangely, Baphomet’s balance was $0, but he tipped me $3,000 and wrote a review saying “Choose no one else. Jim insures comedy and comfort, I was not disappointed.”
“I’m confused. What is with the scale on Baphomet?” I ask Ray.
“Baphomet isn’t dangerous. In fact, quite the opposite. Baphomet is a deity of knowledge. He’s a rare entity that isn’t actually dangerous to humans, unless you’re staunch Christian. The ones that hate gay people and humans with disabilities, those are the ones that fear Baphomet because he challenges spiritualism with fact. I’m guessing he tipped you out of pity. You’re pretty pathetic.” Ray finishes. He wasn’t wrong.
“Ok, ok, let’s all take turns digging at the human.” I reply sarcastically.
“You’ve got courage, Jim. Anyone who lives through this usually quits within their first client. Stupidity is probably your greatest defense, if I’m being truthful.”
“OK RAY!” I put the car in reverse, “So, wanna go to San Bruno and grab some coffee from Starbucks? They have a location that’s open 24 hours.”
“See? Rolls right off of you! That’s the spirit!” Ray nods, “Yeah, I could go for a frappucino.”
“You’re buying, though. You lost too many hands at Rummy for me to let it slide.” I say, taking 101 north towards San Francisco.
“Damnit.” Ray finishes in defeat. I think I’ll take the next night solo. Ray is right. I’m brave, I can do this on my own. I am incredibly grateful for his company, though. Ray is alright.

Flying into O'Hare the night before the JAL F flight so that we A) don't need to start off our trip with getting up at 4 am for an early flight and B) will have time to try out the flagship dining in ORD that we get access to with our F tickets. Mainly A. The NRT-ITM flight is in Y because JAL doesn't seem to release J award space on that specific route. I also couldn't get it to ticket using the website so I put DEN-ORD-NRT and called into the NZ office to have them tack on the flight to Osaka for no extra charge.
The Hyatt near ORD is just a hotel to spend the night at. All three have free airport shuttles, but leaning towards the Hyatt since it would put P2 a step closer to getting a free cert from the Hyatt brand challenge.
Chose the Hilton Osaka over the 8,000 point-per-night Hyatt because of the more central location, which should make going out for food and eventually catching the train to Kyoto the next day easier. Will possibly switch this to the Conrad if base rooms open up.
Not much to say about the Ritz, other than it's exhausted almost all of my remaining Marriott points. I wish I had booked it during the period when nights were capped at 60k each, but oh well. Cash price for those five nights is north of $6k, which is obscene. Only will have Marriott Gold status, so no free breakfast, but I think we'll survive. Planning on taking advantage of some of the activities the hotel offers in addition to using their concierge to book us some Michelin-starred restaurants during our stay.
This next bit is the award travel bit that was the biggest stroke of luck. We wanted to go to Turkey after Japan, since my wife's family is there and we won't have visited earlier in 2020. Our flying into IST is a big pain for her parents given where they live, so flying into Ankara (ESB) is always preferred. Flying from Kyoto to Ankara is definitely possible with Star Alliance partners, but the schedules, flight times, and products aren't ideal. Luckily, Qatar recently announced that starting next year they'd be flying KIX-DOH nonstop, and Qatar happens to be the only Oneworld carrier that flies into ESB. To further add to the luck, the timing of the two flights is perfect: KIX-DOH leaves Osaka just before midnight and gets into DOH around 4 am, while DOH-ESB leaves a couple hours later. Only seventeen hours to get from one secondary city to another with a single stop was just too ideal, and the fact I could book it with my most plentiful points currency was just icing on the cake.
However, I wasn't able to actually book it in J on AA's site. Furthermore, I couldn't actually see any KIX-DOH J space on AA, BA, or QF. Luckily my two biggest helps when it comes to AA bookings came to the rescue: the AAdvantage New Zealand call center and nickohrn. nickohrn suggested I look and see what BA and QF showed, which led me to play around with the searches on those two engines more thoroughly. Lo and behold, I found that while KIX-DOH J space was blocked off everywhere, four seats popped up if I searched for the whole KIX-DOH-ESB route. The awesome NZ AAgent I spoke to knew exactly what I was getting at and when I told her there was married segment logic blocking out KIX-DOH she searched for the whole route and I was able to get it held.
We'll be meeting her parents in Ankara, and then will drive down with them to Antalya where I'm going to book two rooms for four nights at one of a few AI resorts.
I'll be flying home from Antalya after the resort stay, since my work schedule won't permit me to stay longer, while P2 will be staying and visiting family for an extra week before flying back to the US. We decided to book her TATL J seat on TK before UA opened their schedule because the ESB-IST-ORD route had very limited J availability and since adding an AA domestic F flight ORD-DEN is actually very convenient. Haven't booked that last bit because AA's schedule hasn't opened. I will either transfer UR to BA or wait for an Avios transfer bonus sometime in the next half year since betting on one of those seems like a pretty sure thing.
For my flight, I was considering flying AYT-IST-ATL so I could try the new TK 787 J, but that would have necessitated a WN or DL flight ATL-DEN that would get me home after midnight when I am planning on working the next day. There is wide open BA J and F space IST-LHR-DEN, and the westbound fuel surcharges aren't as bad as long as you're not originating at LHR. Figured as long as I was going that route I might as well burn the extra AA miles and fly F over J.
For anyone who made it through that whole thing: hope you have a more exciting rest of your Sunday!
Edit: Some AA-metal space out of LHR opened up, and I decided to book that instead of BA F. Found out the LHR-DEN BA flight leaves out of T3, so I wouldn't be getting the full ground experience (for whatever that's worth anyway). Didn't feel like paying an extra $170 and 27,500 miles for a not-too-dissimilar seat, pajamas, and better food made sense in the end. And I guess I can always call AA and change back to BA F if space is still around and I change my mind.
Edit edit: Turns out we won't be driving from Ankara to Antalya, so we'll need to take a cheap Anadolujet (TK's regional, all-economy subsidiary) flight. Tickets are relatively expensive if we were to book now, but knowing domestic airfare pricing in Turkey it will drop down to $20-$40 once we get three or four months out. Flying into ESB rather than SAW or IST is still good, since we'd want to be in ESB if our resort plans change and since the flight scheduling will get us to Antalya sooner than a connection in one of the Istanbul airports would have. Qatar actually does fly to AYT directly, but (like to many AYT flights) it's a seasonal flight that doesn't operate when we're traveling.

Even a bye week and trade deadline move wasn’t enough to cure the Eagles Super Bowl hangover. The Eagles came out flat against their division rival in a must win game in a performance that was just unacceptable. The Eagles luck doesn’t look like it will improve this week as they travel to New Orleans to take on the red hot Saints who just blew out the 5-4 Bengals. The Eagles lost number one CB Ronald Darby last week, which could be huge as they take on one of, if not the best QB/WR combo in the league in Drew Brees and Michael Thomas. Sidney Jones practiced fully this week and looks to make his return to help try to contain Thomas. That reinforcement along with the return of Timmy Jernigan from the NFI list should help bolster the defense, but the job is still a tough one. The Saints’ offense is ranked top 10 in nearly every category and hold the number one scoring offense averaging 36.7 points per game, that's over 2 TDs what the Eagles are averaging this season. The Eagles defense will need to be better this week especially against the run where they have struggled of late, they will have their hands full though with the 1-2 punch of Kamara and Ingram. While the Saints offense is running on all cylinders, the wheels fell of a defense that was dominant a year ago. The Saints give up 296.1 yards through the air this seasons which is good for 2nd worse just ahead of the Bengals. Wentz should be able to move the ball against the Saints secondary, especially with Tate having another week to learn the offense getting in sync with the team. If the Eagles defense can slow down the Saints a little, the Eagles may have a chance in a shootout.

The Saints took an early 7-0 in the 1st quarter as Drew Brees connected with Ben Watson in endzone for a 6 yard TD on a drive that started after Sam Bradford threw an INT in the redzone. The Eagles answered on the following possession with a 41 yard TD pass from Bradford to Huff. The Eagles would add 3 more TDs and 4 FGs to the Saints 10 points to seal the victory in a game Sam Bradford was able to overcome not one, but two redzone INTs to throw for 333 yards and 2 TDs. Both Demarco Murray and Ryan Mathews added touchdowns on the ground as the Eagles won in a route 39-17.

The Eagles (3-5) lost their fourth straight, which is sure to keep the heat on Vick and embattled coach Andy Reid. Vick threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson in the third quarter, but that was about the only highlight for the visiting team. Vick took a beating and was sacked 7 times while also throwing an INT that was returned 99 yards for a TD to start off the scoring for the Saints who won 28-13 with Drew Brees extending his record TD streak to 51 games.

Matchups to Watch
Eagles Offensive Line vs. Saints Defensive Front
Let's face facts here: the Eagles backs are against the wall and the defense is too banged up to have a lot of faith in at the moment. Given the Saints have one of the best offenses in football with Drew Brees at the helm, the Eagles offense is going to have to score some points and return to 2017 form to have their best chance to win. It always starts up front with the Eagles good offensive line that is banged up against the relatively underrated Saints defensive front. Fortunately for the Eagles, the Saints will be without rookie Marcus Davenport in this game as he is nursing an injury. He's been pretty good in his rookie season and helps Cameron Jordan. Oh, that's right, the Saints have an elite edge rusher in Cameron Jordan. Jordan is versatile and will line up all over the formation; the Saints defensive staff has to be drooling with the chance to line him up across from Big V if Lane is unable to go. Jordan is extremely disruptive and will give all 5 members of the Eagles offensive line a run for the money. Be careful not to overlook IDL Sheldon Rankins. The 2016 1st round pick of the Saints is healthy and kicking ass along the interior for the Saints. He's a very formidable interior rusher and will give the IOL of the Eagles a significant challenge. The Saints are very good against the run which is irrelevant since the Eagles struggle to run with their practice squad RBs. However, if the Eagles can control the Saints pass rush opportunities should be open for them through the air as the Saints have a very suspect pass defense.
Eagles Passing Game vs. Saints Pass Defense
The "Run the Ball, Doug" crowd will be triggered at this matchup listing but the fact is the Eagles best chance to keep up with the Saints and possibly win is to execute their passing offense at the level we expect but haven't consistently seen this season. The Saints do have two very good young players in their secondary in Marcus Williams and Marcus Lattimore. Neither are perfect and will occasionally blow plays down the sidelines against the Vikings shattering their hopes and dreams but they are very formidable. Lattimore is an excellent athlete and will line up in press with regularity. It'll be up to the Eagles receivers to win their 1v1 matchups when they present themselves. Eagles hero Patrick Robinson is on IR for the Saints leaving a big hole for PJ Williams to struggle to fill; Nelson Agholor and Saints killer Golden Tate should be able to make plays against Williams. The Saints traded for Eli Apple at the deadline and he's an upgrade over Ken Crawley which is still insignificant since Crawley ain't good. Zach Ertz has proven he can get open versus anyone and the Eagles still have Dallas Goedert to throw in as well. Point being: the Eagles have the weapons to shred the Saints through the air. They also have the QB to pick them apart as well. Lastly, they still have the coaching to maximize the talent they have on the field to pick the Saints apart. The Eagles cannot afford to have yet another game where they putz around on offense or else they will get buried with their ass facing the sky. The opportunity is ripe for the Eagles despite some of the players the Saints have on defense.
Eagles Defensive Line vs Saints Offensive Line
Assuming perfect health for both teams this matchup would be one of the marquee matchups you'll see in the NFL along the trenches. Under Sean Payton, the Saints have always had a great offensive line and this year they've played best in the NFL. All 5 members of the OL are very good in pass protection which allows Drew Brees to do whatever he wants when he is on the field. Second year pro Ryan Ramczyk is having an All-Pro caliber season at RT and they'll need him to maintain that level of play in this contest without likely All-Pro LT Terron Armstead. Armstead will be out the next couple of games for the Saints as he nurses yet another injury. He has been the best tackle in football regardless of side and one of the best offensive linemen in general in 2018 so his loss should be felt. Max Unger captains the Center position for the Saints; he's a lot like Jason Kelce in that he is good in space and a good pass blocker. Andrus Peat is rated as the worst OG in the NFL per PFF which shows you how many grains of salt you should put in PFFs rankings. Larry Warford mans the other OG position for the Saints. Jermon Bushrod will play LT in Armstead's place. Bushrod is a solid depth tackle but is a big step down from Armstead so the opportunity will be present for the Eagles DL in this contest. The Eagles DL as a unit is still one of the best in the NFL this year but isn't as deep as it was due to injury which limits how much of a force they can be without the rotation. Additionally, the Eagles have been getting next to nothing out of their second DT position next to Fletcher Cox. Ngata is solid as a role player but doesn't have the juice as a rusher in the role the Eagles need from him. The Eagles have yet to activate Timmy Jernigan from NFI; it would be a big boost for the DL if Jernigan is able to play.
Eagles Secondary vs Saints Passing Offense
What's there to say about this matchup? The Saints have always had one of the best offenses in the NFL with Drew Brees and Sean Payton around and they've somehow managed to be even better this season. Michael Thomas is an elite WR that's almost impossible for even the best DBs to cover. Alvin Kamara is an elite play-making weapon who is great as a runner and receiver with some of the best contact balance you'll ever see in a player. Mark Ingram is a very good running back and provides the Saints with a very formidable 1-2 punch out of the backfield. Throw in Drew Brees and the Saints are able to do whatever they want on offense - which isn't an exaggeration. The Eagles enter this contest depleted with injury with the secondary bearing the brunt of that pain. Second year CB Sidney Jones is expected to make his return for the Eagles this week and that is welcome news. Jones has been manning the slot for the Eagles this year but with Darby now on IR and Mills out for this game, will the Eagles give Jones a shot to play outside CB? Rasul Douglas was pretty ineffective in his first start this season against Dallas and will get the start again. Rookie Avonte Maddox seems to have played every position in the secondary for the Eagles this year and is a very good young player. However he is still a rookie; the Eagles are asking a lot from him out of necessity. Can he continue to be an effective player? Malcolm Jenkins is nursing a hand injury now too. And who the hell will be the 3rd CB for the Eagles? Corey Graham is so freaking useless but the Eagles are so depleted they need to play him and hope he doesn't suck - which he will because he does in fact suck. Eagles fans that want Schwartz fired now are dumb despite some relevant criticisms at times. What is he supposed to do with the circus he has available on the back end? Last week’s game plan against Dallas was very creative and effective but the wheels feel off once Darby exited the game. That's not too surprising when you have to lean on rookie UDFA Chandon Sullivan. Jim Schwartz is going to have to call the game of his life on Sunday and hope that for once his players find a way not to fail in executing concepts that have set them up for success. It's a tall order against this Saints offense. Somehow, the Eagles defense has not let up more than 30 points this season; if they can miraculously do that this Sunday the Eagles will have a shot.
